Tractor Donations: Do A Meaningful Act Of Charity Using Your Old Farm Tool

If youre looking for the best way to dispose of an old tractor that you no longer need and is just occupying space on your property, youve come to the right place. We at Goodwill Car Donations will gladly haul off that rusting vehicle quickly and at no cost to you.

At the same time, your tractor donation will allow you to render a meaningful act of charity to the disadvantaged people in your community. These are the men and women in your place who are burdened with disabilities, lack of education, and other barriers to decent employment and livelihood.

We will sell your tractor through an auction and turn over the proceeds to the Goodwill organizations in your area. These nonprofits cater to disadvantaged individuals and will use the funding to supplement their budget for the services they provide to their beneficiaries. These services include job training, employment opportunities, and livelihood assistance among many others.

These programs and services seek to provide the less fortunate residents of your community with the right tools that will enable them to harness their full potential, gain financial stability, and attain a better quality of life.

This is such a perfect opportunity to get your used and unwanted tractor off your hands while you support a noble cause.

What Can I Donate To Goodwill

Again, each store is different when it comes to accepted donations. Each Goodwill organization has its own criteria for items that are welcomed as donations and those that should be repurposed by the donor in another manner, says Kyle Stewart, senior director of donated goods retail at Goodwill Industries International. Here is a short list of Goodwill donation tips to keep close during your next big cleanout:

Recycling A Lawn Mower

What NOT to Donate
  • 1Drain all fluids from the mower 24 hours before recycling it. Drain all the oil out of the lawn mower by removing the oil drain plug underneath the engine block and letting the oil pour out into a sealable plastic or metal container. siphon out any leftover gasoline from the tank into a sealable plastic or metal container as well.XResearch source
  • Never pour oil or gasoline down a drain or into storm waste systems. Seal up the containers after you drain out all the liquids so you can properly dispose of them.
  • You can also use this method to dispose of weed wackers, edgers, and hedge trimmers.
  • 2Dispose of the fluids as household hazardous waste. Locate a household hazardous waste disposal facility by searching online or contact your local waste collection service to see if they offer a pick-up service. Drop off the sealed oil and fuel at the facility or leave it for collection as instructed by the waste haulers.XResearch source
  • Most dumps have a hazardous waste collection facility. You can call your local dump to double-check.
  • If there are any non-metal pieces you canât remove, call a scrap metal recycling facility and ask if they can accept it as-is.
  • Tip: Some of the non-metal pieces, such as rubber tires or plastic grass collection bins, can be recycled as well. Ask for instructions at a recycling facility about which bins to toss them in.

  • You cannot dispose of an electric lawn mower as scrap metal.

    Exercise Equipment And Sporting Goods

Donating exercise and sporting equipment is a great way to share health and wellness with others who cannot afford or choose to forego gym memberships.

    • Exercise balls, bands, and weights: Help someone else meet their strength and fitness goals, especially if you have access to a gyms equipment instead.
    • Bicycles, skateboards, and scooters: As long as these items are in working condition, others can enjoy them for years.
    • Exercise machines and other equipment: Theres a good chance that a machine youre no longer using can be tuned up and enjoyed by someone else or even provide transportation to school or work.
    • Sports balls and other equipment: Not only can gently used balls and other equipment be used by people in need, but its also a great opportunity for school programs to update their inventory, too.
    • Jerseys and gear: Outdoor activities and sports gear can be fun for people of all ages.

    Small Electronics And Communication Devices

Many people are guilty of holding onto electronics longer than necessary. They think theyll plug them back in and fire them up sometime soon, when in reality, these electronics just sit unused. Dont throw them away, even if it seems tempting. Many electronics, though outdated, can still serve a purpose for those on a budget or in need.

    • Office computers: If you recently upgraded to a new laptop or otherwise have no use for a desktop monitor, send it over to Goodwill.
    • Personal computers: Likewise, if you dont have anyone in your family eager to take over your old laptop, donate it to Goodwill. That being said, be sure that you do not hand over any personal documents or information with the computer.
    • Consumer electronics: Goodwill accepts a wide variety of other electronics, such as camcorders, remote controls, tape players, and more.
    • Office equipment: Have other office equipment, such as printers, fax machines, or small copiers? Goodwill takes those, too.

Games Toys Books And Other Entertainment Items

Are you cleaning out an elderly parents house and find an excess of board games and other entertainment items? Goodwill is always looking for these items.

    • Board games: As long as the board game isnt missing too many pieces or elements, this is a great thing to give Goodwill.
    • Electronic games, consoles, and games: Did someone in your household upgrade their gaming system? Goodwill would love any older items.
    • Books: Books dont require batteries, updates, or any additional installation. As long as theyre in decent shape, donate them to Goodwill.
    • Toys for all ages: Some children grow tired of toys quickly. Donating toys to Goodwill provides opportunities for families to buy new toys at better prices.
    • Records, CDs, music players, and more: Recently inherit a house full of stuff? Dont feel like going through old records and CDs? Give them to Goodwill.

Why Is Throwing Away Your Lawn Mower Bad For The Environment

Two reasons. Firstly, anyone abandoning his or her mower without going through the proper disposal process probably either doesnt care or doesnt know that they should empty out all the fluids.

Petrol lawn mowers will have gas sitting in one compartment and engine oil in another. If these fluids are not removed, you know that at some point they will find there way into the ground or the nearest body of water. Improper lawn mower disposal is not just bad for the environment either the liquids represent a health hazard to humans. If that werent enough, its also a fire hazard.

Secondly, the metal and plastic parts of the lawn mower wont do the environment any good sitting in the ground. Every bit of scrap metal recycled reduces our need for new metal just a tiny bit.

    Items We Cannot Accept

It’s hard to say “no thank you” to a donation when those donations help to fund Goodwill programs. However, we do need to refuse some items for being non-recyclable or containing hazardous materials. Other times, the item must be refused because it costs more to transport, repair or refurbish than it can be sold for in our stores. Our donation attendants are trained to know what we can and cannot accept and will help guide you to other possibilities for donations we cannot use.

Beginning November 1, 2021, Goodwill will no longer accept donations of furniture or large exercise equipment. Those items will no longer be available for purchase, effective December 1, 2021.

We CANNOT accept the following items:

    • Desks or other office furniture
    • Tables of any kind
    • Dressers, bookcases, entertainment centers, etc.
  • Large exercise equipment
  • CRT Computer Monitors
  • Household chemical products such as pesticides, paint, paint thinner, drain cleaner, oven cleaner, aerosols, and other environmentally unfriendly waste products.

What Not To Donate To Goodwill

Before we dive in, its important to note that Goodwill is not just one organization, but rather a network of over 160 independent Goodwill organizations across the United States and Canada.

While all of us share the same name and the Goodwill mission of helping people in our community find jobs, we are autonomously operated by our own boards and CEOs in the communities we serve, says Summer Dunham of the Goodwill Industries of North Georgia.

Because of this, local Goodwill donation guidelines vary from location to location. However, weve gathered a list of items that many Goodwill locations cannot accept to help you narrow down your donate pile. If youre on the fence and not sure whether to donate or throw away an item, your local Goodwill will thank you.

    Extremely Large Or Bulky Items

Donating excessively bulky items, including swingsets, refrigerators, stoves, pianos and pool tables to Goodwill can be tricky. In some areas, you might only be able to donate them at certain drop-off locations, if at all.

For the following items, call your local store before taking it over. If your Goodwill doesnt accept them, here are a few ways to get rid of large or bulky items responsibly.

How to Donate or Recycle Bulky Items

    • Swingsets: Local safety guidelines for public playgrounds make it difficult to donate these items to schools and for other community purposes. Once youve disassembled it, its best to either recycle the parts or throw it away entirely.
    • Pool Tables: If youre not able to sell it, you can repurpose your pool table into something cooler.
    • Pianos: If you cannot donate it to Goodwill, you could sell your old piano or organ online or give it away to a local school or church who may be able to use it.
    • Water Heaters: Most locations do not accept these, so be sure to dispose of your water heater properly.
    • Large Appliances: Habitat for Humanity can accept working appliance donations in many locations. But if your oven, fridge or washer is on its last leg, it may be time to dispose of it.
