How Many Sprinkler Heads Will I Need

HOW MUCH DOES A SPRINKLER SYSTEM COST? (PROFESSIONALLY INSTALLED)

Firstly, we establish the number of sprinkler heads required to provide full coverage . Each sprinkler head can cover a room size up to 4.9m x 4.9m without obstructions. Rooms over this size will require more as may L shaped rooms and corridors. Any cupboards with a floor area over 2m2 will require coverage as will any bathrooms with a floor area over 5m2.

Subsurface Drip Irrigation Cost

Subsurface drip irrigation costs $1,000 to $4,000 per acre installed. Subsurface systems distribute water through buried drip lines and work on slopes but not in heavily treed areas. Subsurface irrigation is common for farms and gaining popularity for lawns due to its water and energy conservation benefits.

Subsurface systems are easier to install before laying down a new lawn. New sod installation costs$0.90 to $1.80 per square foot.

Type Of Sprinkler System

There are several common types of sprinkler irrigation system for residential properties:

  • Traditional spray systems
  • Drip irrigation systems
  • Rotor sprinkler systems

Each type of sprinkler system has distinct advantages and disadvantages for different landscapes and uses. The cost of installation also varies significantly.

Traditional spray systems consist of pop-up sprinkler heads or ground-level sprinkler heads. This type of system offers wide coverage for open landscapes. The sprinkler heads deliver water in a quarter, half, or full circle.

While traditional systems offer maximum coverage, they can waste water. This also increases the risk of oversaturation. If the soil cannot absorb the water, you may end up with puddles of water throughout the yard.

As traditional systems may waste water, they may not offer the same savings on your water bill compared to other options.

Drip irrigation systems are the most water-efficient option for delivering water to plant beds. They typically consist of plastic or PVC pipes with small holes that allow water to slowly drip.

Drip systems are an affordable option. They tend to cost about $80 to $100 for a 100-foot system. The same system would likely cost $320 or more for professional installation. Keep in mind that drip irrigation does not offer the coverage needs for watering your lawn. It is best suited for spot watering plants or flowers.

How Much Does It Cost: Watering The Lawn

This post will be filed in the Dad is Learning folder. It was a HUGE wake up call to me about some wasteful behavior I have been engaged in as a homeowner

Over the past few weeks in North Texas we have been blessed with below normal temperatures and a surprising amount of rain for July. The long range forecast shows our temperatures climbing back above 100 degrees and any chance of rain disappearing. Lawns, landscaping, and gardens will all need water to survive, but how much water and how often?Ill start by taking a look at my setup and then take a look at some cost saving options and ideas for watering the lawn.

My Lawn

When we built our house in 2007 we had a Bermuda grass lawn hydro-mulched after a sprinkler system was installed. Our property is 1 acre, which is larger than most, but we only water approximately half of it the front yard and the play area out back. We are watering approximately 22,000 sqft of grass which is about double the amount of the average home owner. Here are some numbers I put together to calculate cost:

First I determined the gallons per minute that is available to my sprinkler system. I used a 5 gallon bucket and a watch. Quickly turn an outside hose bib on all the way and fill the bucket. Take note of the number of seconds this takes. Divide that number by 5 and then multiply by 60. That number is your GPM. My GPM was 7.14. Its honestly a bit sobering to realize just how quickly water can flow out of your hose.

Planning Your Sprinkler System Installation

How to Calculate Lawn Irrigation Water Usage and Costs

Hiring a professional may save money over time while also ensuring that your system operates properly. Even if you choose to work with a professional, you can start planning your system to make the process a little easier. Here are the basic steps for planning a sprinkler system:

  • Create a map of your property
  • Choose the best type of sprinkler head
  • Determine where to place each component

Create a scale map of your yard and the location of your house. Mark the areas based on their watering needs to separate your property into zones. For example, your front yard may get more sunlight, requiring more water. You may also have plant beds or flower beds with specific watering requirements.

Contact your local utility company and have them mark the location of utility lines and pipes in your yard. You will need to dig your trenches around these spots.

Select the sprinkler head based on your watering needs. A pop-up spray head works well for small yards and watering zones. However, a gear-driven head offers more coverage.

The last step before installation is choosing where to place everything. Based on the radius of the spray from the sprinkler heads, decide where to place each sprinkler head. You should also choose a location for the smart controller or manual controller.

Are You A Drip

There are basically two types of irrigation systems for your yard: drip and sprinkler. Drip systems consist of a long stretch of either flexible or rigid tubing that runs to a specific part of your yard. The tubing can be either above ground or buried 2 inches below ground. Water travels through the tube and slowly leaks out into the surrounding soil, which has the benefit of feeding the roots of your greenery directly.

According to the AWWA, drip irrigation systems use just 16% more water than standard households versus 35% for normal sprinkler systems so theyre also more water efficient. Part of the reason is that sprinklers broadcast water over a large area, which means some of that moisture is lost to evaporation drip systems avoid this problem. That being said, drip systems are really best for watering specific areas of your yard, such as flower beds, rather than an entire lawn, which can be better served by the greater range of a sprinkler system.

According to Fixr.com, you can expect to pay an average of $2,150 per acre for a drip irrigation system with the tubing above ground, and about $3,000 per acre for a system with buried tubes, which is helpful if youll be mowing the area where its installed.

Sprinkler System Maintenance Cost

You can expect to spend about $75 to $85 on annual maintenance for your sprinkler system that involves a check-up during peak season. Maintaining your sprinkler system is another way to ensure you are not throwing money away. During the summer months, you should consider having a professional do a mid-season check-up for visible signs of malfunction or potential problems before they turn into big issues.

In between regular professional check-ups, you should check out your sprinkler once in a while. You might notice that one of your sprinkler heads is spraying wildly, not spraying at all, or not popping up or retracting when it should. The fix for this may simply be removing debris around the sprinkler head. Or, individual heads may get damaged by weather, lawn equipment, or even errant footfalls. Regular inspections and maintenance ensure your system is always working effectively.
