Best Time To Aerate And Overseed Lawn

How and When to Aerate Your Lawn

The ideal time for aeration and overseeding your lawn will depend on your region and turf type.

In the Northeast and Midwest, late summer is a good time to aerate and overseed.

For southern regions that experience cooler winters, the rules change a bit. Bermudagrass can be overseeded with perennial ryegrass in fall so that it doesnt lose its lush appearance in winter. Zoysiagrass can be overseeded during its peak growing season — late spring to late summer. Bahiagrass can be overseeded from spring to summer.

Should I Water My Lawn After Aerating

You should not water your lawn the day after aeration because it wont have time to absorb the water. The goal after aeration is to keep your lawn moist. Over watering can cause the soil to dry out. How to Aerate a LawnAerating a lawn can be done in a number of ways.

You can aerate by sprinkling water on the lawn and letting it sit for a few minutes, or you can do it by aerating with a gardenhose. If youre using a hose, make sure its not too big or too small, and that the hose doesnt get in the way of the grass.

A hose aerator is a device that allows you to control the amount of water that comes out of your hose so that you dont over-aerate. Its also a great way to get rid of weeds that are growing in your yard.

Why Do You Need To Aerate Your Lawn

Although there are still many things to be learned about lawn aeration, theres one thing most experts agree on and that is that opening up the turfs surface is beneficial for it. Air and water are essential for the soil ecosystem and the soil microorganisms in it which help naturally break down thatch thus improving the lawn.

Good drainage conditions and adequate topsoil air intake are very important for the proper growth of grassroots as they help them breathe and grow. By aerating the soil, youre permitting air to enter into the soil, which leads to gaseous exchange. Meaning that the grassroots suck in oxygen and expel carbon dioxide.

Having too much carbon dioxide in the soil is not good as it can limit or completely prohibit its water and nutrients intake.

However, by thoroughly aerating an area where browning has occurred, you can restore to roots ability to intake moisture again. And if done right your grass colour will return to its regular green in just around a week.

On the other hand, if the lawn is not aerated during the cold rainy seasons such as autumn and winter completely different problems can occur. For example, your soil might experience surface sealing because of the compacting effect of walking around and using garden maintenance machines that are on the heavier side.

The Crucial Benefits Of Aerating Your Lawn

Having the soil aerated plays a significant role in how your lawn will develop. If you havent yet aerated your lawn, here are some essential reasons that will convince you of the importance of this maintenance task.

One thing you should know about the lush grass that makes your lawn is that its roots dont grow inside the soil, but in the small holes and cracks in it. They are quite delicate, which is why they cannot grow well in compacted soil. When seeding, its a good idea to aerate the soil, to make enough room for the new plants to grow.

As the roots grow, their demands for water and nutrients go. But if the soil begins to squeeze them and the cracks are entirely covered, less and less water will get to them. That is why aeration is a process that must be repeated regularly for optimal effects.

Another critical benefit of aerating your lawn is that it reduces surface runoff. When the soil is too compacted, the rainwater will begin to affect the topsoil, by removing it little by little. With it, the necessary nutrients for feeding the grassroots will disappear.

In brief, you cant have a beautifully manicured lawn if you dont aerate it. With this technique, you ensure that the roots of the plants will grow deeper and stronger. When you fertilize your lawn, you will notice a better absorption. Since rainwater wont wash away the pesticides, thats another significant benefit.

Can You Aerate A Lawn By Hand

This is possible when aerating your lawn by hand, although it might take a while. Typically, you won’t want to aerate your entire lawn by hand, but there are ways to do this without bulky, expensive machinery.

We recommend a pair of aerating sandals, which makes it as easy as walking around your lawn to get the job done. Another idea for manually aerating your lawn is to use a hand-held spike aerator, which either rolls across the ground or has a pitchfork design.

When To Aerate The Lawn

The best time to use aerating lawn tools depends on the type of grass you have. Cool-season grasses, such as fescue, bluegrass, or ryegrass, should be aerated in early spring or early fall. Warm-season turf, including Bermuda grass, zoysia, or St. Augustine, does best with aeration in the late spring. Whatever your type of grass, do not aerate the lawn within one year of planting seed or sod.

How Often Do You Aerate A Lawn

Aeration is an important aspect of lawn management, it is the process of punching holes into your lawn to open up the soil and allow air, water, and soil nutrients to get to the root zone.

Lawn aeration should be done every 1 2 years. Well-drained lawns with sandy soil can be done every 2 years, while lawns that are always trampled or compacted , or with clay soil should be aerated annually.

Spiking or coring is the method used to aerate lawns. Spiking is a less invasive method of aerating your lawn, and it involves the use of solid tines to punch small holes in your lawn. Coring, on the other hand, utilizes hollow tines to puncture your lawn surface to extract a plug of soil from the ground which is dropped on the lawn to disintegrate.

When Is The Best Time To Aerate A Lawn

There are two ideal times for lawn aeration in the UK, one is in spring and the other is in autumn. These are the seasons when the soil is usually naturally moist and is suitable for holes to be poked into it easily.

Most people prefer to aerate their lawn in spring as it coincides with the growing season of the grass. This way the grass has the opportunity to heal properly. However, since the weather in the UK can vary greatly and aeration depends a lot on weather conditions, its important to tread lightly. As if, for example, the soil is too wet, the holes you make will not let any air or water reach the roots as the holes sides will seal up quickly.

So lets move to a schedule which best represents when and how much you should aerate. Also bear in mind that lawn aeration frequency all depends on the lawn you have.

How Often Should Lawn Aeration Be Done?

    The Spruce / Ana Cadena

The basic idea behind lawn aeration is that, like you, your lawn and the soil under it need to breathe. Aerating a lawn is worth the time and effort because it will help a lawn grow better. But how do you accomplish this? And when should you aerate your grass? Read on to learn how to aerate a lawn yourself and why aerating lawns is beneficial to your landscape.

What Happens If You Dont Aerate Compost

Oxygen is needed by Microbes to do their work. You have to turn your compost pile at least once a week. An aerator tool could be used instead of a pitchfork. The rate of decomposition will be slowed if you dont turn your pile.

If you dont have a compost heap, you can make your own compost by adding a small amount of peat moss to a bucket of water and letting it sit for a day or two. This will break down some of the organic matter in the soil and make it easier for your microbes to break it down.

    Aerate When Problems Arise

Lawn aeration confers the best benefits your grass exhibits when any of the following conditions occur on your property.

    • Hard or Dry Soil. When the lawn feels dry and dense, it might be time to run an aerator. It also feels hard underfoot when walking on the surface. Youll know for sure if it is hard to insert a screwdriver or a shovel into the sod.
    • Uneven Growth. If a lawn starts developing bare patches where nothing grows , you know the area is probably compacted. Performing aeration work can give the existing root system access to the air, nutrients, and water it needs.
    • Poor Drainage. Irrigation or rainwater pools in the low areas of a lawn because it doesnt have the chance to permeate into the soil. By using this care technique, drainage improvements start happening right away.
    • Thick Thatch. Try removing a square foot of sod from your lawn. If the thatch layer is more than a half-inch thick, youll want to aerate a dethatch to boost microbial activity in the area.

High traffic areas can cause soil compaction quickly. If youve had heavy equipment, including a riding mower, on the property weekly throughout the year, its often better to aerate twice per year instead of once.

How To Know If Your Lawn Has Too Much Thatch

The best way to determine if your lawn has too much thatch is to walk on it and feel it with your bare feet. Lawns with too much thatch feel spongy and bouncy. Healthy lawns are soft but firm.

Feel the grass with your hand and fingers too. Your finger shouldnt be able to press more than a half-inch into the thatch. If youre still not sure, dig up a small chunk of turf and look at it from the side. If the layer of thatch is thicker than a half-inch, your lawn has too much.

If thatch is accompanied by compacted soil, the best solution is aeration. If thatch is the sole problem, you can dethatch your lawn by raking it manually or renting a power dethatcher from a home improvement store like Home Depot.

    Aerate For Your Grass Type

The best time to aerate a lawn is when the holes can get quickly filled with new grass. That means the seasons of high growth are the best times to target this work.

Your grass type dictates when the best time of year will be to perform aeration work on the lawn. ]

The types that prefer cool weather do better in the fall, while those that like warmer temperatures need aeration in the late spring or early summer.

When the lawn is dormant, you can do significant damage to the grass by aerating. You should leave the soil alone whenever you have periods of extreme heat, drought, or freezing temperatures.

    How Does An Aerator Work

There are several kinds of aerators, but the hands-down best results come from core aerators. A core aerator is a heavy roller covered with hollow spikes that roll across the grass to pull soil plugs from the lawns root zone. The sheer weight of the roller drives the spikes through layers of thatch, dense roots, and compacted soil. It pulls 3/8 inch diameter plugs, up to 3/4 inch deep or more.

The aerator functions best on damp soil. Hard, dry soil may be impervious even to the machine thats supposed to fix it. While you might be able to fix this by lightly irrigating several times per day for a week to soften the soil, a better solution would be to aerate after a significant stretch of wet weather.

Experts recommend that you aerate your lawn at least once every three years. You dont need to do it every year.

However, you should keep an eye on it and aerate when you think it requires it. This will depend on the type of soil your yard has.

If its loose, then you shouldnt need to aerate that much at all. But firm, compact soil will need to be aerated regularly so if your yard is experiencing more traffic, bear this in mind.

Still, whatever your soil type, you shouldnt need to do it more than once a year otherwise you risk damaging your lawn.

If youâre convinced that your lawn is in need of aeration, here are some lawn care tips on how to do it:

    • Before you get started, make sure the soil is moist enough. Thereâs nothing more frustrating than trying to aerate soil that is bone dry. Aerating the day after a rain shower or watering your lawn the day before is advised.
    • Most aeration machines cover only a small percentage of soil surface per pass, so make multiple passes over the most compacted areas. Save resources by leaving unaffected areas alone
    • The excavated soil plugs should be allowed to dry and then broken up to give your lawn a uniform, clean appearance. Break them up by running them over with a lawn mower or pounding them with the back of a rake.
    • An aeration myth is that if you apply a pre-emergent herbicide on your lawn in the spring, aerating your lawn will destroy the herbicide âbarrier.â This is not true research shows that aeration will not affect crabgrass control or weed prevention.
    • After aerating, itâs important to continue basic lawn care practices such as proper fertilizing, mowing and watering.

Aeration is a beneficial practice toward achieving a beautiful lawn, but most people donât realize it or understand the process. If your lawn is a candidate, make it an integral part of your lawn care regime. Your lawn will thank you for letting it breathe again.

    When To Aerate Lawn

Now that you know how often, surely youre wondering, when should lawn be aerated?

After all, if youre only going to aerate your lawn once per year, when you do it is probably pretty important, right?

    Right.

There are many different types of grass.

Warm season grasses typical have their active growth phase during the warm late spring and summer months.

You can aerate a warm season lawn any time from late spring to late summer. But, earlier is usually better so that the lawn can have time to recover from the aerating in order to benefit while it is still actively growing, before it goes dormant.

Cool season grasses usually have their active growth phase during fall and spring, or even winter if you live in a region with mild winters.

For this reason, the best time to aerate a cool season lawn is late spring or fall.

Notice that we say late spring not early spring the reason for this is that you dont want to aerate your lawn at the same time that all of the weeds are springing up the little holes you leave in the lawn will be the perfect home for an opportunistic weed.

If youre pretty confident that youre ready to aerate your lawn now, be sure to have a read of my article on the best lawn aerators and also understand the difference between the types of aerators available so that you choose the best aerator for your lawn.

    How To Dethatch Your Lawn

  • Tackle small lawns with a dethatching rake, and rent a dethatcher for larger lawns
  • Mow your lawn to half its normal height before you begin dethatching.
  • Use a dethatching rake like you would a regular rake. Dig the tines into the thatch and pull it upward, helping to loosen and remove the buildup. While you rake, you should feel and see the thatch separating from the soil.
  • If youre planning to rent a dethatcher, mark any shallow irrigation lines, sprinkler heads, or buried utility lines before starting. This is no time for surprises!
  • Ask the rental agency to adjust the spacing and cutting depth for your grass type. The blades should be set to cut no deeper than ½ inch into the soil. Make sure to get directions for how to use the dethatcher, and follow all of them carefully. A dethatcher is heavy, so ask for help loading and unloading it, and know that youll need a truck to move it.
  • After dethatching, your lawn will look ragged. Use a leaf rake to get rid of the thatch you loosened up.
  • If bare spots were created by dethatching, use a patching product, like Scotts® EZ Seed®, to repair them.
  • Now you can feed the rest of your grass. Once thats wrapped, water your entire lawn to help it recover from all of the poking and prodding.
