How Dry Is Too Dry
Conserving water is a good idea. Golf courses do it. Homeowners should do it, too. But how long can you let your lawn go without?
As with so much else in turf care, it depends. A hardy grass like Bermuda is camel-like in this regard: It can survive long bouts of deprivation. Not so with bentgrass in searing summer heat.
In drought conditions, grass does what it does in colder seasons: It goes dormant as a means of self-protection, redirecting moisture and nutrients to its roots. Its leaves turn color as a result. Dormant grass can be brought back to life just add water.
But dead grass? Well, dead grass is dead.
As with so much else in turf care, the durability of your lawn depends on many factors. But as a general rule, Cutler says, grass starts going dormant after two weeks without water. After a month, its apt to die.
How do you tell if your grass has crossed that line? One faithful indicator is its crown. Thats the thick, light colored part of the plant, just above the soil, right where the roots meet the shoots. Look closely. If theres still green in the crown, theres still life in your grass. If not, you might be out of luck.
Another way to tell is pretty simple, too: tug on the grass, Cutler says. If its roots remain intact, its probably still alive. If it uproots easily, its toast. Youll need to reseed to get it back.
Detecting Wilt And Drought Stress
In order to conserve water and avoid over watering, lawns should be watered just before the development of wilting and drought stress. This may be difficult to determine initially, but a little knowledge and experience will make it easier. Wilting occurs because the plants’ internal water content drops so low that the plant cannot remain turgid , and plant cells begin to collapse. Turfgrasses undergo a series of visible changes when they begin to wilt. Development of a bluish-green coloration and the rolling or folding of leaf blades are two noticeable changes associated with wilting. If footprints remain visible on the lawn for several minutes after walking on it, the turf is not very turgid and wilting is likely imminent. These initial symptoms of wilting will not cause permanent injury to the lawn. However, they do indicate that the lawn should be watered soon in order to avoid drought stress and possible plant death. In addition to observing plant symptoms, examining the soil is also helpful in determining when to irrigate. Use a soil probe or a garden spade to examine the soil to a depth of approximately six inches. If the soil appears dry, it is time to water.

Adjust The Math To Account For Rainfall
The calculations above will tell you how long to run your sprinklers in an average week with no rainfall. But natural rainfall reduces the need for supplemental irrigation. To figure out how long to water your lawn during a week when it rains, subtract the number of inches of rainfall from the weekly watering needed to get a new figure and do the rest of the calculations normally.
So if your normal weekly watering need is 1 inch of water, but you get a ½ inch of rain one week , your watering needs for that week are only ½ inch of water. If your sprinkler output is 1½ inches per week, your sprinklers should run for only hour or 20 minutes that week . On a twice-weekly watering schedule, run your sprinklers 10 minutes each time.
How Can You Tell If Youve Watered Your Lawn Enough
The average lawn needs at least 1 inch of water to 1.5 inches of water per week. This should be continued throughout the year. Even lawns in winter need water as you cant always guarantee that the rainy weather will give them enough.
To be able to figure out if it has enough water, you should get a rain gauge. This will show you just how much water the grass is getting. If using a sprinkler system, make sure that the water from the sprinkler is going into the rain gauge. This will allow you to measure the amount of water that the grass is getting.

Be sure to know what limitations are in place in your community for outdoor irrigation. These may vary by season and are designed to save water, so be sure to follow the restrictions. You may also irrigate less frequently than allowed. If, for example, rainfall of at least ½ ¾” occurs the day before you are scheduled to irrigate, you do not need to irrigate on your designated day.
