Roundup Extended Control Weed And Grass Killer
- Kills Bermuda grass to the root
- Fast-acting results start in just 6 hours
- Great for lawn edges, sidewalks, driveways, fences
- Pre and post-emergent for all weeds
Roundup is one of the few herbicides on the market today that can guarantee to get rid of Bermuda grass completely. While it is not a selective herbicide, it can kill the stubborm common Bermudagrass weed to the root. That means it will kill both rhizomes and stolons running underground and above ground.
I use roundup to control Bermuda grass weed along fences, driveways, patios, and sometimes on the edges of lawns where theres overgrowth of Bermuda grass. It also prevents weeds from growing for up to 4 months.
Caution: Roundup is not a selective herbicide. It will kill all vegetation it comes into contact with. Do not apply on your desired turfgrass.
Killing Bermuda Grass In Flower Beds
Its also not unusual to find Bermuda grass creeping in on backyard flower beds where they arent needed. Whether its through its stolons or underground rhizomes, these grass species are known to spread fast.
If you want to prevent from taking over your landscaping, here are a few steps you should take to get rid of Bermuda grass weeds:
If the above physical removal methods dont stop Bermuda grass weed from growing in your lawn, try chemical weed grass removal.
We recommend the use of a glyphosate solution, which should be sprayed into the Bermuda grass rhizomes and stolons as well as along the garden edges to discourage new Bermuda growth.
When doing so, you might want to adjust the nozzle of your garden sprayer to a fine spray, and hold the nozzle to the targeted plants as close as possible. This is to minimize the chances of the herbicides overspray landing on your wanted garden plants and harming them.
What Herbicide Kills Everything But Bermuda Grass
The best sprays for weeds in Bermuda contain the post-emergent herbicides 2,4-D, Dicamba, and Quinclorac mixed together. Products such as Ortho WeedClear and BioAdvanced Lawn Weed and Crabgrass Killer meet these criteria. They will wipe out weeds but leave Bermuda Grass unharmed.
If Bermuda grass is dormant, it can be sprayed with non-selective weed killers, such as Roundup and Ortho GroundClear. These products will only attack green and growing plants, but will not be absorbed by dormant Bermuda Grass. Preen Crabgrass Control is an excellent weed preventer. It kills weed seeds as they sprout, but wont harm your Bermuda grass.

Think Control Not Eradication
Owners of zoysia, centipede, and fescue lawns often battle Bermuda grass. Unfortunately, it is impossible to kill Bermuda grass organically when it invades another type of lawn without killing both types of grass. Organic herbicides only burn out the foliage, leaving the energy stored in the roots to regenerate new foliage.
Instead of eradicating Bermuda grass, here’s how to control it:
Step 1: Use a systemic lawn herbicide.
A systemic herbicide will absorb through the foliage and then translocates throughout the tissue of the weed to kill the plant. Also, fluazifop is an active ingredient that kills Bermuda grass and is safe for use on fescue and zoysia lawns.
Step 2: Use a product with the ingredient sethoxydim to control Bermuda grass in centipede lawns.
Step 3: Follow the label instructions precisely, including concentration rates, to avoid damaging the good grass.
Step 4: Scalp your Bermuda grass annually. While this treatment is aggressive and shouldnt be used on most other grasses, scalping your Bermuda grass is as helpful to the lawn as irrigation and fertilizer.
Bioadvanced Lawn Weed And Crabgrass Killer
BioAdvanceds competitor to Ortho WeedClear contains the same 3 active ingredients: 2,4-D, Dicamba, and Quinclorac. This provides both grassy and broadleaf weed control without killing Bermuda grass.
- Contains 2,4-D, Dicamba, and Quinclorac at different rates than Ortho WeedClear.
- Safe for Bermuda grass.
- Weed killing spray for actively growing weeds.
Bioadvanced Lawn Weed and Crabgrass Killer does have a different formulation than Ortho WeedClear. It contains lower levels of 2,4-D and higher levels of Quinclorac, so it may perform better against crabgrass and sedge, but be less effective at killing broadleaf annual and perennial weeds.
If youre mostly battling grassy weeds in your lawn, this is an excellent choice.

Can I Selectively Control Bermudagrass
When growing in bluegrass, ryegrass, or fescue lawns, bermudagrass can be selectively controlled by using the herbicide Tenacity . Multiple applications of the herbicide will be required throughout the summer and should not be started until bermudagrass has begun greening up in late spring. Tenacity will cause the bermudagrass to turn a bright white color, an indicator that it is working effectively. Note that Tenacity is NOT labeled for use in non-lawn parts of the landscape. Follow all directions for mixing and application of Tenacity to ensure effectiveness in controlling bermudagrass and to prevent injure to desirable turf.

Bermudagrass Is It Here To Stay
Common bermudagrass has become a well established weed in many lawns and gardens throughout the southwest. It is sometimes grown intentionally as a turfgrass on golf courses, or lawns. It is also used in some areas as forage for livestock. Most of us however, are more familiar with it as an invasive weed. Bermudagrass was introduced to this country from Africa around 1750. It may spread from both stolons and seeds making it very difficult to get rid of. The newer hybrid varieties used in lawns and golf courses do not produce seed.
Mulch can be used effectively to manage bermudagrass. Black polyethylene applied over bermudagrass to prevent sunlight from reaching the plant can effectively control established plants. To accomplish this, mow and irrigate the grass, place the plastic over the plants, and leave it for at least 6 to 8 weeks in summer. Placing plastic over bermudagrass in winter will not control it. Be sure that the plastic remains intact without holes or bermudagrass will grow through the holes and survive. If ornamentals are planted in holes in the plastic, bermudagrass control is reduced.
Bermudagrass is one of the most tenacious weeds that we are faced with. Removal will require a dedicated effort for at least an entire season or longer. Stolons may lay dormant for a time and sprout once they receive irrigation, and soil temperatures have warmed sufficiently. Published January 2005
Is Bermuda Grass A Weed In Lawns And Flower Beds
There are different varieties of Bermuda grass used for hay, lawns and golf courses. Apart from being useful in these ways, this tough grass is also an invasive weed, especially in tall fescue and zoysia lawns. You may find your beautiful flower bed being taken over by a fast-spreading Bermuda grass weed.
If youre looking to get rid of Bermuda grass from your fescue or zoysia turfgrass, using a herbicide may be ill-advised, as the chemicals may harm the wanted grass varieties as well.
As for flowerbed weed invasions, you can go for any of the several chemical and mechanical measures to kill the Bermuda grass from your garden.

When Is The Best Time To Treat The Bermuda Grass
If you are planning to remove the Bermuda grass instantly from your property, then you should begin treating the lawn in early Spring. During this time you can shovel out and dispose of Bermuda patches, or spray the herbicide to eliminate the Fescue grass before it is able to really take off. If it has a chance to start growing substantially, it will be much more challenging to kill in the weeks ahead.

Factors That Determine The Best Way To Kill Bermuda Grass
Bermuda grass can be killed using different methods, but Bermuda grass killer are only useful in some conditions. Here are some factors that will determine the best way to rid your lawn of Bermuda grass weed.
- Level of Bermuda grass weed infestation: the establishment level will always be a significant factor to consider when choosing a way to kill Bermuda grass. Some methods will work best when there is a minimal attack level, while others are best for a full-blown weed establishment in your yard.
- Plants around the Bermuda grass weed: perhaps it should have been the first factor listed as it is so important. Most of the ways used to kill Bermuda grass weeds are dependent on the plants near the weed. If there is a cultivated plant near the weed, utilizing some eradication methods would be unhealthy and unfeasible. Whereas if the weed is growing in an area without a cultivated plant, there are only a few restrictions on selecting a method to kill the grass.
- Plants youre looking to introduce in that area: the plants you want to introduce after killing the Bermuda grass are factors you should consider before employing any Bermuda killing method. You do not want to poison the soil and make it uninhabitable for your next plant.
Is Bermuda Grass A Grass Lovers Dream
Bermuda grass can help you achieve a lush green lawn. Here are the benefits of Bermuda grass:
- It quickly grows from seed or sod into a dense lawn that is capable of out-competing weeds and is highly tolerant of insect and disease pests.
- It grows roots deep underground to access hard-to-reach moisture and simply goes dormant in the driest of weather.
- It thrives in heat and is drought tolerant.
- Bermuda grass is extremely resilient. If a large patch is damaged, it has an incredible ability to regenerate from the deep, creeping roots, and via mower clippings that land on bare soil and then root in. This kind of tough resiliency makes it a grass lovers dream, but the adjacent landscape and adjacent landowners may disagree.

Shade Tolerance Of St Augustine Compared To Bermuda Grass
St. Augustine, being one of the best options for home and commercial lawns, comes out as a clear winner when it comes to shade tolerance. It is one of the most popular grasses of choice for lawns throughout the United States.
It grows best in sandy soil with a PH that ranges from 5.0 to 8.5.
The best cultivar of this type of grass is Seville, Sapphire, Bitter Blue, and Palmetto. It doesnt only do well in the shade it also flourishes under direct sunlight. They can even live on only five to six hours of sunlight a day.
The purpose of cutting St. Augustine in a high setting is for the blades to absorb more sunlight and more of that ultraviolet energy it needs.
On the other hand, Bermuda which has a poor tolerance for shade, simply cannot thrive with no sun.
