Invest In A Good Lawn Mower

Learn How to Cut Your Grass/ Lawn Professionally

Heres the reality: if you buy a crappy lawn mower you wont get good results, at least long term. One of my former colleagues Ryan Jackson, owner of Ryans Lawn Mowing in Austin, TX used to always say, A good mower is worth its weight in gold. Youre s*** out of luck without one..

Or it will take you FAR too long do do a half-decent job. A good lawn mower will cut the grass fast and clean, and wont require a whole lot of maintenance. Here are my personal favorite lawn mowers:

Tip #5 Cut The Lawn When Its Dry

This is a no brainer. When possible cut the lawn when it is dry. Now, this is by no means a rule that can not be broken. Sometimes you will have no choice but to cut the lawn when it is wet. But, not only is a wet lawn harder to cut, it is more likely to clump up which can make cutting the lawn take longer.

It gets worse. Wet grass can slow down your blades, and your lawn mower will no longer be able to cut at its optimal speed. As grass builds up in the deck, the blades slow down which leads to a mower tearing rather than cutting the grass.

Torn grass is more susceptible to disease, drought, and in my experience it just doesnt look as nice.

Now, it may come as no surprise, but there will be times when you have to compromise between Tip #2, the 1/3rd rule, and cutting the lawn when it is wet. There will always be times of the year when cutting wet grass is simply inevitable.

When it comes to cutting a wet lawn, or breaking the 1/3rd rule, just mow the wet lawn.

Pro Tip #: Dress The Part

Before you start mowing, its important that youre wearing the proper personal protective equipment. Your lawn mower has sharp cutting blades that can run over your foot. Your PPE, such as gloves and boots without laces, will prevent you from getting injured while handling a lawn mower. A face shield or goggles will protect your eyes from grass cuttings and dust, and ear plugs will protect your ears from the deafening noise of the mower. You definitely want to make sure that youre safe while mowing your lawn.

Whats The Best Lawn Mower

The type of lawn mower you choose depends on your yards needs. Rotary mowers are the most commonly used for residential and commercial lawn maintenance. For athletic fields and golf courses, reel mowers are preferred due to their ability to cut at extremely low heights with higher rates of frequency.

  • Rotary mowers. These lawn mowers use a rotating horizontal blade to cut grass. The blade spins fast enough to chop turf into tiny pieces, but taller grass can slow the blade and stall the engine. Some rotary mowers have a special housing unit where cut grass is suspended as its repeatedly minced into fine pieces. This is called a mulching mower.
  • Reel mowers. These mowers have a set of cylindrical, angled blades that spin in a vertical, circular pattern to cut turf grass with a scissoring action. Although reel mowers can either be manual or engine-driven, their close-cropping ability means lawns must be mowed more frequently to maintain the quality of the cut.

Professional Lawn Tips: Get a Professional Looking Lawn ...

Many homeowners dread the task of mowing, but it is a necessary and unavoidable maintenance chore that must be done with great frequency over the spring, summer, and often, into the late fall. This time consuming, never-ending yard grooming can become an imposition to busy homeowners, but there are several good reasons to cut your grass regularly.

  • Natural Fertilization: When grass clippings are left on the lawn, they decompose and reenter the soil, enriching it, and thus, improving the overall health and beauty of the grass.
  • Distribution of Resources: Grass that is uniform in length will grow more uniform in color and consistency because when all blades are the same length, the distribution of water and sunlight is even across the lawn.
  • Survival of the Fittest: The healthiest grass blades thrive and multiply when cut, increasing the overall health and improving the appearance of the yard.
  • Manicured Lawn: A freshly-cut lawn adds to the beauty of your landscape and increases the curb appeal of your home.

Hides Imperfections In Your Lawn

And, as an added bonus, cutting patterns in the grass can help hide the few small imperfections in your lawn. Everyone gets a localized dry spot or a small area of disease at some point, having nice stripes has been helping seemingly perfect golf courses give the illusion of the perfect lawn for years.

Lawn striping is an excellent way to set your lawns apart from the neighbors lawns and be the envy of the entire neighborhood. Now that you know the secrets, get out there and get stripingor diamondingor swirlingor zigzagging!

Makes For A Healthier Lawn

Another benefit is that mowing your grass a little higher will actually make it healthier. When more than one-third of the leaf blade is removed, there is less leaf area to absorb sunlight needed to perform photosynthesis to produce food. Consequently, the plant produces less food, resulting in a weaker plant thats susceptible to disease and insect damage.

Cutting more than one-third of the grass plant not only weakens the plant, it inhibits the growth of the roots, creating a small, shallow root system which cannot support the plant in times of drought. Grass that is allowed to grow tall will have strong, large root system below ground that can better withstand dry periods.

Mowing Stripes Are Easy To Create

It may appear that the stripes you see are created by cutting the grass at different heights or planting different types of seed. That is not the case at all. The stripes are caused simply because the light is reflecting off the blades of grass at different angles. Thats it! Because the grass is bent at a different angle, it reflects the sun differently creating stripes .

Rather than bagging the clippings from your lawn as you mow, your lawn will greatly benefit from a mulching blade on your mower. You dont have to buy a whole new mower but can purchase a mulching blade to replace the one you currently have. You should also check the manual that came with your mower, you might own a model that is capable of mulching with the flip of a switch.

Sharpen Mowing Blades Regularly

If you cant remember the last time you sharpened your lawn mower blade, its time to do so. A dull blade is about the worse thing you can do to a lawn, Vaughn said, because where sharp blades cut cleanly, dull blades tear. When you tear the leaf, it opens it up for diseases to attack it. A clean cut helps it regenerate a lot faster and be a healthier plant in the long run.

How often you need to get your blade sharpened will depend largely on how many hours of mowing it does. Mowing a large lawn frequently will cause more wear and tear than occasional use on a small patch of turf.

Your lawn will tell you if you have a dull blade. Take a look at the evenness of the cut and whether the individual blades of grass have been neatly sheared. An uneven, tatty appearance and torn leaves are your cues that its time to sharpen the blade.

You can take the mower into a shop to have the blade professionally sharpened, or you can do it yourself. Lawn mower blade sharpening kits cost as little as $10.

Inspect your blade. If there are chips or gaps, it may be time for a new one. Replacing a blade isnt too tough and can be accomplished with tools most of us have around the house.

Sharp Blades For A Clean Cut

If you want a professional finish to your lawn, then sharp blades are essential. The sharper the blades are, the cleaner the cut will be. And a cleaner cut results in less shock and stress while reducing the risk of bacteria and mould spores wreaking havoc.

Cutting grass with dull blades is like cutting hair with dull scissors. They rip, shred, tear and pull from the roots. It’s easy to forget that grass is a living organism. Yes, it is resilient. But everything has its limits. The gentler you are to your lawn, the better the end result will be. Give your mower blades a good sharpening at least three times a year or switch them out for some brand-new ones.

What Level Of Slope Or Gradient Can A Ride

With any ride-on mower, its important to remember that the machine should be used up and down the face of a slope, rather than side to side – this to reduce the likelihood of a rollover.

I always find it useful to have a manufacturers parameters to hand, so I know the limits of operation, however not all the manufacturers in my research share the level of slope that their ride-on brushcutter can be used on.

The ride-on brush cutter that can handle the biggest slope is the Iseki SRA 950F, with a maximum slope of 25 degrees, closely followed by both the Efco Tuaregs at 20 degrees. All of the Etesia ride-on brush cutters can handle slopes up to 17 degrees and the little Iseki SRA 800 comes in last with 15 degrees.

Pro Tip #5 Mow Once A Week In Different Directions

Depending on your grass growth rate, its usually recommended to mow once a week in different directions. Change up your lawn mowing patterns from vertical to horizontal to diagonal every time you mow to help make sure your grass grows straight, instead of leaning towards one direction only. Doing this helps give your turf develop greater density per area. This means youll have more grass blades in your lawn space, which helps give your lawn a thicker, fuller look, not so different from a well-volumized head of hair .

Don’t Mow On A Schedule

You wouldn’t take out the garbage just because it’s a Tuesday, right? You wait until it’s full. Treat mowing the same way. Mow as often as needed for your grass type, growing conditions, growth pattern, and season. If you tie yourself to some arbitrary schedule, you won’t be mowing when your lawn actually needs it. When grass is actively growing in the spring, for example, you’ll need to mow more frequently , but when growth slows during the heat of summer or at the end of the growing season, your lawn may only need to be mowed once every week or two . Of course, if you’re just not into having extra free time, you can go ahead and mow whenever you want, as long as the grass isn’t too short and the mower blade isn’t set too low. The lawn just doesn’t need it.

How Often Should You Mow Your Lawn

Professional Lawn Mower Grass Cutting Close Up Stock Image ...

One common misconception about home lawn maintenance is that grass should be mowed at a preset schedule. In fact, the best routine is to mow your lawn when its necessarynot when its convenient.

Lawns grow at different rates depending on the season, weather, management and species. So, how can you tell when its necessary to mow your lawn? Follow the one-third rule: Simply mow frequently enough so that no more than one-third of the leaf blade is removed in a single mowing.

Removing more of the grass blade than that may stunt root growth. So if your desired lawn height is 3 inches, mow when your grass grows to 4 to 4 1/2 inches tall.

Some other frequency-related lawn mowing tips include:

  • Mow every three to four days during periods of rapid grass growth
  • Mow every six to eight days during periods of moderate growth
  • Mow only as neededor not at allduring periods of drought or dormancy

For overgrown grass from vacationing or neglected lawns, dont overwork your mower by trying to get it all in one passmow as many times as needed in the same day, never removing more than one-third of the blade in a single pass, lowering the blades each time. For example, for 6-inch grass, pass first at a 4-inch cutting height, then again at a 3-inch cutting height.
