Dear Reader: Tall fescue is a dark green, wide bladed, deeply rooted perennial grass that is found growing everywhere. It is widely used along roads and on farms for erosion control. Because of its course texture it readily shows up in lawns where in comparison the desirable grasses are fine textured. The only control is Roundup when the plants are actively growing. It usually takes a couple of treatments to completely kill it. However, be patient and wait until you are sure it is dead before seeding new grass. Otherwise you will be back to square one! Once it dies, take a sharp spade and dice the clumps up and down like you were dicing an onion. Then sprinkle some new grass seed over the clump and water. This means that you cannot spray without killing the surrounding grass. So, how can you kill tall fescue without causing an impact on your lawn?
- Water the lawn if you are in the summer season. Watering the lawn will allow the tall fescue weed to grow faster than your grass. When the lawn is 2-4 inches tall, the weed will be 6-7 inches.
- Wear protective gear such as gloves, goggles, and a long-sleeved shirt.
- Soak a sponge into the herbicide containing glyphosate. Perform this on an area away from your lawn. Squeeze excess solution, so it does not drip on your lawn.
- Use the sponge to brush the blades of tall fescue weed. Also, you can use a fan spray nozzle setting where tall fescue is concentrated. This will help you get an even fine coating on the weed.
- Dig the fescue clumps weed after it dries completely. Also, you can leave it to decompose completely. It is advisable to treat fescue when it is young. A mature weed is more resistant to chemicals. It may need repeated applications, and can take about two weeks to die.
- To prevent further infestations, it is good to water and fertilize your lawn more regularly.

About Tall Fescue Weeds
Tall fescue was introduced to North America by European settlers who planted it to provide hardy, nutritious forage for livestock. Since the plant remains green even in dry conditions, it was widely planted in the 1990s to replace thirsty Kentucky bluegrass in drought-ravaged regions.
Tall fescue weeds are opportunistic, popping up in disturbed habitats, including along roadsides and railroad tracks, in pastures and abandoned fields, and sometimes along streambanks. It tolerates a wide range of soils and moisture conditions.
Although it was initially planted with only the best intentions in mind, tall fescue has naturalized into many parks and other public areas in the United States and southern Canada, where it competes with native species. It is considered an invasive species in many regions.

I was in the Farm Coop store the other day in line to buy some garden seeds. The farmer in front of me ordered fifty pounds of Kentucky 31 Tall Fescue. I thought, Oh my God, you poor dear, havent you heard?

Those seeds are infected with an internal fungus that secretes an alkaloid that will be toxic to your livestock.
We should not plant another seed of Tall Fescue. Not only is it invasive and non-native , it is toxic to just about everything that consumes it and it inhibits the growth of other plants.
Tall Fescue is one of the most dominant grasses found in pastures, hayland, lawns, roadsides, wetlands and vacant lots throughout most of North America. It is almost always infected with an internal fungus, an endophyte , which produces an alkaloid that is toxic.
Weve known for years its grave effects on pregnant horses: abortions, thickened placentas, and limited milk. Cattle get fescue toxicosis or summer slump which includes elevated body temperature, hoof rot, tail rot, lower conception rates and lower weight gain.

Great Tips To Help You Spray And Eliminate Ryegrass
Ryegrass is a stubborn type of grass, and before eliminating, it considers several things.
Here are brands you can check out, but feel free to check out on more varieties at your local herbicide stores:
- Clampdown wipes everything. Its non-selective and is effective for both perennial and annual varieties of ryegrass. Use a rate of 200Mls for every 20 liters of spray.
- Hurricane is a super-fast with results on ryegrass visible within two hours of application. The application rate is 150 Mls for every 20 litters clean water.
- Eliminate ryegrass selectively, leaving other grasses to thrive. Spray with Digester Super.
Herbicides are toxic chemicals that inhibit the growth of ryegrass alongside other weeds by deploying various physical and psychological models.
Pay attention to user manuals and seek professional help if unsure of something. At the bare minimum, do not handle herbicides with open skins or direct breath. Ecologically, safe disposal of chemical and container remains, which have effects on the environment.
Local experts are helpful, especially when it comes to sharing tips related to herbicide application in light of local prevalent weather conditions.
Precautions For New Lawns
It should also be noted that there are precautions for new lawns with regard to preemergence use. A new lawn must have time to become well-established, as preemergence herbicides can inhibit lawn grass root growth. Always read the label thoroughly for specifics regarding seeding. On fescue lawns, preemergence herbicides should not be applied in the fall if the lawn is to be over-seeded. If over-seeded by October, any preemergence herbicide application would have to be delayed until spring
for summer weed control. To keep a tall fescue lawn thick and more weed-free, consider over-seeding one fall, and alternating that with a preemergence herbicide application the next fall. In sodded areas, preemergence herbicides should be used only on well-established turfgrass tall fescue.
For bermudagrass lawns to be over-seeded with annual ryegrass, delay seeding until 6 to 16 weeks after the preemergence herbicide application .
Postemergence herbicides can be applied to newly seeded lawns at ½ the rate, but only after the lawn has been mowed four times. If overseeding after a postemergence herbicide treatment, you must wait three to four weeks, depending on the product used. Postemergence herbicides should not be applied if summer temperatures are greater than 90 °F.
