Homemade Clover Killer With Vinegar
White vinegar contains the active ingredient, acetic acid, which is useful to use as an herbicide. Spraying certain weeds with vinegar causes them to turn brown and eventually die after repeated applications. Try this homemade weed killer for killing clover with vinegar as a safe alternative to using herbicidal chemicals such as dicamba found in Roundup.

To make this DIY organic weed killer, pour vinegar into a garden sprayer or spray bottle and add a squirt of dish soap. Shake gently dont make too many bubbles/ The dish soap helps the white vinegar stick to the clover weeds, enabling the acetic acid to work better.
This method works best to get rid of broadleaf plantain and other weeds if performed on a non-breezy and sunny day with no rain in the immediate forecast. Set the sprayer nozzle to stream to prevent over-spraying other plants in flower beds and spot-treat the weeds by spraying them directly with the vinegar solution.
Repeat every couple of days until the weeds are dead. Use a shovel to remove the dead plant, making sure to remove the root system to prevent regrowth.

Deprive It Of Oxygen And Sunlight
You can kill clover by blocking it from all oxygen and sunlight. Take plastic sheeting or a garbage bag and place it over the patch, securing the corners with rocks to make sure it doesnt fly up. This should get rid of the clover in a few weeks. Be mindful that this approach will also kill any grass that gets under the plastic.
How To Kill It Without Destroying Your Lawn
Lets get the obvious method out of the waygood old fashioned manual labor. You can spare the grass from its demise by digging the plants up. However, this is usually used to get rid of smaller patches of clover in your grasses. If youre working with a ton of weeds, youre going to have to take another route.
We have already discussed using corn gluten as an organic pre-emergent herbicide product. It wont harm the grass on your lawn.
If youre going to use a broadleaf chemical herbicide, you will need to ensure that the product is designed to control broadleaf weeds on your specific grass type. The herbicide for your grass type will differ only slightly from other products for different grasses, but that slight difference is what will kill the clover without harming the grass on your lawn.
Also note, vinegar is not a selective herbicide. It will kill any and all plant life. If you use it and accidentally wind up spot spraying it onto your desired grass, then your grass will also suffer.

How To Identify Clover
Clover is a perennial plant that grows almost everywhere in lawns, alleys, flower beds, and even vegetable gardens. It is quite easy to identify with its leaves which are made up of three leaflets or its small white flowers in round clusters.

White clover grows in a creeping fashion and develops roots where a stem node touches the ground. The flowering period for clover begins in April and ends in September. Step #2 Pick The Right Time
For clover and other weeds to be susceptible to herbicides they need to be in a stage of active growth. For clover this means that daytime temperatures should be at least 60°F. Spraying them when temperatures are colder will lead to an incomplete uptake of the herbicide and lackluster results. However, spraying weeds when temperatures are too hot can also be problematic. When applied in times of high heat, many herbicides will damage desirable grass in addition to killing weeds. For T-Zone temperatures should not exceed 85°F, for Hi-Yield Triclopyr, SpeedZone Southern and Dismiss they should not exceed 90°F.
Herbicides should not be applied lawns that are wet. Dew, rain or irrigation water can all dilute even the best products and prevent them from sticking to the weeds. Thus, grass should be dry and no rain should be forecast for at least 12 to 24 hours.
When spraying most weeds it is advised not be mow the grass beforehand as reducing the size of the weeds makes for smaller targets for herbicides. However, when fighting clover mowing beforehand is a good idea as tall grass can actually prevent the herbicides from reaching the low-growing clover. Mowing, however, should be avoided for at least 24 hours after the application so as to allow ample time for the product to work its way into the clover.
Best Post Emergent Herbicides
Post-emergent herbicides are the best way to kill clover. Just keep in mind they require a little patience since it could take a couple weeks for the clover to die back.
My 3 go to products for killing clover are:
1.Ortho Weed B Gone Plus Crabgrass Control This is a great product to have on hand because of how easy it is to use. It comes with a battery operated wand so theres no need for a tank sprayer. Its the go to post emergent in my 3 product lawn care plan. It kills clover and other broad leaf weeds as well as some undesirable grasses such as crabgrass.
2.Ortho Weed B Gone Chickweed, Clover, Oxalis Kiler This is another Weed B Gone product that has different active ingredients which are more specific in targeting clover. If clover is your main problem and you dont have many other broad leaf weeds then this product is a great choice. It is sold as a concentrate so will require mixing with a tank sprayer.
3.Tenacity Tenacity is a concentrate that works a little differently then the other post-emergents. Rather then poisoning the plant, it works by blocking photosynthesis. With Tenacity, it might take 7-10 days before you begin to see whitening of the plant. Eventually it will look like your treated weeds are bleached.
Also note that you might see some temporary whitening of the desirable grasses but they will ultimately green back up.

Use Corn Gluten On Clover
Another way to get rid of clover is to use corn gluten. Corn meal gluten kills off the clover without harming nearby plants. It works by releasing organic dipeptides into the soil. The dipedtides dry out the clovers seeds and make it hard for them to sprout. This well-reviewed product can be used by mixing three parts water to one part corn gluten. One liter of this mixture will cover about 1,000 square feet. Once applied, be sure to water well and then allow it to dry.
Note: While the dipedtides have worked to get rid of clover for some, corn gluten hasnt worked for all, and is therefore not universally regarded as a solution for dealing with clover.
