However, there are a few different types of clover, and they dont all look the exact same.

While clover typically has dark green leaves, they can be white as well, and may also have pink or yellow flowers.

How To Identify Clover In Your Yard

There are three types of clover that are most commonly found in lawns: white clover, red clover, and microclover. White and red clover are easily identified by their sphere-shaped clusters of tiny blooms and trio of petal-shaped leaves, each leaf bearing a white crescent or a V shape and measuring approximately one-half inch in size. The clover plant normally grows to no more than four to six inches in height although it can reach as much as 12 inches in height.

White clover can be found blooming from early spring until late fall. Red clover begins to bloom in late March and continues into April and can continue to bloom into early summer. Microclover is identified by leaves that are approximately half the size of white and red clover leaves. Once microclover has been mowed it may grow back at only one-third its original size. Microclover has significantly fewer flowers than red or white clover and its growth is denser and more far-reaching than the red or white varieties.

Microclover looks more uniform than other varieties of clover found in lawns, especially after its flowers have been removed by mowing. It grows lower to the ground than its counterparts. The fact that all varieties of this plant tend to grow close together makes it easy to spot clover patches in your yard.

How To Prevent Clover From Developing In The Lawn

Following these tips will help prevent your lawn from suffering from clover.

• Fertilise the lawn. Keep the lawn fertilised to keep the grass long and strong. Clover does not require nitrogen to be present in the lawn for it to appear. It actually adds nitrogen back into the soil.
• Dont cut the grass too short. A longer grass blade will be able to shade out clover, thus tipping the balance towards your grass. Cutting your grass short will stress your grass which will lead to low growth and a higher chance of clover being able to take hold.
• Water the grass regularly. Keeping your grass watered will lower prevent your grass from becoming stressed. Be careful not to over water your lawn though.
• Dont collect grass clippings. Allowing your grass clippings to naturally decompose into your lawn will add nitrogen back into the soil. This will act as a natural fertiliser.
• Cutting length of the grass. Never cut your grass by any more than 1/3 of its current length. This will stop the grass from becoming stressed.
• . Decompact the soil once a year by aerating the soil.

If your lawn already contains some clover and you would like to prevent it from spreading any further, apply a corn gluten solution directly to the clover leaves and flowers.

Corn gluten works by releasing organic dipeptides into the soil. These will dry out the clover seeds and prevent them from germinating elsewhere in your lawn.

The only way to effectively remove large quantities of clover from your lawn is to apply a specific broad-leafed herbicide designed to kill clover without harming other grasses.

Purchase a clover-specific broad-leaf herbicide. Read the label thoroughly and pick an herbicide that will not harm the majority of grass in your yard. Consult with a garden expert at the plant nursery or home improvement center to select the right herbicide.
