How Do I Eliminate The Weeds Without Destroying My Grass

How to Kill Weeds Naturally

The biggest challenge concerning getting rid of weeds in the grass is making sure that you kill the weeds and not the lawn. Many people dont actually believe that such a thing is possible with homemade weed killers, but even the mixtures mentioned above can be achieved with a little precision. Simply wipe the vinegar or salt concoctions on the leaves of the plants, rather than spraying and you should be fine. It might take a bit longer, though they say patience is a virtue.

Other, less invasive methods involve letting your grass grow taller while the weeds are coming up. The tall grass might do enough to block out the sunlight for the weeds. The stronger roots might even be able to choke out the weeds roots before they have a chance to do the same. Weeds are resilient little buggers though, so dont rely on your grass to do the work for you.

More invasive methods involve something called flame weeding, which involves using a long wand on the end of a propane tank to literally burn out weeds. We would not recommend doing this on grass, however, as it may cause a fire. Frankly, we wouldnt recommend this practice at all we just thought it would be neat to mention it.

Can You Spray Weed Killer On Grass

There are several weed killers that are formulated to be safe for grass but harmful to weeds. These herbicides work by including ingredients that target broadleaf weeds and pest grasses, but dont attack your lawn grass. The best weed killer for your lawn depends on the type of grass you are growing, but a grass-safe spray can be easily found for every grass type:

  • Kills weeds without harming your lawn.
  • You can expect results within only a few hours.
  • Easy-to-use on a variety of grass types.

When you use the correct weed killer for your lawn, your grass wont be harmed but the weeds will be wiped out in just a few days. This allows your lawn to thrive.

  • Will kill weeds, but not your lawn.
  • Contains Atrazine.

Control Crab Grass With A Crab Grass Preventer In The Spring

  • Apply a crab grass pre-emergence preventer between the first and third mowings in the spring.
  • Preventers usually come as granules that you put on the lawn with a spreader.
  • Make notes in the fall about where your crab grass seems to thrive and treat those areas in the spring.
  • Once crab grass shows up in your lawn, you have three options:
  • Hand-pull the clumps to prevent the plant from reseeding itself.
  • Let the crab grass go until the following spring and then use a preventer at the right time.
  • Treat clumps with a post-emergence crab grass killer.

Willbleach Kill Weeds Permanently

Bleach will kill most small weeds. It won’t work against larger or invasive weeds like Ivy, Brambles or Knotweed. If you use it on soiled areas you will no longer be able to use that space for growing, it can take several months before your soil is suitable for planting.

Bleach is not good for the environment so I dont recommend using it in the garden. You could use it on areas like cracks in the concrete of your driveway but the recipe I listed above is just as effective and wont harm wildlife.

Best Lawn Weeding Tools

Kill Weeds Naturally with Vinegar

Weeding is admittedly one of the most dreaded gardening tasks that we all dislike. While pulling weeds by hand is a back-breaking task, a better alternative is to use a gardening tool. The following weeding tools will make your battle with weeds much easier:

There are two basic types of weeding tools: short-handled and long-handled tools. The short-handled weeding tools require you to work on your knees, while the latter allows you to stand and weed a larger area.

ToolsFor shallow-rooted weeds

I recommend using a short-handles garden hoe or a sharp knife for medium-size weeds. Start by cutting the weeds at slightly below the soil line. Angle the hoe so the tip of the sharp blade touches the soil below the ground surface.

Tools For deep-rooted weeds

Its best to use a weeding tool like a claw weeder. To use this tool, place the tip of the claw blade next to the weeds stem and push down in a vertical motion. The weeder should then be articulated by the foot peddle in order to get the entire root out.

Keep in mind that using claw weeders can be a more time-consuming task than hoes as you need to remove each weed individually. Having said that, the tool works effectively for deep-rooted weeds.

How Homemade Weed Killer Works

The vinegar draws moisture out of the plant, killing it in the process. Spray during the hottest part of the day and make sure there isnt rain in the forecast for at least 24-48 hrs.

This homemade weed killer recipe is not only cheap, but is completely non-toxic to humans and animals.

Some of the weeds may need a second application later to completely kill them off, but most of them will be dead and gone after several days.

Fast And Natural Ways To Kill Weeds

How to Get Rid of Lawn Weeds Organically, Naturally

Its summer time and the weeds are growing like, um, weeds. Instead of reaching for a toxic chemical that could be harmful to your family or pets, try one of these easy natural ways to kill weeds quick.

  • Use mulch to smother weeds. Covering garden soil with a mulch blocks weeds. Use two or three inches of shredded bark, wood chips, straw, cocoa bean hulls, gravel or rocks. The mulches will also keep moisture in the soil so youll have to water less frequently.
  • Douse weeds with boiling water. Weeds, like humans, will burn if exposed to boiling water. This method also kills weed seeds.
  • Soap weeds to death. Mix 5 tablespoons of liquid soap in one quart of water in a spray bottle. Coat the weeds with the soapy water. Works best on hot days.
  • Pickle weeds with vinegar. Pour household vinegar into a spray bottle and evenly coat weeds with it. U.S. Department of Agriculture scientists recently confirmed this in tests. Vinegar is really five percent acetic acid in water, and it burns the plant, especially on sunny days. For extra strength weed killer, look for pickling vinegar, which is nine percent acetic acid. Dont get the vinegar on your garden plants, as it can kill them too.
  • Give weeds a stiff drink of alcohol. Mix one to five tablespoons of alcohol depending on how stubborn the weeds are with one quart of water in a spray bottle. Shower weeds with the spray. Dont let the alcohol get on garden plants as it may damage their leaves.

    Dowse Them With Boiling Water

This natural weed killer is practically free, and you definitely already have it on hand. All you need is a stove, a pot, and some tap water. Or, better yet, if you happen to have a stovetop tea kettle or an electric kettle, this process will be even easier. All you need to do is boil water, and then pour it directly on unwanted weeds. You may have to do this more than once if you have weeds with deep tap roots, but it will eventually kill them off. Be sure to avoid pouring boiling water on desired plants, since this is an indiscriminate killer.

Sprinkle The Weeds And Soil With Salt

Table salt is an effective, inexpensive, natural weed killer that will dehydrate unwanted plants and render the soil barren well into the future. That is the thing about salt: It is incredibly effective at killing weeds, but it will also kill any other plants in the area, and nothing will grow in that soil for at least several months. On a small scale, you can use a minimal amount of salt to kill weeds, and then irrigate the area regularly to dilute the salt so that you will, one day, be able to plant there again. However, it is safest to only use this method in areas where you have no future plans for growing anything at all. For example, driveway cracks or walkways made of gravel or wood chips are good candidates for salt-based weed control.

While salt is non-toxic to humans and animals, you will need to take a few precautions with this one. First, you will need to be careful when applying it to hardscapes and be sure to get it only in the cracks, since salt can corrode concrete and concrete pavers. Secondly, it is imperative that you do not use salt in areas where runoff could carry it to flowerbeds, a natural grass lawn, or other areas where you want to keep the soil healthy.

Make A Vinegar Weed Killer At Home With Dish Soap And Salt

If you do not have any extra vodka lying around, or you simply do not want to part with it, you can also whip up a vinegar weed killer using vinegar, dish soap and salt. You have two options here: You can fill your spray bottle with vinegar and add a few drops of natural dish soap and a pinch of salt, or you can fill your spray bottle with vinegar, add the dish soap and skip the salt. Which one you choose really just depends on your future plans for the area of your yard that is currently covered in weeds. Either of these homemade herbicides will kill the weeds, but if you choose the salt option, it will also most likely make the soil unamenable to growing desirable plants in that area for at least a few months.

Can I Get Rid Of Weeds In A Lawn Naturally

How to Kill Crabgrass Naturally (without killing your lawn)

Yes! But it may take more time and effort. Spraying vinegar directly on weeds is a natural way to get rid of them. It dries out the plant leaves and kills whats above the ground.

Also, pick vinegar that contains more than the standard 5 percent acetic acid. Head to a home improvement store instead of the supermarket to find vinegar with 10 to 20 percent acetic acid.

If you spray that, you can kill 80 to 100 percent of weeds top growth, found USDA research.

This method works best for a few weeds spread throughout the lawn. For larger spreads, its best to go with a safe, effective herbicide.

Killing Weeds With Brains And Brawn

For the organic gardener, a thoughtful approach and diligent maintenance are the tools of the trade. Close consideration to detail when planning a garden and continuing and consistent management to the planting environment can mean the difference between enjoying a productive crop and watching plants wither.

“Growing organically, you’re pretty much using brains and brawn,” says Sarah Voiland of Red Fire Farm, a certified organic grower in Montague, Massachussets. Red Fire operates through farmers’ markets and their consumer supported agriculture program and have been providing organically grown produce since 2001.

“A lot of it is just about planning,” Voiland continues. “You’ve got to think about what crops are weed sensitive and make sure they’re going into a field that doesn’t have high weed pressure. That’s done by rotating where you plant particular crops. For example, winter squash is fairly easy to keep “clean” . Because a field where the squash was grown finishes pretty clean, we can follow it with something like carrots, which are a huge job for weeding. That way the carrots won’t face as much weed pressure.”

The practice of crop rotation is important for the home gardener as well. Keeping a journal of where different plant families were sown each year and changing crop placements each year will reduce environmental pressures and ease the burden weed-intensive crops can bring.

As with many things, the answer lies in a little hard work.

What Is The Difference Between Henbit And Chickweed

Its scalloped leaves have a purple cast and the plants will be covered in tiny trumpet-shaped blooms in April. Henbit will die when temperatures get hot. Chickweed has the same lifecycle, germinating in the fall then producing tiny white flowers on top of a mounding weed with small, round, bright green leaves.

Apply A Vodka Spray To Kill Weeds

[How to KILL WEEDS] in Your Lawn WITHOUT KILLING the GRASS

For weeds growing in well-lit areas, one natural weed killer you can try is vodka. This alcoholic solution dries out plants, with a few drops of dish soap to hold the vodka in place and allowing the sunlight to take care of the rest. The vodka removes the protective waxy coating on plant leaves, making them more susceptible to withering and burning.

    • 5 drops of dish detergent

This solution works best when applied via a spray bottle, though you want to avoid getting it on any other plants in the area that you dont want to be dried out. This option doesnt work so well in shaded areas, however, so stick to locations with plenty of light.

Use Your Grandmothers Favorite Homemade Weed Killer: Vinegar

Vinegar is one of the best-known natural weed killers and has been used for this purpose for just about as long as people have been trying to rid their yards of weeds. You will be best served by picking up vinegar with 20% acetic acid, which you can purchase online or at your local garden center. The stuff you buy at the grocery store has only 5% acetic acid and is great for cleaning and all sorts of household tasks, but it will not kill weeds as effectively as vinegar with 20% acetic acid. Once you have acquired your vinegar, simply put it in a garden sprayer or spray bottle and spray it directly on the leaves of unwanted plants. This is another indiscriminate killer, so you will need to make sure you do not accidentally spray any on desirable plants. You will likely need to repeat the vinegar treatment two or three times to get the job done.

How To Kill Grass And Weeds With Alcohol

Alcohol breaks down the wax cuticle on the leaves of weeds and blades of grass. Without this protection, the plants will become dehydrated in the afternoon sun, leaving them to die. This recipe works well for getting rid of grass growing in flower beds in sunny locations.

Combine the alcohol, water, and a few squirts of dish soap into a spray bottle and give it a gentle shake to mix. Be sure to label the container for safety purposes.

Spray the alcohol solution directly onto the grass and weeds that need eliminating during the mid-day sun, making sure to avoid desirable plants. Use this remedy as a way to kill nutsedge or other pesky unwanted plants in smaller areas. Repeat daily until the grass or weeds die.
