What Causes Dog Urine Spots

How To Fix Pet Urine Spots on Lawn – Ace Hardware

There are a lot of myths about dog urine and its effect on turfgrass. Well get to debunking some of those myths in a little bit. But first, we need to talk about what causes those spots in the first place. Many people here lawn experts refer to dog urine burning grass and assume we are referring to pH. In fact, it is something much simpler.

Dog urine contains a lot of nitrogen. While nitrogen is usually a good thing for your lawnit is the main ingredient in most fertilizerstoo much of a good thing can be bad for your grass. Concentrated nitrogen can burn and kill your grass. However, this nitrogen overload also helps explain the distinct appearance of dog urine burn spots.

Urine spots often start as dark green patches. That deep green color is the result of heavily fertilized grass. Eventually, especially if your dog continues to pee in the same spot, you may end up with a dead patch of grass surrounded by a dark green ring. The dead patch is where the high concentration of nitrogen has killed the grass, and the dark ring is where the urine is less concentrated, and the grass is vigorously growing.

Only Female Dogs Cause Spotting In Lawns

FALSE. Dog spotting in lawns is most often caused by dogs that squat when they urinate, thus depositing a large volume of concentrated urine in a small area. Most squatters are female dogs, but some males do this as well, especially in their own yard. Many male dogs tend to mark vertical objects in the landscape , which presents problems for \ landscape plants.

Do Grass Saving Supplements For Dogs Work

Ive never used them so I cant say based on experience but grass-saving supplements are designed to change the pH of the urine and some add additional salt to the body, but remember, urine burn on grass is caused by nitrogen.

Its always best to check with your veterinarian before adding any new supplements to your dogs diet but I am not a fan of altering my dogs pH.

When you do this you risk creating urine crystals or bladder stones which will cause much bigger issues than urine burns.

The medications that contain salt are supposed to make your dog drink more water and in turn, their urine will be more diluted.

Giving your dog any amount of unnecessary salt isnt the best option and it can cause harm to pets that have underlying kidney or heart disease.

If you have concerns about your dogs urine you should always speak with your veterinarian before trying any other products.

And since I know someone is going to mention the dog rocks that you put in a dogs water bowl, yes, Ive heard of them and no Im not ever going to use them.

My first reason is that Leroy used to swallow rocks so that wasnt an option.

Second, these rocks remove nitrates from the water and the nitrates in water arent the issue.

Its the nitrogen from the protein that your dog is eating.

And last, science doesnt believe that these work, so theres that.

Dilute The Nitrogen With Water

Remember, diluted nitrogen can act as a fertiliser for your grass, its just too concentrated in your dogs wee. After your dog has urinated on a particular patch of grass, use a watering can or garden hose to pour some water on top of the area.

This helps to dilute the nitrogen. It also prevents the dry grass and soil from soaking up too much of it and becoming damaged.

Train In A Designated Area

Easy Way To Fix Burnt Grass & Dog Urine Spots

Training your dog to go in a designated area can take time but can also save your lawn. You might want to consider creating a pile of gravel as the pee spot or choose an area of the lawn thats not so visible. You could also put a pee post in your yard, like the Lulind Dog Fire Hydrant Garden Statue or the Simple Solution Pee Post thats infused with pheromones to attract your dog.

How To Keep Your Lawn Lush And Green

The most effective way to prevent dog urine spots is to water the area immediately after your dog urinates. If you have easy access to a hose or a rain barrel, give the area a quick dousing. I also have a tub in my sink that I use to catch excess water when Iâm at the sink instead of letting it go down the drain, I collect it and use it to water my plants. This idea could be used to water the lawn as well, while remaining mindful of the environment.

The kind of grass you put in your yard also determines how well it will tolerate dog urine. So, if youâre planting â or replanting â a lawn, choose your grass type with that in mind. Fescue and perennial ryegrass are the most urine tolerant, while bluegrass and bermudagrass seem to be the most sensitive.

There are also several species of taller grasses that are salt tolerant and fairly urine resistant including: Zoysia, Paspalum, and Distichlis. A tall meadow is a natural alternative to a traditional lawn. But you could also consider another lawn substitute like white clover or OâConnorâs strawberry clover, both of which are easy to maintain. Another plus: They require less water and, being nitrogen-fixing themselves, require less fertilization. Speaking of fertilization, if you fertilize your lawn, be sure to use a reduced nitrogen fertilizer.

Set Up A Small Corner For Your Pet

The second option would be to create a small corner for your pet. You can create a small space for him in gravel, stone dust or mulch. And then, little by little, encourage and get your dog used to relieving himself in that corner to keep the rest of your lawn healthy while guaranteeing your dog the right to play outside.

Why Does Dog Urine Damage Grass

The reason why urine turns grass brown or yellow has to do with chemistry. Understanding why this happens is your first step toward preventing it and retaining your nice lawn.

Nitrogen is an essential component of healthy soil, but high concentrations of it can cause patches of grass to die and turn yellow or brown. Urine is naturally rich in nitrogen, and high concentrations of nitrogen can cause grass burns. Lawn fertilizer also contains nitrogen. Oftentimes the dead grass is surrounded by an exceptionally lush, green ring of growth, which occurs due to the fertilizing effects of lower concentrations of nitrogen.

Salts and other compounds found in dog urine may also contribute to grass damage. Highly acidic or alkaline urine may alter the pH of the soil, adversely affecting the grass in the areas of the yard where your dog urinates.

Some people believe that female dog urine causes more trouble to the lawn than male dog urine. However, the chemical composition of the urine doesn’t differ much between male and female dogs. It’s actually the way the dogs urinate that is to blame. Female dogs can cause more damage to grass simply because most tend to squat and urinate in one place many males lift a leg and “mark” upright objects in multiple locations. For example, when a male dog pees on a tree trunk, only some of it may drip down to the grass and cause damage. This is less noticeable than the round spots of damage made by urine puddles.

Why Does Dog Urine Cause Spots On The Grass

Repairing Dog Urine Patches in Your Lawn

Dog urine has a high-level concentration of nitrogen that makes it stain or burn the grass, leading to yellow spots. Although nitrogen is essential for healthy grass growth, high amounts cause damage. Note that dogs like urinating in the same area, making the yellow patches larger.

Many dogs eat a high amount of protein in the diet. When protein is processed through the body, it gets converted by the kidneys into nitrogen. The nitrogen exits the body in urine form. Dog urine also has high concentrations of salts and acids that contribute to the problem.

How Long Does It Take For Gypsum To Work Its Magic

Your grass will green up again in a few weeks up to a few months. While youre waiting for the gypsum to work its magic, you can designate an area on your Rockland County yard for Fluffy to do his business.

For example, we at Majestic Lawn Care and Landscape, design a space on your property thats dedicated to your dogs toilet area. We can add mulch or stones that wont wilt and go brown from Fluffys urine.

We can reseed the damaged areas so you can have a robust green lawn throughout your NJ/NY property.

Conversely, you may be a lucky homeowner whose dog produces greener grass instead of brown spots when it goes to the bathroom.

You may want to have a soil test for other parts of your property to see if these areas need more nitrogen since theyre not as green those areas where your pooch goes potty.

Myths About Dog Urine Spots

With yellow spots on grass come many urban legends about dog urine and how it can affect your lawn. Its important to separate fact from fiction regarding lawn care and your pets health.

Dog urine spots are a common problem for home lawns. There are several urban myths surrounding the cause and the cure of the spots, says Ali Harivandi, former environmental horticulture adviser at the University of California Cooperative Extension.

How To Stop Grass Damage

There are a few ways to prevent brown or yellow spots on your lawn that are caused by dog urine. Although there’s no guaranteed way to end urine spots in the yard, you can take steps to minimize the damage.

Keep in mind that other animals might have access to your yard, and their urine can cause lawn damage as well. A fence will keep out any dogs that are passing by, but cats and various wild animals are not so easy to stop. This may explain why you continue to see brown or yellow spots in the yard after you’ve tried everything with your own dog.

Daily watering can minimize these spots. Some people also opt to use a special animal deterrent. If you do this, make sure it’s safe for your dog and other animals. The idea is to repel the animals, not harm them.

Why Does Dog Urine Kill Grass

Most people assume that urine kills grass because of its low pH level, but thats actually not the case. The truth is a little more complicated, and you have to examine the chemical makeup of dog urine to get the full story.

Looking at the main components of dog urine, youll find urea basically an ammonia-rich byproduct created when your dog metabolizes proteins.

Because dogs are carnivorous, their urea is full of nitrogen.

While nitrogen is important for a plants growth, too much nitrogen will harm the plant and eventually kill it. This causes the patches of brown you may notice on your lawn.

If you examine a brown patch, you may notice a bright green halo where the perimeter seems healthier than the rest of the lawn. This is because the grass absorbed some of the beneficial nitrogen but not enough to cause plant death.

Another common misconception is that only female dog pee kills grass, which also isnt true. This concept is due to the fact that females squat to do their business, causing a more concentrated deposit of urine in one area, therefore upping the risk of grass damage.

In other words, its the way your doggo unleashes a tinkle torrent that harms the grass it has nothing to do with the urine coming from a male or female dog. Plus, many males squat to relieve themselves too!

Certain types of grass are particularly sensitive to the components of dog urine.

Repairing Dog Urine Damage in Your Lawn

Although nitrogen is an essential component of healthy lawn soil, it can scald the lawn if in excess. Most grass fertilizers have nitrogen as one of the main ingredients. You know what happens if you over-fertilize a single spot. The area turns brown and eventually dies. Dog urine has the same adverse effects on your grass. If this happens, here is how to treat the grass.

  • Water can, sprinkler, or water spray bottle
  • Using the rake, remove the dead or browned part created by the dog urine.
  • Spray or sprinkle the affected area heavily with water.
  • Dress or fill the area with compost or soil
  • Spread the soils generously throughout the affected spot. Allow the soil or compost to seep deep into the root system.

Note: You should apply this method if the grassroots are not damaged.
