Lawn darts is a lawn game for two players or teams. A lawn dart set usually includes four large darts and two targets. The game play and objective are similar to both horseshoes and darts. The darts are similar to the ancient Roman plumbata. They are typically 12 inches long with a weighted metal or plastic tip on one end and three plastic fins on a rod at the other end. The darts are intended to be tossed underhand toward a horizontal ground target, where the weighted end hits first and sticks into the ground. The target is typically a plastic ring, and landing anywhere within the ring scores a point.

In 1970, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration classified sharp-pointed lawn darts as a “mechanical hazard,” a designation which prohibited the sale of lawn darts, unless the darts satisfied three requirements: Be packaged with specified warning label that advised of the potential for serious injury and cautioned parents to keep the product out of the reach of children, Include instructions on usage with warnings to avoid use when other persons or animals are within the field of play, and Not be sold in toy stores or toy departments. The Consumers Union and the Children’s Foundation petitioned the Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare , a different agency, to go further, asking that HEW use the emergency provisions of the Child Protection and Toy Safety Act of 1969 to ban outright, in addition to several other toys, “outdoor games with 13inch pointed darts weighing more than five ounces each.” When HEW refused, Consumers Union sued, seeking a judicial order instructing HEW to enact the ban on December 18, 1970, a federal judge held in favor of HEW.

I found a virgn, new in the box, unused set of lawn darts and thinking how popular they are as a collectible I spent some time taking pics and prepping the listing, only to have eBay tell me that I couldnt list it and if I tried I might get my account reviewed.

Im proud to admit that I was an 80s kid. Most of my childhood occurred during the 1980s and, damn right, my family owned a set of Jarts! Recently, I couldnt help but wonderCan you still buy Jarts? I have fond memories of playing Jarts in our front yard with family and neighborhood friends. It was actually a really fun game when played properly, and responsibly.
But as the saying goes kids will be kids. And we were kids. And sometimes kids do irresponsible things.
Jarts had just the right handle and were weighted in such a way that you almost had to chuck them straight up into the air just to see what would happen. They would fly up as high as you would throw them, with the point up and fins down then when they hit their peak gravity would force the heavier-sided point end down with the fins now up and they would spiral like a rocket down to the ground.
Once you figured out how this worked the new game with Jarts became seeing who could throw them the highest. You can imagine the danger! Jarts were not very sharp at all but with increasing downward speed, they would build up enough force that they could do some serious damage to property or even life.

Bring it to a toy collector show. You can Google shows in your area. There is an admission price usually of $5 to $20. Walk around and see if there are venders with vintage toys. I bet he would buy it in a heart beat.

The sale of the original lawn dart was banned in December of 1988 by the Consumer Product Safety Commission after an aggressive campaign by David Snow, whose daughter was accidentally killed by an errant Jart toss, to stop the sale of Jarts and the marketing of them to children.
So, you cant exactly purchase the original Jarts with metal tips from stores or even online anymore. But, there is a new safer version of the classic lawn dart game with safer dull tips on the Jarts rather than the dangerous metal tips.

Is It Illegal To Own Jarts
No. It is not illegal to own a set of classic Jarts. It is illegal for the original version of Jarts to be sold commercially, and people have been urged to destroy or discard the metal-tipped Jarts. However, it is not illegal to simply own them. I did read somewhere that it is illegal to use the classic metal-tipped Jarts on public property .
Jarts Nostalgia Is Still Available
If you grew up in the era when Jarts was a popular yard game, like I did, and you want to relive those nostalgic days maybe the newer safer version of Jarts just arent doing it for you. I get it. Without the danger, theyre just not the same.

For me Im content with the nostalgic memories and also grateful that nobody I know got seriously injured by Jarts when we were kids in the 80s. Im sure the new safer version is almost just as fun as the original. Personally I prefer to spend my outdoor leisure time on a disc golf course these days. But I might buy the nostalgic Jarts wall hanging to put up in my basement gameroom or something!
