Kill The Clover Using A Herbicide Or Organic Method

How to Get Rid of Clover in Your Lawn Without Killing the Grass

Once you have identified the type of clover, you can choose the best method for getting rid of it. If you want to use a herbicide, read the label carefully and follow the directions. You may need to treat your lawn more than once.

You can also get rid of clover organically by smothering it with a thick layer of mulch. This will prevent the clover from getting the sunlight it needs to grow.

If you dont want to use a herbicide, there are other ways to get rid of clover. You can try another organic method, such as vinegar or boiling water. However, these methods may not be as effective as a herbicide.

Use Organic Weed Killer

Organic weed killer might sound too good to be true when it comes to controlling lawn weeds, but a new one was recently introduced for clover control. Adios, an organic weed killer, will weaken and kill the clover in your lawn without harming any of your grass.

To use, spray Adios directly on the clover. As the clover weakens and dies, the grass will take over where the clover once was. Make sure to water your lawn correctly. If you apply Adios to a stressed lawn from lack of water or extreme heat, there is a higher risk the product will kill your grass as well as the clover.

Ideally, water your yard twice a week. Deep watering, where the grass receives one inch of water, is recommended. The perfect time to apply Adios is the day after a deep watering.

One of the best ways to prevent weeds is to mow your lawn at the correct height and frequency. Mowing too short will damage your grass more susceptible to weeds. Mowing too infrequently will allow the weeds to get a foothold. The best thing to do is mow often enough to remove no more than one-third of the grass height.

Getting Rid Of Clover In Your Lawn

October 25, 2018// by Scott Smith

White clover is a very easy weed to recognise, and you may have spent countless childhood hours hunting for the four-leaf version. While that can be a fun challenge, eradicating a clover infestation from your lawn is not.

A common weed in Australia, clover has the very recognisable three green serrated leaves topped by white, ball-shaped flowers and creeping stems. Clover is a legume plant that draws nitrogen from the air to store in its roots. It spreads easily throughout lawns via stems attached to the soil which grow into new plants. Clover is a winter-germinating weed, and will thrive and spread in spring when soil temperatures are mild and warm and plenty of sunlight reaches the soil surface.

Clover can often be quite difficult to get rid of, as it reseeds itself every year and will continue to come back. It spreads easily in a few different ways, and can even propagate from its own clippings.

Reasons For Clover In Your Lawn

You might be wondering what the reasons are for clovers in your lawn. Or what is causing clover invasion in your lawn. A healthy and well-fertilized lawn doesnt allow weed to grow. If the soil of your lawn is deficient in nutrients, dry and highly acidic soil, youre most likely to invite Clover to get over your lawn.

Lets have a look to learn about some of the causes of Clover in your lawn.

Clover loves acidic soil: A healthy lawn has a pH between 6.0 to 7.0. Too acidic and too alkaline soil promotes weed growth. Similarly, Clover can easily sprout up if your lawn has acidic soil.

Compact soil encourages clover growth: If the soil in your lawn is compacted, the essential nutrients such as nitrogen, oxygen, and water will hardly fulfill the plant requirements. Clover is drought resistant and doesnt need fertilizer to grow. Thats why it can grow well even on the compacted soil.

Poorly fertilized lawn promotes weed invasion: Normally, grass needs fertilizer for healthy growth and maintenance. In the absence of essential soil nutrients, weed invasion becomes easy. Clover plants make their nitrogen fertilizer by getting nitrogen from the air. It is the leading cause that these perennial weeds can grow even in nutrient-deficient soil.

Shorter turf provides an ideal medium for Clover to grow: Clover plants spread horizontally on the ground. If you mow your grass too short, these weeds receive sufficient sunlight to grow. Therefore, mow your lawn higher than 3 inches.

Clover Control: How To Get Rid Of Clover

Clover is one of the most recognizable broadleaf weeds on lawns and turf. Clover is a perennial weed that grows low to the ground and is very persistent where established.

Even though it is a weed, clover is actually a helpful addition to your lawn as it contains certain characteristics that keep your lawn healthy. If you’re keeping a nice uniform lawn, you may hate the sight of it and want it gone.

Clover weed prefers nutrient-rich, moist soils. Dry and shady sites are not ideal conditions for growth. The notable characteristic of clover are its three-leaves which are rounded. There are many different species of clover and they can produce heads or dense spikes of small red, purple, white, or yellow flowers.

Why Do I Have So Much Clover In My Lawn

If you have clover growing in your lawn then just the same as moss it suggests that the condition of your soil is far from the perfect condition required for lush green grass to grow.

Clover is a weed and it will grow in soil with practically any pH level whereas your grass needs a certain level of pH to thrive. Clover will also grow in soil that is deficient in nutrients, especially soil that is deficient in nitrogen.

If your lawn is not in perfect condition and has drought problems, drainage problems, or has become compacted this will make your grass struggle to grow healthy and when your grass is struggling that is when clover takes over.

To summarise reasons you have clover growing in your lawn:

    • Your lawn may be at the wrong pH level for your grass to thrive
    • If your soil is deficient in nutrients your grass may not thrive but clover probably will
    • Your soil may be stressed due to lack of water due to drought, stressed grass is less dense which leaves room for clover to grow.
    • If your soil has become compacted the grass on your lawn will find it difficult to thrive whereas clover has longer roots which make it more able to thrive in adverse conditions.

How To Identify Clover In Your Yard

    Getting Rid of Clover

There are three types of clover that are most commonly found in lawns: white clover, red clover, and microclover. White and red clover are easily identified by their sphere-shaped clusters of tiny blooms and trio of petal-shaped leaves, each leaf bearing a white crescent or a V shape and measuring approximately one-half inch in size. The clover plant normally grows to no more than four to six inches in height although it can reach as much as 12 inches in height.

White clover can be found blooming from early spring until late fall. Red clover begins to bloom in late March and continues into April and can continue to bloom into early summer. Microclover is identified by leaves that are approximately half the size of white and red clover leaves. Once microclover has been mowed it may grow back at only one-third its original size. Microclover has significantly fewer flowers than red or white clover and its growth is denser and more far-reaching than the red or white varieties.

Microclover looks more uniform than other varieties of clover found in lawns, especially after its flowers have been removed by mowing. It grows lower to the ground than its counterparts. The fact that all varieties of this plant tend to grow close together makes it easy to spot clover patches in your yard.

    Dig Clover Up By Hand

Spotted some clover in your plot? ‘Dig it out at a very early stage before the plant starts to send out runners,’ advises David. Try to get all the roots to stop it from growing back. It’s easiest to do this when the soil is moist.

This will get increasingly trickier to do the longer you leave it, as they grow large networks of stolons that can be very time-consuming to remove. In more invaded areas, you may just wish to remove whole areas of lawn and replace it with fresh turf. Our guide on how to lay turf will come in handy here, or you can simply repair the lawn patches with seed.

Can You Use Fertilizer To Kill Clover

You can kill white clover on your lawn using fertilizer. A well-fertilized turf prevents unwanted plants from growing and ensures your turfgrass gets proper nitrogen levels.

Organic fertilizers can work too. However, if the white clover has overrun your grass, consider standard fertilizer. The best examples to consider include:

If you prefer organic fertilizer, consider spreading some coffee grounds on your lawn. You can also use eggshells by adding them to your compost and then using the finished product as soil sediment or surface mulch.

Does Clover Belong In A Home Lawn

This is a frequently debated subject and passions run high on either side of the argument.

Without question, clover has certain benefits. Its green color matches many lawn grasses and it maintains that color even during the hottest days of summer when some grasses struggle and begin to fade. It is able to withstand dog urine, something that will kill virtually all desirable grasses. It can grow nearly anywhere outside of dense shade and requires little maintenance it rarely gets tall enough to mow, it can survive with very little water, and it actually prefers soils that arent fertilized.

However, clover also has certain downsides. It struggles under even moderate amounts of traffic. It will not survive in yards that are frequent playgrounds for kids and pets or home to sports played by adults. When it is played on it tends to stain clothing easily and its stains can be difficult to remove.

Ultimately it is best to go in one direction or the other. Either grow a microclover dominated lawn microclovers being a superior subtype of common white clover or grow one dominated by grass.

    #6 Mow Your Lawn High

While this is part of a proper lawn care regime, it is also effective in removing clover from your yard. Clover naturally grows low to the ground with a shallow root system. If you raise the blade height on your mower deck to at least 3 inches tall when mowing and leave it there for a handful of cuttings, the taller turfgrass will block the sun from reaching the low-growing clover. Without sunlight, the clover will die.

#7 Pull the Clover Out By Hand

Pulling plants by hand is a tried-and-true option that stops clover from spreading throughout your yard. As soon as you notice small clumps, loosen the ground around the base of the plant with your fingers or garden spade, and then pull the plant out, making sure to get the entire root system.

If its hard to pull, try watering thoroughly beforehand to help loosen the clover roots.

#8 Deprive It of Oxygen and Sunlight

If you have large patches you need to get rid of, one of the most effective ways to do this naturally is to deprive the entire patch of sunlight and oxygen. Place plastic sheeting or a garbage bag on top of the clover, securing the corners into the ground, so it doesnt blow away. In a few weeks, everything that was once growing in that spot should be smothered out and dead.

Improve The Quality Of Your Turf

The most important factor in learning how to get rid of lawn weeds of all kinds is to ensure your grass is healthy. As David Hedges Gower, the founder of the Lawn Association says, clover is normally a sign of a poorly maintained lawn. For instance, it particularly thrives in nitrogen-poor ground.

There are, however, some simple steps you can take to improve the conditions of your turf and the soil beneath.

David says to start by looking at your soil. ‘Check the pH and see if it’s suitable to be growing grass,’ he says. In most cases, the optimal level is between 6.0 and 7.0. Soil that is too acidic can make it difficult for grass to grow, and easier for some types of clover. It can be balanced with soil amendments, such as lime.

Also, ‘check your compaction levels,’ says David. ‘Clover often does well in poor soils that are very compacted, so start to hollow tine aerate your lawn at least once a year.’

What’s more, if you’re creating a new lawn by planting grass seed, and want to reduce the risk of clover invading it, ensure you pick a good species that is weed-free. It’s worth paying extra for a better quality mix.

‘Feed the lawn using a high-quality lawn feed to further enhance the grass,’ he adds. You can find more spring lawn care tips and autumn lawn care tips in our guides.
