Overseeding Is Always A Good Option

Best grass seed? what are ELITE grass seeds

Make sure you choose the right seed for your climate.

Water and fertilize adequately, and be sure to mow once your seed has grown high enough to do so.

Many homeowners search for the best grass seed for overseeding. But the truth is that what you do to prepare for overseeding, and after you spread the seed will usually play the biggest role in how your new grass seed performs.

Can You Use Too Much Grass Seed

Guidance on optimal seeding rates can be found on quality grass seed labels. Dont try to cut corners. Too much grass seed causes undue competition for resources such as light, water and nutrients, and grass seedlings are more susceptible to disease and insect damage. Too little seed can also lead to poor germination rates, which in turn can affect the quality of your plants.

If youre not sure how much seed to use, check the label to make sure the recommended amount of seed per plant is being used. For example, if your recommended seed amount is 1/2 cup, but you only have 1 cup of seeds on hand, you may want to consider using less seed or using a different seed mix.

What Is The Best Way To Plant Grass Seed In The Fall

Late summer and early fall is the prime time for planting cool-season grasses like Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, and fescue. Soil temperatures are warm and nights are cool which encourages quick germination and rabid establishment. Fall also happens to be the beginning of the wetter season throughout much of the United States, and soil moisture levels are near perfect. However, fall is not a good time for planting warm-season grasses like bermudagrass, buffalograss, zoysia grass, or bahia. Wait until late spring for these types of grasses.

Step 1 Prepare the area by killing off and/or removing the old lawn or existing vegetation. This can be accomplished using a tiller, sod cutter, or with a glyphosate herbicide. If you use a tiller or sod cutter, break up any soil clumps and rake the area smooth. If you use glyphosate, wait 2-3 weeks and then remove the dead vegetation. Scalping the area with a string trimmer or lawnmower on the lowest setting does this nicely. Follow this up with a vigorous raking to loosen and smooth out the soil.

Step 2 Sow the seed using a seed spreader. Hand sowing can work for smaller areas, but larger areas should be planted with a mechanical spreader. Follow the spreader manufactures recommended settings for the type of seed youre using. Most manufactures list their settings on their websites.

Step 3 After sowing the seed work it into the soil by raking lightly or by pressing it into the soil using a lawn roller.

10 Best Grass Seed Reviews

There are a few things to consider before you seed bermuda. First confirm your USDA growing zone is within zones 7-10 to accommodate bermudas growing needs. Bermuda also needs a lot of sun, at minimum of 6 hours a day.

Bermuda is not too picky about soil types or ph levels which in-turn aids its resilient nature. When seeding bermuda you want to prepare a good seedbed. Make sure the top layer of soil is not overly compacted and is broken-up an inch or two.

How To Choose The Right Grass Seed For Your Region

Establishing lush, healthy, beautiful lawn grasses demands diligence. Proper maintenance, mowing and nutrition all lead to achieving your goals but success also rests on the grass itself. Whether establishing a new lawn or maintaining an existing one, matching the best cool- or warm-season grasses to your growing region is critical. Choosing the Pennington grass seed that’s suited to your location and goals will help you achieve desired results.

Cool-season grasses yield vigorous growth in northern regions with cool spring and fall seasons, and moderate summers. Warm-season grasses flourish in southern regions where seasonal summer temperatures run high. They thrive on summer heat, but can’t withstand northern winters. By choosing premium lawn grasses designed specifically for regional factors such as humidity, aridity and elevation, you ensure your lawn has every advantage for success:

How To Plant Grass Seed On Hard Dirt

Trying to plant grass seed on hard, compacted soil is challenging. Whatever you do, dont bring in topsoil and spread it over the hard soil. While it may look like the problem is solved and your grass will even germinate and start to establish, that compacted layer will play havoc with the drainage, root development, and overall vigor of your grass later. However, if you can bring in enough new soil to bury the compacted soil at least 2-3 feet deep than this idea can work, but that much soil over a large area is usually not practical.

The best solution is to incorporate organic matter into the compacted soil at a depth of at least 6 inches, deeper if possible. Organic matter can include compost, lawn clippings, shredded leaves, aged manure, etc. Tilling is often the only way to incorporate this matter into the soil. Make sure the soil isnt wet or it could do more harm than good. However, a slightly moist soil will make for easier tilling than bone dry soil will. In the future having the area core-aerated yearly will help avoid more compaction.

How Long Does Grass Seed Take To Grow

Under perfect conditions such as a lot of sunlight, but not overly hot temperatures, and plenty of rain, grass seed can take between one and three weeks to germinate. If conditions are not as perfect as youd like, and they often arent, you will probably have to wait longer to see results.

So, just because your grass seed isnt rewarding you with a velvety green carpet after a month, dont fret, sometimes it takes a while for things to get going. The worst thing you can do is think you need to add more seed as sowing too much in a given area will have adverse effects.

As mentioned though, in absolutely ideal conditions, you can expect to see results in as little as a week, as this strangely satisfying time-lapse video shows:

What Is The Best Grass Seed For Shade

How to Choose the Best Grass Seed

Most grasses prefer full-sun , and some grasses can handle part-sun . But for areas that receive 2-4 hours a day, fine fescue is the best choice for northern climates. Unfortunately, if you have an area that receives less than 2 hours of sunlight a day you might need to consider a different type of groundcover.

For shady areas in the southern half of the United States your options are very limited. Warm-season grasses perform best in these southern areas, but warm-season grasses are also known for being intolerant of shade. Some varieties of zoysia can tolerant part-sun conditions, but the most shade-tolerant warm-season grass is St. Augustine . St. Augustine grass has some drawbacks however, so be sure to do your homework before considering this type of lawn.

  • Germination rate is the percentage of pure seed that is viable and will grow.
  • The origin where the seed was produced. Oregon’s ideal weather conditions for seed production of cool-season grasses makes it a large producer of quality grass seed.
  • Name and address of seller or supplier

Other crop seeds

  • Inert matter including chaff, soil, and debris. This value should be as low as possible. Inert matter is contained in the bag but doesn’t actually grow.
  • Percentage by weight of other agriculture crop seeds or undesirable grass seed. This number should be between zero and 0.5%. Avoid purchasing seed that contains Lolium multiforum , also called Italian ryegrass. This annual grass is found in inexpensive grass seed, only lives for one year, and makes it difficult for the desired grass species to become established.
  • Percentage by weight of weed seed. This number should be close to 0.00%.
  • Avoid purchasing seed that lists a percentage of noxious weeds.

Choosing The Best Grass Seed In Cincinnati Dayton Ohio Or Northern Kentucky

There are a lot of misconceptions about grass seed that can make the buying process a challenge. One major misunderstanding is the idea that every seed type is more or less the same, leading some homeowners to be fooled into choosing a product that has a fancy or appealing label or a brand name they recognize. Sometimes people also get fixated on certain advertising gimmicks. For example, they might pick a type that claims to have fast germination. But this is a common marketing ploy and it may turn out that what is growing quickly is a grass you do not desire in your yard.

The truth is that there are many differences among grass seed species. Dont be misled by labels, brand appeal, or other irrelevant details. At the store, take the time to read the label. You may be surprised to see that it provides the percentage of how much of the content consists of weeds and nuisance grasses . The seed purchased in big box stores is simply not going to be of the same high quality as that which is used by a reputable landscape professional.

What Is The Best Fertilizer To Use On New Grass Seed

A lush lawn is an exciting prospect when youre thinking about replanting your yard. You want the grass to grow in as thick and green as possible. You want to know which type of fertilizer will do the job the best.

For newly planted grass seed, a starter fertilizer will work best for those early growth stages. As the grass grows, you can move on to stronger, normal-use fertilizers, but those wont provide the proper nutrients for a budding lawn.

Compost is always an excellent fertilizing option, but again, the balance of nutrients for a new lawn might not be enough to ensure firm establishment and full coverage.

8 Best Grass Seeds [Reviews for 2020]

Its very important to recognize that choosing grass seed is much more complex than just heading to the nearest box store and picking up a bag of seed. If youve been to a big box store and looked at seed, you already know there are an overwhelming number of types and brands of seeds.

A poor choice could leave you with more hassle than you started with. Thats because some seed blends contain filler . In addition, some turf types dont work well in our region and yet they are still available to buy around here.

We understand how confusing these options can be for you.

But purchasing high-quality grass seed is really important. You dont want to end up with weeds in your lawn due to using a low-quality product that has weed seeds mixed in. When homeowners see one or two bare spots in their yard, sometimes the inclination is just to grab a bag of seed and quickly take care of it themselves. But this really could do more harm than good by introducing unwanted weeds into your yard that will only spread.

Unfortunately, the grass seed purchased in big box stores is simply not going to be of the same high quality as that which is used by a reputable landscape professional.

Even professionals get what they pay for. And the products available to them vary in price and quality as well.

Starting A New Lawn In Clay Soil

Clay soil does a fine job retaining water and nutrients. However, if the clay becomes compacted by heavy rain or footprints, the ground wont provide enough space or nutrition for grass roots to thrive. Here are a few tips for growing a beautiful new lawn on clay soil:

  • Amend the clay soil by working 10-15 cm of organic matter into the top 30 cm of soil.
  • You can also apply gypsum with a spreader to loosen up compacted clay.
  • Add organic matter to your lawn every year to make sure it gets the nutrients it needs.
  • Aerate your clay-soil lawn every year, too, to improve the circulation of air and water.

Looking For Low Maintenance

Like to admire a lush, green lawn while lounging on the back patio, but dont want to spend a lot of time getting it that way? Look for a seed mix promoting itself as a low maintenance option, typically branded as such because it grows slowly and requires little fertilizer.

In the North, that means a general grass seed mix with at least 30 percent fine fescue the secret ingredient to a take-it-easy northern lawn and probably also some Kentucky bluegrass, such as Scotts Turf Builder Quality All-Purpose Mix. In the South, you cant go wrong with bahiagrass such as Scotts Turf Builder Pensacola Bahiagrass Seed.

Best Grass Seed For Cool

Fix an Ugly Lawn with Overseeding // Complete Step by Step Guide For Beginners

Cool-season grasses grow in areas that experience frigid winters and hot summers, but they grow best when daytime highs are between 60 and 75 F. In the North, they typically grow best in spring, early summer, and fall. In the southern extent of their range, they grow best in fall, winter, and spring. Cool-season grasses include Kentucky bluegrass, fine fescue, tall fescue, and perennial ryegrass. These grasses are often blended for different purposes, such as shade tolerance or high-traffic areas. Sun and shade blends are the most popular.

  • Kentucky bluegrass is the only rhizome-spreading cool-season grass, which allows it to self-heal when damaged. The others are bunching or clumping grasses that must be reseeded when damaged.
  • Perennial ryegrass excels in high foot-traffic areas, but it is moderately tolerant of other adverse conditions like drought, shade, and temperature extremes.
  • Fine fescues are the most shade and cold-tolerant of the group.
  • Tall fescue is the most heat and drought tolerant, which makes it the most popular of the cool-season grasses in the overlap zone with warm-season grasses.

What To Do With Your Existing Lawn

You have two choices when planting a new lawn: overseed your existing lawn or till the grass and soil to plant anew. When you overseed your lawn, you simply spread grass seed and starter fertilizer over the existing yard.

Some people like this option to reinforce the existing lawn, but sometimes the grass system is older or strained and could use total replacement.

When you till over the lawn to expose the soil for new planting, youre actually taking a step to fertilize the soil before adding any supplementary fertilizer. All of the nutrients grass needs to grow will be present in the blades, roots, and other organic material that will decompose into the soil, known as green mulching.

Still, it will be helpful to add starter fertilizer to make sure the seeds get the proper nutrient amounts, especially phosphorus, for root growth.
