Cub Cadet Ultima Zt1 Zero Turn Riding Lawn Mower

TOP 5 Zero Turn Mowers for $3000 | 2022

When it comes to zero-turn mowers, its hard to look past Cub Cadet, and they have developed some truly excellent machines over the past few years. This is another outstanding example especially considering the price and the fact that its an award-winning design.

The Ultima ZT1 has a 42-inch deck backed with a 22 HP V-Twin gas engine, all housed in a 2×2 continuous steel frame for unbeatable durability and strength.

Ideal for yards with slightly rolling hills, at 7.5 MPH its one of the faster mowers in this class, with hydrostatic, rear-wheel transmission for a super-smooth riding experience. A foot-operated deck height system provides 15 cutting options, ensuring you can get the perfect finish to your lawn every time.

Pros

  • None to speak of.

I honestly couldnt find anything I didnt like about this mower, and the reviews alone speak for themselves. Perhaps this is actually the best zero-turn mower under $3000 after all?

Ryobi Electric Riding Zero Turn Mower

Battery-operated zero-turn mowers are just starting to improve their technology, but for the most part they largely remain on the more expensive side of the scale. That solidifies just how awesome this machine is from Ryobi, considering the price point.

It seems theres no limit to what the cordless tool stalwarts can do, with a 75 Ah battery that can cut an astonishing 2.5 acres on a single charge. Considering there isnt one gas-powered zero-turn mower that is fully carb compliant I think its time we made the switch.

A wealth of features are included, with four brushless motors, a fully electronic onboard control panel, 12 position deck height lever, and all in a 12-gauge steel housing to withstand anything you throw at it. And with a maximum speed of seven miles per hour it easily competes with the gas counterparts and then some.

Pros

  • Bagging and mulching kit sold separately.

This is an outstanding zero-turn mower for more reasons than its just environmentally friendly. Take a bow, Ryobi and theres even a USB port, so you can listen to your tunes while youre cutting the grass. Embrace the future, people because its already here.

What Exactly Is A Zero

In simple words, we can define a zero-turn mower as a type of mower with a riding style and has a turning radius that is estimated to have zero effect. There are multiple designs and types of zero-turn mowers, and some are pretty cheap. Yes, the zero-turn mowers are quite expensive, but some models are sold at affordable rates.

Guide To Zero Turn Mowers

Zero Turn Ride On Lawn Mowers are a serious investment, so some of the most important considerations are, sadly, the most boring: buying the best mower brands warranties maintenance costs.

Also, they will need regular servicing for safety, and to prolong their life, so consider how easy it is to find a dealership, or local mechanic who knows what theyre doing.

Most Zero Turn Mower buyers will be professional landscapers, but there are some smaller mowers by brands like Cub Cadet. Cub Cadet Zero Turn Mowers are some of the best, and easiest to store too, so are a decent choice for commercial and domestic gardeners alike.

But John Deere and Kubota Zero Turn Mowers have a great range too, so whatever your reason for needing these grass care beasts, there will definitely be something to suit your space, and your budget.

If you have a home with less than a 1/2-an acre of lawn, then you only need a regular push-along mower to cut your grass. If you have a yard thats over 2-acres, you can consider buying a zero-turn mower. Otherwise, going to the expense of buying one of these machines isnt necessary for a small yard.

What Is A Zero Turn Mower

A zero turn mower is a lawn mower with a mowing deck that is in front of the mower, rather than underneath it.

Its called a zero turn mower because its turn radius is zero, which means that the mower can pivot on its back wheels to turn much more quickly than other types of mowers.

Most zero turn mowers have four wheels, with two swiveling tires in the front and two large drive tires in the back. The wheels operate independently of one another, and the mower usually doesnt feature a steering wheel. Instead, they usually have two levers that connect to the rear wheels motors.

If you push both levers forward, the mower moves forward. If you pull them back, the mower moves in reverse.

For a right turn, you push the left level forward and leave the right lever alone. For a left turn, you push the right lever forward and leave the left lever alone.

Ive reviewed 13 top value mowers and found the best zero turn mower under 3000. Theres no need to spend a lot of money on the best zero turn mower! The mowers in this 2022 review are all great value, but there are definitely some standouts.

Since first publishing this review last year, the prices for zero turn mowers have gone through the roof. It is, unfortunately, almost impossible to find one under $3000!

Our winner, the Cub Cadet ZT1 54, is now just shy of $3500. Thats still great value, dont get me wrong, it just doesnt quite fit the under 3000 bill.

Husqvarnas Z254 isnt available anymore and their newer models, the Z254F and the Z248F , are much more expensive than $3000.

Bad Boys MZ42 is now $3299, not bad value you get a whole lot of mower for that. However, for another $250 or so I recommend you go for the Cub instead.

Despite the changing prices, Ive left our winners technical details and why I think theyre the best cheap zero turn mowers listed below.

If you dont want to read right through the tech specs, heres a summary of my recommendations:

Both of these mowers are maneuverable and easy to store, but the Bad Boy came out on top because of its exceptional deck construction.

How To Use A Zero Turn Mower

TOP 5 zero-turn MOWERS under $5,000 in 2021

Youll be used to seeing zero turn mowers storming across golf courses and playing fields as they drive much faster than conventional ride on mowers, with more manoeuvrability and usually faster cutting speeds.

Every mower has slightly unique operations to that brand, but for all zero turn mowers, the controls are placed behind the cutting blades, so youll need a little bit of practice if moving from a conventional lawn tractor to a zero turn mower. Here is more on how to operate a zero turn mower.

The two steering levers give instinctive turning when you get used to them. To steer, think of it like steering a trolley rather than a car.

To move forward, push the levers forward, and to steer to the right, push forward with your left hand, or right hand forward for left turning. To break, pull back on the steering levers.

Theres not much more to it, but it takes a little getting used to and the steering can be pretty sensitive.

Why Should I Prefer Zero Turn Lawn Mower Over A Lawn Tractor

We all want to save time, and everyone is switching to technology that is quick and reliable in performance. Zero-turn lawn mowers are suitable when you want to wind up the work as soon as possible. Lawn tractors are not appropriate for small gardens as they are slow and take time to reach the point where cutting is required. Lawn tractors have fewer features as compared to the mowers with zero turns.

Mowing Slopes With Zero Turn Mowers

There are a few tips to keep in mind when mowing slopes. You should control your speed with the transmission instead of relying on the brakes.

Its best to go slow, especially if youre not familiar with the terrain. Its safer to mow up and down slopes rather than to drive parallel to them. You should also watch out for bumps and holes.

    Fuel Capacity And Transmission

Mowers with a large fuel capacity will cut for longer without refueling. On the other hand, a smaller fuel capacity will need constant refueling. With the latter, you could get stuck in the middle of a job when the gas runs out.

Transmission is also vital because it determines the mowers maneuverability.

What To Look For In A Zero Turn Mower

Lets unpack everything you need to know about your prospective zero-turn mower, allowing you to make an informed purchase decision.

How Do You Winterize A Zero

BUYERS GUIDE | Choosing the Best Zero Turn Mower / Lawn Mower

When its time to winterize your zero-turn lawn mower, there are a few things that are necessary to make sure the machine is ready to use when spring arrives.

First, give the mower a good cleaning from top to bottom. Use a mild soap and wash it thoroughly, Quinn says. Make sure you get around the mower engine and especially the mower deck, cleaning out all the clumps of grass so that no rust can build up. Then, fill up the fuel tank completely and add a fuel stabilizer. Nothing is more detrimental to a carburetor than ethanol fuel during storage, Quinn says. The fuel attracts water and can cause damage to your fuel system over time.

The next step is catering to the tires. Fill them up with air to the recommended pressure since flat tires can cause cracks in the rubber that can be costly later. To keep the battery in good condition, charge it up or use a trickle charger to maintain it while in storage. Finally, Quinn advises that this is also a good time to have your blades sharpened. While you could wait to change the oil filter, air filter, and spark plugs just before the spring season, Quinn says that this can be done for the winter also.

How Did We Choose These Zero

I chose a variety of cutting deck widths, engine sizes, and fuel tank capacities to curate a list of zero-turn mowers that will suit just about any larger suburban or rural property.

I also picked models that had quality-of-life features like seat suspension systems and ergonomic steering bars for added comfort while mowing and even USB ports for keeping your phone charged while you work.

Different Types Of Zero Turn Mowers

While all zero-turn mowers have design and construction for mowing large lawns, some models are more robust than others.

For instance, if youre a contractor thats mowing large estates or golf courses every day, youll have different needs to a landscaper that only has one or two large lawns to mow each week.
