Once you have completed steps one through four you can apply a pre-emergent herbicide like Preen to keep weed seeds from germinating in the mulch that youve applied. Thats what Preen does. It casts a vapor guard over the surface to which it is applied and as soon as a weed seed germinates it nips it in the bud. Literally.
Most people have poor success with a product like Preen because they fail to properly prepare the flower beds before they use the product. If you do the preperation as described above the beds should stay weed free for weeks. If you want to use Preen it might be better to wait a few weeks then apply it. It only works for a few weeks once applied, probably no more than 12 weeks, so if you wait a few weeks before applying it that will buy you more time into the season.

Unfortunately, none of these methods will get rid of bindweed. And, if each may damage your garden soil, flora and fauna instead.

- And salt or salt water will just add problems to your soil.

Dig Out Small Morning Glory Patches
You dont have to treat all bindweed infestations with kid gloves. Isolated and small patches of new plants growing on the gardens borders or away from garden plants can and should come out as soon as you encounter them.
Mowing can control above-soil growth on your lawn, too. Bindweed root systems are stubborn, though, so make sure to remove all rhizomes as well.
Use a shovel or trowel to dig around the borders of the weed patch. Dig under the root system, which can extend as far as ten feet below the surface.
Avoid composting the bindweed, as this can result in further infestations. Instead, double-bag the weeds in trash bags, seal the bags with tape and throw them away.

Controlling Bindweed With Aggressive Plantings
For as stubborn as bindweed can be, it has a very hard time competing with other aggressive plants. Often, bindweed can be found in poor soil where few other plants can grow. Improving the soil and adding plants that spread densely will force the bindweed out of the bed.
If you have bindweed in your lawn, dethatch the lawn and apply fertilizer to help your lawn grow more compactly, which then makes it far more difficult for bindweed to grow.

Steam Morning Glory Seedlings & Plants
Whatever you do, do not pull morning glories up from the roots. This will make the tiny plant rhizomes underground create more “tentacles” and spread roots underground wildly, up to 20 ft. or more away. These guidelines can be similarly applied to field bindweed.
Although some gardeners choose to use flame torch methods to burn weeds, I found steaming them to be much safer and environmentally friendly. There are no fumes or fire hazards with steaming. I used the PurSteam household steamer rather than a garden steamer because the water tank size was much larger, and allowed me to steam the weeds for a long 45 minutes before having to refill the tank at the water tap.
The purpose of steaming the weeds is to kill them not only above the ground but to eradicate them through heat where they vigorously spread below ground through rhizomes. This was especially easy with PurSteam because the unit is height-adjustable with a long hose and allowed the nozzle to reach multiple angles and awkward, hard to reach areas of my garden, including below my deck.
Although there are garden steamers on the market, such as DynaSteam, it did not help me much because it only allowed for straight line steaming, though some people find this model suits their needs. You can also try the highly rated Bernzomatic 19425 Garden Torch if you prefer the weed burning method.
Process
If you have local deer or goats around you can pile up the cut vines for them for a healthy snack.
Sow Idealized Plants In Problem Areas
In Plant Beds:
Most gardeners still want greenery in the plant beds where they took morning glory down. If this is your wish, the best solution is to plant small to mature bushes and shrubs in the same area. This is because bushes and shrubs have deeper root systems that are already thriving. They do not have to compete with morning glory to grow or stay alive, as newly sown seeds or smaller plants would. My husband and I chose orange rocket barberry shrubs. Your local garden center will have an array of shrubs native to your area that will thrive in the soil on your property.
On Lawns:
- Pinch the heads off any existing morning glory plants so the sun is not able to provide much energy for photosynthesis and growth through the double-lobed leaf heads.
- You can then reseed or overseed any sparse areas of your lawn with grass seed in early spring or early fall when it is not too hot.
- Cover this grass seed with about a 1/4-inch of compost. The key is to have the grass seed germinate and fill the lawn before the morning glory-friendly warmer temperatures come along and invade more of the soil space.

Spray The Bindweed With A Weed Killer
Now that youre training the remaining weeds in your garden to grow up isolated poles, its time for chemical control. A glyphosate weedkiller such as Roundup is ideal for killing off common weeds such as crabgrass, arrowhead, and bindweed and is also one of the best poison ivy killer spray options around.
A few applications of weed killer usually destroy the surface weeds and even extend into the bindweed roots to wipe them out, too. This method is the best option for large areas with lots of weeds.
- Roundup or a similar glyphosate spray
Don your safety gear, and fill the sprayer with weed killer. Glyphosate kills garden plants as readily as weeds, so only spray bindweed leaves that are isolated away from other plants.
Wait a week, and respray. Wait another two weeks to let the roots die. Once the bindweed is brown and dead, its safe to remove them and dig out the roots. Use on kudzu to end up with dead kudzu vines that you can remove easily, as well.
You can also make your own weed killer with salt, vinegar, and dish soap. Mix the ingredients for killing thistle with vinegar or to get rid of bindweed, poison ivy, kudzu, and other plants that threaten to take over your yard.

What Does Morning Glory Weed Look Like
To identify Morning Glory Weed , look for small, alternating, arrow-head shaped leaves with lobes at the base and pointed tips. Invasive Morning Glory vine will grow prostrate on the ground unless offered a support of some kind, so youll frequently find tentacle-like vines of Morning Glory Weed stretching from tangled mats of itself in search of structures to climb. When stems are broken, they tend to leak a milky sap.
Trumpet-shaped, white or pink flowers about an inch in diameter bloom each summer and are similar looking to true Morning Glory flowers. Two tiny bracts usually appear on each flowers stem.
How Do You Steam Morning Glories
- You may want to steam the Morning Glory vine. You can use garment steamers to achieve this. There are garden steamers too. By steaming the vine youll not only kill the foliage but also the roots.
- Wait for a day and trim the vine near the roots to get rid of it for good.
- Dont pull out the Morning Glory vine in hopes of killing it. If you pull the vine out, itll only grow thicker and spread more roots.
Tip: Plant bushes and shrubs in this area. Take good care of them until they establish themselves.
