Welcome To The Lawn: How to Water Your Lawn

Doreen Jansen looked at the brown hills from her Thousand Oaks home.

âMy plants are suffering,â Jansen said. âThe animals, coyotes, rattlesnakes they are all out in droves. Itâs dry and unusually hot.â

The signs of drought are everywhere here, from the shrinking lakes to the deathly drained color of trees and earth. Jansen decided to rip out her grass and put in arid plants.

Sheâs not alone. The megadrought affecting the American West has been record-breaking, with no tangible relief in sight. Itâs forcing cities to crack down on lawn-watering, and paying residents to replace their lawns with drought-resistant plants.

What Is The Goal

  • The DWP opted not to scale back to one-day-a-week watering rules. Instead, it will focus on staying at or below a monthly volumetric allocation, officials said.
  • The rules will apply to everyone in the DWPs coverage area not just those that are dependent on State Water Project supplies, which have been hit hard by the drought.
  • DWP officials said their customers are already averaging about 112 gallons per person per day, less than half that of some other nearby agencies. The combination of two-day-a-week watering across the entire service area, enhanced conservation efforts and other local supplies means they can cap residents at about 105 gallons per person per day and still stay within the MWDs allotment.

When Should Sprinklers Be Turned On

Save water and maintain a gorgeous green lawn with Celebrity Greens ...

Depending on the weather conditions and your individual watering needs, your sprinkler system will be opened for the season. The system should not be opened until the threat of frost has passed. We recommend waiting to open your system until after the first frost of the year if you are an early planter.

If you do not have a sprinkling system, you can use a garden hose to water your plants. This is a great way to get the water to the plants and keep them watered throughout the growing season.

How To Water Your Lawn WITHOUT an Irrigation System

For LADWP customers in L.A., residents will be able to water their yards only two days per week starting Wednesday.

Customers with street addresses ending in odd numbers may water only on Mondays and Fridays, and customers with even-numbered street addresses may water on Thursdays and Sundays.

New Restrictions On Outdoor Watering Take Effect For Los Angeles Residents Amid Drought

People in the city of Los Angeles will be limited to two-day per week outdoor watering schedules based on street addresses as part of an effort to conserve water amid a historic drought.

LOS ANGELES — People in Los Angeles will be limited to two-day per week outdoor watering schedules starting Wednesday based on street addresses as part of an effort to conserve water amid a historic drought.

The restrictions, approved by a 13-0 City Council vote after being announced by Mayor Eric Garcetti, are more lenient than the one-day limit ordered earlier by the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California for areas that are dependent on water from the State Water Project.

Effective Wednesday, outdoor watering is restricted to two days per week, down from the current three, with watering permitted at odd-numbered street addresses on Mondays and Fridays, and at even-numbered addresses on Thursdays and Sundays.

Watering with sprinklers will be limited to eight minutes per station. Sprinklers with water-conserving nozzles will be limited to 15 minutes per station. All watering will have to be done in the evening or early morning, with no watering permitted outdoors between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.

The city also urged residents with pools to use pool covers to reduce the risk of evaporation, and called on people to wash their vehicles only at commercial car wash facilities.

La Limiting Outdoor Watering To Two Days Per Week Beginning In June

Fighting the Drought in California

As the region contends with a historic drought, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti Tuesday announced Tuesday that outdoor watering will be restricted to two days per week beginning next month.

Speaking in the front yard of an Eagle Rock home with a drought-tolerant landscape, Garcetti announced that beginning June 1, outdoor watering will be limited to two days per week for L.A. Department of Water and Power customers, down from the current restriction of three days.

“It’s actually less strict than what other neighboring water districts are moving towards, where they’re going to just one day a week,” Garcetti said. “Angelenos have done more. In the city of Los Angeles we’ve done more, so we don’t have to see a risk of plants dying or going to one day a week because of all the things we are doing collectively and have done.”

Last month, the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California starting June 1. MWD is Southern California’s largest water provider.

However, LADWP has chosen to go with two outdoor watering days instead of one, it says, because of effective water conservation efforts going back to the disco era in the 1970s.

“That has continued to drop our water demand every single year since then, to the point to where we are a very, very sustainable city, one of the lowest water-using cities per person in the state of California,” LADWP General Manager Marty Adams said Tuesday.

How Much Water Can You Use

There are some parts of the world where you can put as much water on your yard as youd like. Thats not the situation in California. The entire state is always conscious of a potential water shortage. Its something state and local lawmakers would like to avoid. Many places have limited the amount of water, the times, and even the places, you can water your California lawn.

It would be easy if you knew you could only water your lawn for an hour on odd days of the calendar month. That would be straightforward and easy to adhere to. The problem is that its not that straightforward. Each township/city has their own lawn watering rules. Further complicating the situation is that the rules can change from week to week depending on how much rain the area has received.

The best way to make sure youre not accidentally violating one of the rules, its in your best interest to frequently check local government websites where any alterations to local ordinances about lawn watering will be listed. Violating the ordinances and overwatering your lawn will likely result in a citation and youll have to pay a fine.
