What Causes Lawn Mower Lights Not Working

How Does A Lawn Mower Work? Lawn Equipment Repair Tips

Lawn mowers with headlights make it easier to mow at night or in low light conditions, and they also provide more visibility. Headlights that dont work can put you and others in danger.

Knowing the causes of this issue would undoubtedly assist in its solution.

If your lawnmowers headlights arent working, it might be due to faulty sockets, bulbs, switches, or weak wire connections at the connectors and harness.

Is It Worth Repairing A Lawn Mower

To determine if it’s better to repair or replace your lawn mower, consider the following:

  • How much will it cost to repair vs. replace your mower?
  • Does your lawn mower break down frequently?
  • Is your lawn mower more than 10 years old?

If it’s expensive to fix your broken engine or transmission, buying a brand new lawn mower may be a better investment. And if it’s old and requires constant repairs, it’s probably time to consider purchasing a newer model.

Don’t hesitate to ask your repair technician if they recommend you repair or replace your lawn mow

Designed For Efficiency And Effectiveness

Some models of Worx cordless lawn mowers feature fully collapsible handles so they can be easily stored in small spaces. Comfortable padded grips help you get the job done easily with reduced fatigue. If you stay on top of mowing your lawn frequently, you can let the grass clippings work their way down into your lawn and feed the grass the nutrients it needs to stay green and healthy. If you do less frequent mowing, use the handy bag to collect the grass trimmings for composting or mulching in your garden. Depending on the model, discharge bag capacity ranges from .85 bushels to 2 bushels.

If youve ever struggled with an old gas mower to adjust the mowing height with those levers on each wheel, you know how they become increasingly difficult to move as the mower ages. Youll love how easy it is to achieve six or seven different cutting heights ranging from 1.25 inches up to 4 inches with a single lever.

Our cordless, battery-powered mowers are also designed to be lightweight for maneuverability and are easy to push, ranging from just 29 pounds for our smallest model to only 68 pounds for our largest model.

You can also say goodbye to hauling gas cans around in your vehicle to buy gasoline, which is just one of the many inconveniences that have always made gas lawn mowers a pain in the neck. After all, why torture yourself with a gas lawn mower when you can get higher power without the mess and hassle?

How To Clean A Lawn Mower

A couple of times a year, give the mower a good cleaning.

  • With the gas tank empty, turn the mower on its side.
  • Remove any debris that may be wrapped around the blade or caked up on the underside of the mower deck.
  • Spray the underside of the mower deck with a garden hose to loosen dirt and dried-on grass.
  • Scrub the deck with a soft brush and soapy water. Then rinse off with a hose.
  • Dry the mower thoroughly before storing.

How Lawn Mowers Work

Once upon a time, lawns were green country pastures kept trim by the sheep and other animals that grazed them. Today, powerful tractors, robots and even hovercraft keep them neat and tidy, but most have one thing in common — a rotating blade powered by a motor.

Before the middle of the 20th century, lawn mowers were mostly reel mowers with a cylindrical blade that got all its power from the person pushing it. British engineer Edwin Bunning invented the first one in 1830, and the first lawn mower powered by an internal combustion engine became available in 1902. An electric version became available in 1926.

But a new type of lawn mower emerged after World War II, with the development of suburban housing and the larger lots that came with it. For these new lawns, the push mower just wouldn’t cut it.

As small engines became more powerful, a new type of lawn mower that could cut larger and longer swaths of grass became more popular. Instead of cutting grass like scissors cut paper as a reel mower does, the rotary mower spins a horizontal blade around fast enough to cut the grass as it hits it.

The blade sits within a casing called a , which keeps the grass and other objects from flying in all directions when struck. Typically, the deck rides on four wheels, with a motor sitting on top of it and a bag attached to it to collect the cut grass.

How Does A Lawn Mower Work

It follows three significant steps for working:

    1) When the user starts the engine, the intake valve first sucks air into the cylinder and then compresses it using a piston rod. Then, the spark plug generates a spark that ignites the compressed air/fuel mixture, producing a force that pushes down the piston rod.

    2) This falling movement of the crankcase is converted into a rotary motion using a flywheel and a blade attached to the flywheel shaft.

    3) When the user engages the drive lever, an outer gear set called transmission gives rotary motion to blades through internal gear, which runs on-the-spot direction changes. Sometimes, an electric starter is used instead of a pull cord mechanism.

    Change Lawn Mower Oil

To ensure it performs up to its maximum capacity, make sure you change lawn mower oil at regular intervals. Old oil that is black or contains debris should be drained and replaced. This will improve performance, reduce costly repairs and extend engine life of gas lawn mowers. A push mower has an oil capacity of 15 to 18 ounces. It should be changed either every 50 hours or annually, whichever comes first. A riding mower has an oil capacity of 48 to 64 ounces. It should be changed either every 100 hours or annually, whichever comes first.

    • Before changing the oil in the lawn mower, disconnect the spark plug.
    • Remove the drain plug underneath the mower and allow it to drain into an oil-safe container.
    • If the mower does not have a drain plug, use an oil extractor kit to remove oil from the compartment.
    • Add new small engine oil to the compartment up to the dipstick fill line. Oil formulated for small engines will keep your mower running at its best.
    • Be sure to recycle the old oil properly.

Leaner Greener And Cleaner Than Gas Mowers

Gas powered lawn mowers produce two kinds of pollution. First, theres the noise pollution from how loud they are, which can be really annoying for neighbors and family. Second, they produce a surprising amount of air pollution emissions.

Of particular concern is the carbon dioxide emissions that contribute to global warming and climate change. The EPA estimates that 54 million homeowners are mowing their lawns every weekend. Thats a lot of air pollution that can be avoided. How To Winterize A Mower

After your last mow at the end of the growing season, run until it is out of gas to empty the tank.

    • Leave the gas tank empty until spring.
    • With the gas tank empty, remove the oil fill cap and turn the mower over to drain the engine oil into a suitable container for recycling.
    • If your mower has an oil drain plug, use that instead of turning the mower on its side.
    • Refill the engine oil reservoir per your mower manufacturers recommendations and then replace the oil fill cap.
    • Store a mower in a dry, protected location such as a garden shed or garage. Never store it next to a water heater or furnace.

Tip: Some lawn mowers benefit from fogging the engine at the end of the season. This involves spraying a coating into the carburetor and spark plug housing to prevent water from entering over the winter.

Safety Guidelines While Using A Lawn Mower:

    Always wear safety glasses.

Start the lawnmower in an open space, never in a closed or semi-enclosed area .

Keep children and pets at least 50 ft away from the mower to avoid injury. Never allow them to ride on it or operate it.

Be aware of where you are mowing, and dont cut near trees, which could hide obstacles that can damage your blade or undercarriage. Also, be mindful of soft ground areas like ditches your blades may not be able to pull the machine out if stuck in these areas.

Finally, when backing up with a riding mower, always look behind you to know whats there when turning around in tight places.

Always wear long pants, boots, and gloves when operating a lawnmower. Avoid loose clothing that can become tangled in the lawnmowers blades or exhaust system. When operating a leaf blower or other power-vacuum equipment, wear goggles, hearing protection, and a dust mask for eye and respiratory protection.

If you have to cross gravel driveways, roads, etc., do so at right angles and never back up or change directions on them.

If possible, avoid areas with broken glass and nails as these things can damage your tires and cut your grass bag, which lets all those little pieces fall out into your yard, making it look messy after you cut it instead of lovely clean stripes from side to side.

Guide On How To Clean Lawn Mower:

    1. Remove the spark plug and remove it from the mower to prevent accidental starts.

    2. Check the air filter and replace it if necessary.

    3. Use a screwdriver and garden hose to clean the clippings under the deck, motor housing, etc. You can also take off some parts such as air filters or blades to make your job easier.

    4. Remove grass and plant debris from electric components such as wiring harnesses, solenoid switch, speed control lever, choke coil, and carburetor gaskets with a brush or worn-out toothbrush soaked in gasoline .

    5. Clean all metal parts with a wire brush to remove all corrosive materials.

    6. Put on rubber gloves and use a cloth soaked in an engine degreaser to wipe down all greasy surfaces such as the deck, mower housing, spark plug, wiring connectors, and carburetor. You can also soak some rags in an engine degreaser and leave them on the stains overnight to help loosen dirt and debris.

    7. After removing any oil or grease patches left by the rag, use engine degreaser solution or a prepared water mixture of automatic transmission fluid and water for final cleaning of plastic covers, wrappings, or hoses. Cover them with masking tape before spraying to prevent stripping paint from exposed metal parts.

Mower Stops Moving Or Loses Power

    Who Makes Greenworks Lawn Mowers?

If your mower suddenly stops moving during use but the motor is still running, a broken drive belt is probably the culprit. Drive belts transfer power from the motor to the wheels, allowing your machine to move. Eventually, these belts wear out and break. Your mower could also keep moving but gradually lose power, which is often a sign of a stretched belt. In both cases, your drive belt needs replacement. Buy a replacement belt the same length as the one youre replacing, then raise the mower deck to perform the repair.
