Do Mushrooms Indicate A Problem With My Lawn

Why Do I Have Mushrooms In My Lawn. Good or Bad?

The vast majority of mushrooms on a lawn do not indicate a problem, and are actually beneficial. They are just part of the natural ecology of the lawn. However, if the mushrooms that emerge are arranged in a distinct circle or arc then this is a rare situation when the presence of a particular fungus will adversely affect the lawn and will need treatment. This will indicate the presence of a fairy ring, caused by the Mycelium fungus in the soil. These can be fascinating to look at, but can be devastating to the look of the lawn. I will try to cover fairy rings in more detail in a later blog post.

Many other fungus in lawns enjoy damp, carbon-rich soil and therefore are only an indication of a problem with the lawn, such as a low pH, poor drainage or an excess of organic matter such as leaves or wood chip on the lawn. I can test your pH levels and advise if treatment is necessary.

Of these common species found on British lawns, very few are poisonous. Even fewer are toxic enough to cause death. Even so, if you are considering handling or eating any mushrooms that you find growing on your lawn, then be sure to verify that it is an edible species from at least two reliable field guides or from someone who is an expert in the subject. If you are at all unsure of what you have found, just leave it alone and it will disappear in time.

Why Mushrooms Grow In My Yard

Fungus is among us, but is there any cause for concern?

You may have noticed, usually the morning after a good rain, mushrooms popping up in your yard. Its like magic . But well pull back the curtain to shed a little light on mushrooms mysterious appearing act.

Mushrooms are the fruiting body of various fungi, though not all fungi make mushrooms. Just as different plants produce different fruits , different fungi produce different mushrooms.

Mushrooms are like the fruits or flowers of fungi, which bloom under the right environmental conditions.

When you see mushrooms blooming in your yard, its because fungi that have been living underground all along are responding to changes in temperature, light and water. Under the right conditions , the fungi obtain nutrients that allow them to grow and prepare for reproduction.

The resulting mushrooms, essentially fungal flowers, can release millions or even billions of microscopic spores into the air, which play a similar role to that of pollen for plants.

Curious about the types of mushrooms growing in your yard, or whether you should worry about your kids or pets eating toxic fungi? Great questions.

Why Are These Mushrooms Growing In My Lawn Now

The reason youll find these mushrooms in your lawn now is that its been dry for a long time and we finally got some rain, Farfaglia said.

Mushrooms need moisture, so we tend to see them in late July or early August after we get some rain. Normally, spring and fall are their most active times because thats when moisture is available.

The fungi will probably continue to grow into autumn and subside in November when we get colder, freezing temperatures.

I get them in my yard every year, he said. We had a large tree taken down four or five years ago. We had them grind the stump, but there is still some left in the ground.

And thats the second thing mushrooms need to grow: food.

Fungi cant make their own food the way green plants can, Farfaglia explained. Green plants use energy from the sun in a process called to make their own food. Fungi, like animals, must rely on other organisms for food. Fungi feed on old stumps, roots, wood chips anything decaying in the soil.

If you have mushrooms in your lawn, its likely there used to be a tree near that spot. Keep in mind, though, that tree roots can grow 25 feet or more away from the trunk, and you might find mushrooms quite a distance away.

My neighbor and I both had trees taken down, and the fungi developed where the trees had been.

Why did our reader find mushrooms growing in a sunny spot?

Some fungi grow in shade, but others can grow in sun. There are thousands and thousands of species of fungi, Farfaglia said.

Mushrooms and toadstools arent actually harmful to your lawn, in fact, they can be quite beneficial.

Its important to distinguish between fungi such as mushrooms and toadstools and fungal lawn diseases.

Fungal lawn diseases can damage the grass in your lawn whereas mushrooms and toadstools assist with the breakdown of organic matter in your lawn making the soil richer and full of nutrients.

The extensive root structure of mushrooms can also help the soil retain water good news in Australias often-dry conditions.

Killing Mushrooms With Baking Soda

Mix 2 tablespoons of baking soda for each gallon of water to make a simple fungicide to kill mushrooms in your yard. Like vinegar, baking soda can change the pH of your yard. Of course, you would have to use a lot of it for that but its good not to use too much.

Alternate between using baking soda sprays and vinegar sprays to kill mushrooms. The two will interact to keep the pH of the soil neutral. Of course, doing this adds salts to your yard which are also bad.

If you can, the best way to get rid of mushrooms is always to wait, let them consume whatever dead plant matter is there, then theyll leave when all the dead matter is gone making your soil and lawn healthier in the process.

Mushrooms Are A Sign Of Decaying Wood

Mushrooms are only prevalent in lawns when there is the presence of rotting wood. To get rid of the mushrooms you have to get rid of the decaying woody material.

To reduce mushrooms that are growing in a lawn may need to help introduce more leafy material into the soil. A good way to do this is to mulch the grass clippings to the soil. Bacteria-rich soils have more leafy-rich food present than woody-rich food. Fungi rich soils are more prevalent with lignin-based foods like tree leaves and decaying wood. If there is a neutral balance of bacteria and fungi in the soils then mushrooms will be less prevalent.

It is common to see mushrooms pop up when there have been periods of excess moisture, as this extra moisture can stimulate beneficial microbial activity. Mushrooms are not harmful to your lawn in fact they are almost always a good sign! They are a clear sign that the soil is healthy, and a healthy soils is what we want for promoting healthy lawns and strong trees. Most often the mushrooms will disappear almost as quickly as they appeared.

If you have mushrooms in your lawn you now know that they are hard at work decomposing woody organic matter in the soil.

To stop mushrooms from having another favorite spot, get a compost bin to keep everything contained. Leaving a heap of organic materials out in the open is an invitation to mushroom spores.

Its Not Just A Surface Problem

The problem with mushrooms is that they are just the fruiting bodies of a fungus network that has deep roots underneath. Just removing the mushrooms wont fix the established problem that lingers below the surface. Heres the process to fully eliminate them:

  • Carefully dig up the mushrooms with a garden spade. Wear a protective mask and gloves during this task.
  • Aerate the lawn and remove any decomposing materials or thatch that is limiting airflow in the soil. This will interrupt the growth pattern of the funguss hyphae mat.
  • Insert nitrogen-rich fertilizer to decay the carbon-rich organic materials that fungi love. This will slow or stop the growth.
  • Apply anti-fungal yard treatment if applicable.
  • Afterward, do what you can to keep the yard tidy, sunny, and dry. For example, mowing more frequently will keep your grass shorter. This prevents more moisture from accumulating and causing a haven for mushrooms.

What Should I Do About Mushrooms In My Lawn

Its pretty hard to do anything to prevent mushrooms from growing in your lawn there arent any fungicides to deter them, Farfaglia said.

Any home remedies that you might read about are probably not effective, he said.

For the hard, leathery kind, you can dig them up. For fragile fungi, you can use a leaf rake to destroy them.

This may scatter spores to some degree, he said, so try to do this when the mushroom is just coming out of the ground, before it is fully mature. When the cap is changing color and starts to deteriorate, it is releasing spores.

If you irrigate your lawn, you may encourage their growth, so you can stop watering your grass.

Or you can just live with them until conditions change, Farfaglia said.

When their food source is used up, they will go away.
