Should You Water Grass After Mowing

Should I use weed and feed on my lawn?

It is recommended to water the grass after mowing it, however this should only be done if the grass actually need the water. If you walk across the lawn and your tracks are visible after you have left, the grass needs to be watered. If the soil is already damp, then adding more water will simply serve to exacerbate the situation. When it comes to protecting plants against fungal and bacterial infections, the ideal time to water is first thing in the morning.

Why It Helps Lawns

The reason it helps lawns is because the high amount of nitrogen content feeds the grass to make it grow faster and look greener. The pesticide in the product kills weeds but not lawns. If it claims to kill moss, the Its also highly likely that it contains iron which is again is suppressive to moss but not lawns.

How Often Do You Have To Wait Between Fertilizer Applications

Fertilizers with a higher nutrient content will mean that you need to wait longer between applications in comparison to lawn fertilizer with a lower nutrient content. Some fertilizers can be applied once every four weeks whereas some you will need to wait as long as twelve weeks before you feed your lawn.

Knowing how long you will need to wait between applications will differ between the specific lawn fertilizer you have purchased.

A good tip to ensure that you dont over-fertilize your lawn is to make a note on a calendar the date you applied the lawn food. Read the instructions on your chosen fertilizer to see when the manufacturer recommends reapplying the feed. Then workout when the feed should be reapplied and add this date to your calendar.

Alternatively, set a reminder on your smartphone to prevent over-feeding.

The recommended frequencies of fertilizer application can be found in the tables further down in this article.

How To Apply Weed And Feed

Apply weed and feed when the temperature is below 80 F, but above freezing, a day or two after mowing the lawn to its normal height. A product containing a pre-emergent herbicide is applied to a dry lawn. If rain doesn’t fall within the following three days, irrigate the lawn thoroughly to activate the herbicide. A post-emergent weed and feed works best when applied to a wet lawn so that the granules stick to the weeds’ leaves. However, rainfall washes the granules off the leaves, so wait until no rain is forecast for several days and water your lawn before applying the product. To obtain an even distribution when applying weed and feed, use a lawn spreader. Don’t allow children or animals on the lawn while weed and feed granules remain visible to avoid contact with the herbicide.

Warning

Don’t apply weed and feed to a newly seeded lawn. Wait until the lawn has been mowed at least twice.

The Best Weed And Feed: A Comprehensive Buyers Guide

Typically, it will all depend on the type of weed and feed that you have. The reason behind this is because each manufacturer have different labels and they have different suggestions for lawn owners today.

There are manufacturers who are recommending a treatment of the lawn once every year. But if you are planning to use the weed and feeder to treat your entire lawn, then it would be best to use it twice, and you need to explicitly clarify it on the label of the weed and feed that you have purchased.

The best thing that you can do is to treat your lawn with weed and feed twice a year using two different brands. These two brands need to have different ingredients that are active.

Typically, you will only have to do this during the first and the second year to ensure that you have already got rid of the weeds that are established.

Once you are done treating your lawn, the next years will be easier since you will only have to treat your lawn once every year. Typically the best time that you can do this is during the month of September since this will surely help control the weed from sprouting during the summer and spring seasons.

When Should I Weed My Lawn

The best time to control perennial broadleaf weeds in the lawn is in the fall. In the fall, perennial broadleaf weeds move their food from their foliage to the soil, where they can be eaten by grasses and other plants.

In the spring and early summer, annual broadleaved weeds are feeding on the roots of perennial plants, causing them to wilt and die. These weeds can also be controlled by applying broad-spectrum herbicide, such as glyphosate or 2,4-D, which kills both annual and perennial weeds at the same time.

The Benefits of Feeding The Lawn

Unless youre prepared to spend literally hours of your life weeding, its never going to be possible to achieve a completely weed-free lawn. Generally speaking, weeds dont really take hold until late spring and early summer, so if you time your spring lawn fertilising session just right, hopefully, youll have a lawn thats thick and healthy enough to crowd out most of the weeds.

If youve chosen a specific weed and feed fertiliser, you can apply this to your lawn in the spring and again in autumn.

For the odd weed that appears after fertilising, you can either pull them up, making sure to get the whole root or apply spot herbicides that wont kill the grass during the weed-growing season .

If you have a small lawn, you should be able to spot remove pesky dandelions, thistles and other weeds quite easily. I like to leave the daisies because theyre so pretty and my children love them. Its easy to get into the habit of having a daily wander around the garden and pulling up a weed or three. Keep a weeding trowel handy to make the task much easier.

The odd weed adds to the beauty of a natural lawn

With a little effort, its really quite easy to boost your lawn and keep it looking lush for longer. Regular, weekly cuts throughout the summer and a good water in very dry periods will help to keep the grass in tip-top condition.

Pre-emergent weed exterminators

These types of weed killers prevent the biological growth of weeds. You need to pre-apply this before the rainy season starts.

Post-emergent weed exterminators

Exterminators of such kind are applicable during the weed growth. The usual application time is at the end of the year. Also, you may need to apply them multiple times.

Why Do I Need To Feed My Lawn

From being used as footie pitches to housing animals and being subjected to the wear and tear of daily life, our lawns work hard.

Grass is an unusual plant in that its new growth comes from the crown. This is the part of the plant where the root meets the shoot section, in line with the soil. Thats why we can mow grass over and over again throughout the warmer months of the year without it dying. Were just cutting back the old growth.

Grass roots form an extensive network under the ground and creating a healthy environment for the roots means youll be rewarded with strong, healthy grass growth.

Although like all green plants, grass creates its own food through , we can boost the nutrients it needs to do so by adding specialist lawn food to the ground.

Feeding the lawn helps the grass to grow more strongly. This, in turn, helps to reduce the amount of dreaded weeds and moss that will take hold. Fertilising your lawn will help it to look lush and green, speed up its growth and improve disease resistance.

Let The Weeds Grow Naturally

I know it sounds wierd coming from a lawn enthusiast but

Not ALL lawns need to be perfect. In fact many of the weeds that grow in the lawn are actually really beneficial for bees and other pollinators. In fact, I currently have one lawn which I dont touch and just watch the bees come and go from it when the dandelions bloom.

Things To Consider When Looking For Weed And Feed Spray For Lawns ...

As a Fertilizer it will add nitrogen to the lawn to green it up. It is not considered a slow release fertilizer, it greens up fast and fades away fast too.

As a Crabgrass Management tool, it needs to be a registered product for this purpose. It must be applied at double the rate to get any benefit for crabgrass prevention. Dr. Christians and other studies show it takes 2-3 years of applications to get to about 50-60% control of crabgrass. THATS REALLY LOW, and not normally noticeable since crabgrass plants can easily put out hundreds of seeds per individual plant, every year!

At double the rate, it can also cause surge growth, that fades quick as the nitrogen source depletes which is very stressful on a lawn in the long term.

Its main benefit is that it fertilizes the grass, and grass that is fertilized well, will grow a thick healthy stand of grass that prevents weed growth naturally. So fertilize, but if I were you, use a more balanced slow release fertilizer that has a wider spectrum of benefits than just colour. Its a very expensive source of fertilizer for what it does! There is much better value out there.

Not Mowing Frequently Enough

Mowing may seem like a no-brainer, but how you do it has a significant effect on the health and appearance of your lawn.

The right time: Mow as needed, so that cut off no more than a third of the height of your grass at a time. For example, if you set your mower at 2 inches, don’t let the grass get taller than 3 inches before mowing.

Why timing matters: Many homeowners ritually mow on weekends, effectively putting their lawns on a seven-day mowing schedule. Most of the year, weekly mowing may be fine. But in spring, when growth is vigorous, mowing may be necessary every four or five days. Longer intervals allow the grass to become too tall between cutting, stressing the lawn and making it less attractive. Keeping a well-mowed lawn is also an easy way to discourage fleas and ticks, because both pests prefer to hide out in long grass.

How To Apply Weed And Feed Using A Spreader

The usual application rate is between 30-35g per m2. So you will always want to make sure you measure out a specific area on your lawn, then weigh the right amount out before putting it in your spreader.

I go into more detail about spreaders in my article How, why & when to sow grass seed. There are a few different types of spreader you can buy. If your lawn is over 150m2, then Id suggest investing in a spreader with wheels.

You should check the instructions for the spreader to find out how much it releases within a given time and what setting it should be on for the correct application rate. Each brand will have different speeds and therefore may determine how fast you should walk when covering the area.
