How Often Should I Water My Lawn In The Summer

Lawn Watering Schedule – Spring vs Summer

Every living thing needs water, and your grass is no exception.

But simply remembering to water your lawn isnt enough. Theres a right way and a wrong way to do it, as anyone in the PA landscape construction industry can tell you.

For example, if youre not generous enough with your watering, the roots of the grass wont grow deeply, leaving your lawn in trouble at the height of summer.

And if you decided to run your sprinkler system after dark, your lawn can become too moist, leaving it open to mold and, eventually, disease.

Before you start watering, follow these steps.

Consider Using A Rain Barrel

Hydrating the lawn, especially during summer when the portion doubles can take a considerable amount of water and at times the money. You might also want to maximize rainfall that comes every once in a while.

Rain barrels are designed to catch water from your roof and store them until you need them. Youll be surprised at the quantity of water you could have at your disposal if you can do this.

What Is Grass Jelly Made Of

Grass jelly is made by boiling a plant called Chinese mesona along with starch and potassium carbonate .

Grass jelly is mostly tasteless, with a slight hint of bitterness and the texture of jello. People often cook their own grass jelly in China, or they make it from a powder that also requires cooking.

It comes in a can, much like cranberry sauce.

Simply open the can, use a butter knife to loose it from the edges, and pop it out. Then you can slice and dice the jelly into whatever shapes/sizes you like. It can be added to bubble tea, as well as some of the Asian desserts weve posted, like our Coconut Tapioca Dessert.

Do Not Water When It Rains

How Often To Water Lawn In Summer

That might sound simple but if your irrigation system operates on a set schedule, you could find yourself overwatering your lawn. Use a rain sensor or weather shut-off to stop irrigation if theres been enough rain already. Some smart irrigation controllers check the weather forecast and adjust the watering schedule for you! Irrigation specialists can also install a rain sensor for your automatic system to detect moisture and prevent overwatering.

What To Do If Your Lawn Does Not Have A Sprinkler System

If you do not have an irrigation system, alternatives can be purchased at your local hardware store and can be easily installed. When buying a hose-end sprinkler, the best products are impact sprinklers . Research has shown these sprinklers are the best in putting down a uniform and consistent amount of water.

Timers that can attach to your spigot allow you to schedule waterings through the day, as well as attach multiple hoses to one spigot.

How Frequently To Water Your Lawn With A Sprinkler System

The first step in determining how much to water your lawn in the summer is to identify what species of grass you have. For example, tall Fescue requires 1 1-5 of water per week. In contrast, Kentucky Bluegrass requires up to 2 of water per week to avoid going dormant. These amounts can increase during hot dry months during the summer. Calibration of your irrigation system by a professional or yourself in the spring will ensure a uniform amount of water is put down with each watering.

Deep, infrequent waterings through the week will encourage extensive root growth. For example, try watering each zone for twenty minutes on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday starting at 6 am.

When To Water Your Lawn

Regardless of the irrigation system, keeping your lawn properly watered doesnt have to be complex or difficult. But like the rest of the plant life in your garden, youll still have to consider things like soil conditions and weather before deciding on a system and a routine.

Your lawn needs about 1 inch of water every week to retain its bright green color and vigor. During a moist summer, you might not to manually water your lawn at all! However, if soil conditions are poor and sandy, supplemental watering might be a good idea.

Of course, youll also want to keep an eye on your grass if were experiencing a dry spell. Yellowing grass is a telltale sign that your lawn is thirsty, but it doesnt have to come to that. If you notice that your grass isnt bouncing back up after being walked on, and footprints are remaining on your lawn, water it immediately and prevent the discoloration from happening altogether.

If you want to keep your lawn fresh, green, and pristine, you should also know when not to water it. Avoid watering in the afternoonespecially on hot, sunny dayswhen most of the moisture will simply evaporate before it gets a chance to quench your plants thirst. Instead, water your plants when the soil is cool, either early morning or late evening, as theyll retain more moisture that way.

Watering Different Types Of Lawns

Professional Watering Guidelines for Utah Lawns

During the first year of your lawns growth, whether it’s a newly seeded, sodded, sprigged, or plugged lawn, don’t rely solely on Mother Nature to do the watering. Additional irrigation should always be provided.

When watering a newly seeded lawn, the key is to keep the top inch of soil consistently moist but not soggy. You will likely need to mist the seeded area once or twice a day . Once the seeds start to germinate, continue to keep the top 2 inches of soil moist until the new grass reaches a mowing height of around 3 inches. After that, begin to cut back watering to twice per week and soak the soil deeper, about 6 to 8 inches, to encourage the grass roots to grow down deep into the soil.

What Time Of Day Is Best For Watering

It is best to water your lawn very early in the morning around 5 am before the sun is up. This give the grass time to absorb the water before the heat of the day hits.

If you water during the day while the sun is out, the sun will burn off a lot of the water before it gets to the roots. Also, the droplets that are left on the blades of grass can act like a magnifying glass and burn the blades. This is the last thing you would want to happen.

The reason you should not water at night is because the water will sit on the grass overnight which encourages fungi to grow. Fungi can infect your lawn with a disease called leaf spots. This is very unattractive.

Best Time To Water Plants In Hot Weather

So, we spent a lot of time talking about how and when to water your lawn, but what about your plants? There are differences, and they largely depend upon the type of plant youre growing.

How do you know when to water?

The best way to gauge if a plant is thirsty is to check the soil near the plant in question. Ideally, you want the soil to be moist at least six inches down, and up to 12. If this is the case, theres no need to water right then. If, instead, the soil is dry, add water until the soil is moist. You can test how far down the moisture extends with a spade or a soil moisture sensor.

One thing to keep in mind is that depending on the type of soil you have, it can take a fairly long time for the water to penetrate as deeply as it needs tohours, in some cases.

When you do water, remember that it is pointless to water the leaves of a plant. In fact, if the water doesnt evaporate quickly, you put your plant at risk for disease. Instead, focus on the root zone and only the root zone.

One rule of thumb that is the same for both plants and lawns: the time of day to water. You want to do water in the early morning for all of the reasons we discussed above.

Lastly, well share with you some tips thatll help you water your lawn correctly.

First, be sure to establish the type of soil and grass you have. That way, you can water it according to its kind.

For instance, establish if you count on either sandy or clay soil. If your lawn has sandy soil, keep in mind that itll have a more challenging time retaining water. Thats why you should add some soil amendments to make it loamier. However, if you have clay soil, you will need to water it less to avoid any moisture problems.

Where you live determines how frequently you need to water because of differences in rainfall and summer weather conditions. How Much Water Does My Lawn Need

When grass isnt dormant, most lawns typically need 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week, whether from irrigation or from rain. When lawns are dormant, like cool-season grasses in the summer, they only need ½-inch of water per month.

Some grasses are more drought-tolerant than others. You may not even need to water buffalo grass and zoysia grass, making them superb choices in areas with frequent drought and water restrictions.

As well, grass with deeper roots have more access to water reserves in the soil, so you dont need to water them as much. In fact, watering less frequently but deeper will encourage your grass to grow its roots deep, and your grass will be more resilient, even through droughts.

To see if your lawn needs watering, just take a walk across the grass. When you look back, if you can still see your footprints, then its time to water.

Proper Lawn Watering Schedule // Summer Lawn Irrigation

Your grass needs up to 1½ inches of water per week in the summer, but you dont have to do it all at once. You can spread waterings out in two sessions. This will help to further protect your lawn against drought.

There are a few ways you can tell if youve given your lawn the right amount of water

    • Check your soil every 15 minutes during your first watering to see how long it takes to get soaked. Then take a shovel or a screwdriver to get a measurement. When youve determined the water has gone six inches deep, note the time. Thats how long it should take in the future.
    • If you have a sprinkler system, find what type of sprinkler head youre using and determine its flow rate. If you multiply the square footage of your lawn by 0.62 gallons and divide that figure by the flow rate, youll find out how many minutes to run your sprinkler.
    • Place empty tuna cans around the lawn and measure how long it takes for the sprinkler to fill each can with an inch of water. The sprinkler coverage will vary, so use the average time it takes to fill the cans.

One other thing you can try is the 20-minute method. Typically, it takes 20 minutes, 3 times per week to get an inch of water on your lawn. And 30 minutes, 3 times per week, will get 1½ inches down and reach even deep root systems.

But keep this in mind: During extreme heat, you will need to water more, due to evaporation and heat stress on the grass. Thats why you should try watering your lawn early in the morning.

Some people remove their grass clippings because it makes the lawn look cleaner. This isnt the best thing for your yard if you want to keep it healthy. Why? Your clippings will break down and provide nutrients for the soil and plants.

Some people like to mulch instead of doing this, but its really up to you. Just make sure youre not removing and tossing clippings and leaves. Your lawn and plants need them, and your city would prefer to keep these items out of a landfill!

    When To Water The Lawn

If you find your lawn has taken on a grayish cast or appears to be dull green, its telling you that it needs water. You can also check your lawn by walking on it: If your footprints dont disappear quickly, its because the grass blades dont have the needed moisture to spring back. While it may seem like you can head out to water your lawn anytime during the day, your lawn actually needs more specific care. Watering in the morning is the best time for your lawn its cooler and winds tend to be calmer so water can soak into the soil and be absorbed by the grass roots before it can evaporate. If you must water in the evening, try between 4 and 6 p.m. which should give the grass blades time to dry before nightfall. The later you water, the greater chance of disease becoming prevalent in your lawn. Its worth noting, though, that you dont necessarily have to water your lawn. Lawns are resilient. Established and properly cared-for lawns can survive weeks without water by going dormant , then recover once the rain returns.
