I was in the Farm Coop store the other day in line to buy some garden seeds. The farmer in front of me ordered fifty pounds of Kentucky 31 Tall Fescue. I thought, Oh my God, you poor dear, havent you heard?

Those seeds are infected with an internal fungus that secretes an alkaloid that will be toxic to your livestock.

We should not plant another seed of Tall Fescue. Not only is it invasive and non-native , it is toxic to just about everything that consumes it and it inhibits the growth of other plants.

Tall Fescue is one of the most dominant grasses found in pastures, hayland, lawns, roadsides, wetlands and vacant lots throughout most of North America. It is almost always infected with an internal fungus, an endophyte , which produces an alkaloid that is toxic.

Weve known for years its grave effects on pregnant horses: abortions, thickened placentas, and limited milk. Cattle get fescue toxicosis or summer slump which includes elevated body temperature, hoof rot, tail rot, lower conception rates and lower weight gain.

Weed Barrier Landscape Fabric

Weed-blocking landscape fabric is tightly-woven material that is placed over the ground surface to effectively block weeds, grass, or other plants from growing up from beneath it. However, it is permeable to water, allowing for drainage and air exchange to the soil below. Landscape fabric comes in large rolls, and is typically pinned in place with landscaping staples. We like these long contractor staples they stay put really well!

If you go this route, I highly suggest to invest in commercial-grade weed barrier fabric like this option, or this one. The average thin, stretchy, black plastic-like material usually found in your garden center is not very durable. It easily rips, tears, and otherwise makes a hot mess. The commercial-duty stuff is far more sturdy and will last indefinitely.

We install high-quality weed barrier fabric below all of our deep raised garden beds, along with hardware cloth to block the gophers. The fabric extends out beyond the outer edges of the beds to prevent creeping weeds from getting back in. Yet I dont suggest using landscape fabric below shallow raised beds . That is, unless the space was intensely weedy and it is necessary. Why? Because the fabric will block and prevent roots from traveling deeper into the soil below. Many plants prefer more than 12 of soil to grow big and healthy.

Quackgrass has creeping rhizomes that grow at a fast rate. If left uncontrolled, the rhizomes can spread at a rate of ten feet a year, making this weed highly invasive.

How To Kill Bermuda Grass Organically: Smothering

Follow these steps to smother your Bermuda grass:

Step 1: Scalp the upper layer with a garden spade or sod cutter. You can rent a sod cutter from your local power equipment rental place.

Step 2: Pile the sod in an out-of-the-way location and cover it with a heavy plastic tarp to decompose.

Step 3: Cover the scalped ground with three or four layers of heavy-duty cardboard.

Step 4: Cover the cardboard with 4 to 6 inches of mulch.

Step 5: Leave everything undisturbed for six months before planting.

After removing Bermuda grass, stay vigilant. This tough grass is capable of reestablishing as quickly as before by roots, stems, mower clippings, and seeds. Learn to recognize it and dig it out whenever you spot it. Itâs impossible to eradicate troublesome Bermuda grass, but with constant suppression, you can keep it under control.

What Is Johnson Grass

Willbleach Kill Weeds Permanently

Bleach will kill most small weeds. It won’t work against larger or invasive weeds like Ivy, Brambles or Knotweed. If you use it on soiled areas you will no longer be able to use that space for growing, it can take several months before your soil is suitable for planting.

Bleach is not good for the environment so I dont recommend using it in the garden. You could use it on areas like cracks in the concrete of your driveway but the recipe I listed above is just as effective and wont harm wildlife.

Solarizing To Kill Your Grass

For larger areas, one of the best ways to kill unwanted grass is to cook it. Focusing the sun on areas of the sod at its highest heat level will cook the roots and effectively kill it. You can use an old window or black plastic to hone the sun and heat in on the area. The optimal time for solarization is summer when the sun is at its hottest.

Cut the grass to a short length and then cover the area with plastic or glass. Black plastic works best but you can also use clear plastic. Hold the plastic down with rocks, soil staples, boards or whatever you have handy. It can take a few weeks to a month to kill the roots completely. Then remove the covering and turn over or remove the dead sod.

Get Rid Of Your Grass

The first step in transforming your yard is to remove the grass, but dont get out the shovels just yet. The easiest way to kill your grass is to wrap your lawn in black plastic, so use garbage bags weighed down with rocks for a cheap solution. Youll want to keep the lawn sealed off for at least two weeks.

After you remove the plastic, dig out the dead grass. Youll want to use a square-headed shovel to slice off the grass and roots. Use the shovel to make incisions into the grass, soil every couple feet and remove the excess chunks. You can compost the dead grass, but do not use as mulch immediately. Remaining seeds in the dead grass could sprout in your flower-beds.

Deeply Water Your Lawn

Weeds thrive in stressed lawns. Most grass species benefit from deep watering. Make sure your lawn receives one inch of water per week, either from rain or watering. The water needs to soak the soil six to eight inches deep. Deep watering encourages your lawn to develop deeper roots, so it can grow thicker to help crowd out weeds.

Treatment Of The Weed

A good way of killing tall fescue is by using a non-selective post-emergent product. Herbicides such as Eraser 41% Glyphosate can get rid of tall fescue completely. However, this weed killer can damage your lawn when it comes in contact with the grass. A selective herbicide cannot control tall fescue. This means that you cannot spray without killing the surrounding grass. So, how can you kill tall fescue without causing an impact on your lawn?

• Water the lawn if you are in the summer season. Watering the lawn will allow the tall fescue weed to grow faster than your grass. When the lawn is 2-4 inches tall, the weed will be 6-7 inches.
• Wear protective gear such as gloves, goggles, and a long-sleeved shirt.
• Soak a sponge into the herbicide containing glyphosate. Perform this on an area away from your lawn. Squeeze excess solution, so it does not drip on your lawn.
• Use the sponge to brush the blades of tall fescue weed. Also, you can use a fan spray nozzle setting where tall fescue is concentrated. This will help you get an even fine coating on the weed.
• Dig the fescue clumps weed after it dries completely. Also, you can leave it to decompose completely. It is advisable to treat fescue when it is young. A mature weed is more resistant to chemicals. It may need repeated applications, and can take about two weeks to die.
• To prevent further infestations, it is good to water and fertilize your lawn more regularly.

Use Bark Mulch Or Chipped Branches

Mulch is material applied to the surface of soil which helps to suppress weeds and retain moisture. This could be grass clippings from the lawn, bark mulch etc. You can buy bark mulch or make your own chippings from branches using an electric chipper. These normally cost less than $200. Mulch can be used around the trunks of trees to prevent grass growth and the need for string trimming. It can also be applied to flower beds to suppress weed growth. Bark mulch or chippings can be used to create natural pathways in the garden also.

Measure And Mark Off The Area
