Eliminating Zoysia Without Chemicals

Removing Bermudagrass from a Zoysia lawn

Everyone knows zoysiagrass is a tough grass to get rid of. Why anyone would want to get rid of it, I don’t know because zoysia is so gorgeous in the spring and summer. But I found a page at URI that claims you can get rid of zoysia naturally, without chemicals. Here’s the quoted passage:

“Many people plant zoysiagrass with the hope that it will solve all their lawn problems. After observing it for one or two winters, some people change their minds and hope to eliminate it. Their task is not easy.

“If you do not wish to use chemicals, or if complete or fast elimination is not required, you can use the following procedures.

1. Fertilize in September and October only.2. Raise the height of cut to 3 inches or higher. After several years, this type of management encourages the cool-season turfgrasses to overtake the zoysiagrass.

“Faster elimination is possible. You would have to kill the entire zoysia lawn with a non-selective weed killer such as glyphosate, then renovate and reseed .”

Why would those 2 steps above encourage cool-season grass to overtake zoysia?

I can kinda see that the Sept/Oct fertilizing would favor cool-season grasses since they’re waking up from their summer slumber while zoysia is falling asleep, but why would a 3-inch or more cutting height hamper zoysia in favor of cool-season grasses?

Bake The Grass To A Pulp

Areyou looking for a cheap and reliable solution to the zoysia menace? Well, thesun might be your only way out. All you must do is water the vegetation to adepth of one foot and cover the grass with a one-millimeter tarp.

You need a thin tarp because it lets the hit in fast. Thicker covers are, however, recommended for windy areas. Last, you must suspend tarp edges with rocks to prevent the heat from escaping. For the record, solarization works fast and can destroy the grass is as few as eight weeks.

Zoysia Grass & Crabgrass

Crabgrass is an annual summer grass that is classified as a weed. It is available in many cultivars and hybrids. Crabgrass sometimes grows upright but typically grows in a flattened, prostrate habit. The sheath and blades of large crabgrass are covered with dense hairs. During winter dormancy, zoysia grass ceases growing and turns a pale, straw color. Zoysia spreads by stolens and rhizomes and, once established, forms a dense, carpetlike lawn. Zoysia is a slow-growing grass that can take several years to become established unless it is installed as sod. Crabgrass is grown as forage in some areas of the Midwest because it is palatable to livestock and withstands conditions that many cool-weather grasses cannot tolerate.

  • Follow with a post-emergent selective herbicide such as clethodim and fluazifop.
  • Zoysia spreads by stolens and rhizomes and, once established, forms a dense, carpetlike lawn.

Warning

Non-selective herbicides such as glyphosate are sometimes recommended against crabgrass, but such products are systemic and will kill both the weeds and your zoysia lawn.

Summary Of How To Kill Zoysia Grass

How to kill Zoysia grass? I dont get asked that question very often because, usually if someone has Zoysia, they want to keep it. In most peoples eyes, its a very aesthetically pleasing and a real nice grass to walk on.

But, to answer your question, I guess you kill Zoysia the same way you kill any grass, whether it be weeds or any of the other grasses that we carry. But the most effective chemical out there is the Roundup, or the active ingredient in Roundup. Thats the surefire way.

You spray it out there on your Zoysia grass. Follow the directions on the bottle, I believe its four to six ounces of chemical per gallon, the concentrated chemical, per gallon of water. You put it up in a pump up sprayer, and you can spray it out there evenly.

Give it 10 days or so to die. And if you see any green anywhere you spray those areas again. And then you, generally, if I was removing this and Im getting it ready to put something else out, I would use a sod cutter at that point, and I would take very little dirt, take the sod cutter, cut the top off and get rid of all the vegetation, leave bare dirt. And that would leave you a good surface to lay something new on top of.

What You Need To Know About Zoysia Grass

Lawn Care Tips and Weed Control for Zoysia Lawns in Summer

Zoysia grass is native to Asia and Australia, but its been in the United States since at least 1895, when Americans first became invested in their lawns.

As you can probably guess from its native habitat, Zoysia is a warm-season grass, which means that it grows during warm months and lies dormant during cold months. Its also a perennial, which means it comes back every year

There are three main Zoysia species seen in the United States:

  • Zoysia japonica
  • Zoysia tenuifolia
  • They can be distinguished from each other by appearance, aggressiveness, and growth.

Zoysia japonica is the only Zoysia species with seed thats available commercially . It has a light green color and coarse leaves.

Zoysia matrella is often called Manilagrass . It has a finer leaf than Zoysia japonica, but its also less cold-tolerant and grows slower.

Finally, Zoysia tenuifolia is unique because it tends to form small clumps, which makes it appear puffy. Its even less cold-tolerant than Zoysia matrella, so if you live somewhere with four seasons, this may not be the ideal grass for you.

    Weed Control In Zoysia Grass

Every week, Zoysia grass requires 1 inch of water. If there isnt any rain, one morning of sprinkler watering each week should suffice.

Because Zoysia is a thick turf, it is susceptible to fungus and weeds, so water it early in the morning so it can dry out over the day.

Mow your zoysia grass to a height of 0.5 to 2 inches.

Weeds are less likely to produce seed heads and spread when mowed. It also offers you the opportunity to inspect your entire lawn for any weeds that may have sprouted.

Make sure to collect the grass cuttings in a bag. The weed heads can get right back into the grass and re-sprout if you dont use a bag or put the clippings back on the grass.

Check for any shaded areas on the lawn. Some well-bladed Zoysia grass thrives well in the shade. However, shade can lead to bare spots if the lawn is not receiving sufficient sunlight.

This can allow weeds to grow by creating an open canopy.

Adding fertilizer to your lawn doesnt necessarily get rid of the weeds but helps cover up the spaces around the grass with a thick layer above the soils surface.

In this sense, weeds will have to strive for space to sprout.

When To Remove Thatch In Zoysia Grass

There is no hard and fast rule on dethatching a zoysia lawn however, you can take a small plug and examine the level of thatch easily. Cut out a small plug and look at the root zone and the base of the leaves. If there is a bunch of dry, dead leaf blades built up at the base of the plug, it is probably time to dethatch.

The rule on most grasses is a half-inch . At this level, the grass may root in the thatch making it less stable, winter injury may occur, drought is more extreme, and pests and disease become more frequent.

Early spring is the best time to dethatch. This is when sod is actively growing and can quickly recover from the process.

What Causes Brown Spots In Zoysia Grass

Areas of your lawn that are most susceptible to Large Patch fungus are caused by environmental conditions. Excessive thatch, compaction, and poor drainage conditions encourage fungus. Additionally, excessive watering in the fall, either through rainfall or irrigation, will promote the disease.

Getting Rid Of Weeds In Lawn Naturally

    Lawn Problems: Zoysia Grass

    4.Lawn Aeration

Compacted soil is the enemy of a great lawn. Grassroots struggle to get access to enough oxygen, water, and nutrients down into their roots. Meanwhile, weeds take over.

Invest in one of the many lawn aeration tools available, allowing you to reintroduce airflow and nutrients by creating deep thin holes across your lawn surface.

    5. Pull weeds out by hand

Perhaps the most environmentally-friendly way of getting rid of weeds is to pull them out by hand. These weeds can then be left to dry in the sun and used as compost or mulch.

However, its easier said than done when it comes to pulling out all those weeds from a large lawn area. So if youre looking for quicker ways, you may want to try my other suggestions instead.

    6.Use a home-made herbicide

Boiling water is by far the simplest natural herbicide you can use to kill your weeds. Simply boil a large pot of water on the stove, then pour it over the leaves and stems of the weeds.

Boiling water doesnt harm the environment and works effectively to burn the weeds. Word of caution: take extra care when carrying the big pot of boiling water as you dont want to burn yourself in the process.

    7. Sprinkle cornmeal

Simply sprinkle your lawn with cornmeal to prevent the seeds from germinating. This natural treatment is best done in early spring. Note: dont try this method on your vegetable garden. Otherwise, you wont harvest anything!

    8.Cover with mulch

    9. Pickle them with vinegar

    Will Fusilade Kill Zoysia

With all the Zoysia being planted in the area, Fusilade II has another useful application: Killing bermudagrass in stands of Zoysia. However, it is not labeled for home lawns, but it can be used in residential beds. Late summer application can be reduced to 2-3 oz./A as bermudagrass is preparing for dormancy.

    Where Stray Zoysia Comes From

It is very common for zoysia to encroach onto your lawn from an adjoining lot. This is especially prevalent where your lawn is weak or damaged.

Encroachment also comes during times of drought. Extensive rhizomes let zoysia grass collect water while other grasses struggle. These rhizomes also help zoysia grass recover quickly after its been damaged.

Zoysia grass can also be introduced by stray seeds falling into bare spots. Zoysia grass is also used in seed blends marketed to fill bare spots. Regardless of the source, zoysia grass is difficult and frustrating to remove.

Get Rid Of Torpedograss In St Augustinegrass And Centipede

I face this one too.I have Floratam and Palmetto St Augustine grasses in my front and side lawns. Sadly, there is no selective herbicide available that will control the torpedograss if you also have this grass type, but I do have some decently good news.First off, torpedo grass actually blends in ok with St Augustinegrass. Its not ideal, but it doesnt stick out like a sore thumb like it does in zoysia or bermuda. The wider blade of torpedo grass resembles St Augustine and Centipede fairly well. Torpedo grass also turns pretty dark green when you hit it with iron, just like your St Augustine will and to a lesser degree, centipede grass too.

If areas of the lawn get too thick with torpedo grass and you just cant stand it anymore, this is where surgery comes in. Many of us here in Florida are accustomed to waiting until areas get really bad, then we just cut out a nice big square and resod it. A pallet of sod will cover 400 sq ft and costs around $250. This is an option we often have to choose with St Augustine and Centipede not only for invading torpedo grass, but also for the invading common bermuda that also has no selective herbicide available for its control.

Cultural Methods Of Weed Control In Zoysia Grass

How To Get Rid of Zoysia Grass

Mowing is a great way to keep your grass healthy and tidy. Although mowing heights for Zoysia differ slightly depending on the brand, a height of 0.5-2 inches is ideal.

Weeds are less likely to produce seed heads and spread when mowed. It also allows you to walk every portion of your lawn frequently, looking for other potential weeds. Be careful to collect the grass cuttings in a bag.

While spreading bag clippings on your lawn might provide essential nourishment, it also reintroduces any seed heads you recently moved into your grass.

Mowing your lawn rather than getting someone else to do it can save you money because they wont be bringing over a mower with grass clippings stuck between the blades.

These grass clippings and seed heads might probably end up in your lawn, causing weeds to grow.

Keep an eye out for any portions of your yard that are shaded. In the shade, some fine-bladed zoysia grasses continue to thrive.

On the other hand, Shade might cause bare spots on your lawn since the grass isnt getting enough sunshine.

As a result, weeds might grow in the open space created by your grasss canopy.

Although fertilizing your lawn does not immediately remove weeds, it does assist your grass in forming a dense, thick layer above the soils surface, forcing weeds to compete for space.

Fertilize your zoysia grass regularly to keep it lush and healthy.
