What Are Some Natural Ways To Kill Weeds In Grass

How to Prevent Weeds from Growing in your Lawn

Pouring boiling water onto the weeds is a good way to both kill the invasive plants at the roots and water the rest of the lawn at the same time. Simply bring your kettle to a boil and walk around your lawn, looking for newly-sprouted weeds. This method works better on sidewalks and other such areas, because the water can kill surrounding grasses if they are not particularly hearty.

There are several organic weed killers available to environmentally-conscious gardeners. One of these, corn gluten meal, is a safe, proven method for eliminating weeds and not killing the grass surrounding it. The milling process prevents weeds from germinating into full-grown plants, but should not be used on newly-grown grass. It also happens to be safe for animals and has the added bonus of adding nitrogen to your lawn. Nitrogen makes for great fertilizer and its one of the elements created when composting as well.

How Do You Stop Weeds From Growing On New Sod

Generally, weeds should not emerge in new sod since high-quality, premium sod is free of weeds, so you can start a green, fresh lawn of weed-free, healthy grass.

Nonetheless, weeds can be a nuisance, especially if you dont kill them before laying sod, so how do you stop weeds from growing on new sod?

The best way to stop weeds coming up through new sod is treating your lawn with pre-emergent herbicide before laying sod, this prevents weeds from emerging.

Moreover, you can stop weeds by pulling sprouting weeds by hand or using organic weed control methods like using vinegar.

Addressing weed issues is essential for caring for your new lawn, so dont overlook it since letting them thrive will result in poor, patchy grass or kill them entirely.

Deprive Weeds Of Water

Weeds can’t survive without moisture. In areas with little or no summer rain, drip irrigation or soaker hoses help prevent weed seeds from sprouting by depriving them of water. These systems deliver water to the root zone of plants at the soil level. The soil surface and area surrounding the plants stays relatively dry. In contrast, overhead sprinkler systems spray water over the entire soil surface and supply both garden plants and weeds with water.

You can get in-depth information on drip irrigation from the Irrigation and Green Industry Network in the “Where to Find It” section.

How To Prevent Weeds

How to Stop Grass & Weeds From Growing Close to a Fence

The best way to prevent weeds from spreading throughout your garden is to stop them before they take root. Knowing how to prevent weeds means understanding the task is not a one-time job, but rather a continual garden chore. But even those who pull weeds begrudgingly do so knowing that preventing weeds as they appear, or quickly after theyve sprouted, takes a lot less time than removing an established weed infestation. Consider taking the following steps for a weed free gardening experience.

  • Cultivate with Caution
  • You cant avoid tilling or hand cultivating when creating a new garden bed. Its the best way to aerate the soil and incorporate organic material. What you dont see is the buried weed seeds lying dormant just under the surface of the soil. Moving them to the top of the soil wakes them up and boosts them into germination. Once youve established a new garden bed, avoid unnecessary tilling and cultivating unless absolutely necessary.

  • Apply a Pre-emergent
  • Mulch Your Beds
  • Grow Plants Closely
  • Weeds just love the open, sunny spaces between garden plants. Plant vegetables, flowers and shrubs at the closest recommended spacing. Consider using block spacing instead of growing in rows to eliminate the open areas weeds tend to pop up in.

How Do You Get Rid Of Annual Meadow Grass

Annual meadow grass is often a result of a slightly-neglected lawn maintenance routine, but can be easily eradicated

Annual meadow grass, otherwise known as Poa annua, is a course type of grass that grows around the world from all across the Northern Hemisphere to the most southern tip of South America.

It can spread into borders from poorly-maintained lawns and mulches of grass clippings. As the RHS explains, you can identify it in your lawn by the flowering, which can occur below the height of cut. The small, pale seed heads will give your lawn a peppered look.

To prevent it, the best thing to do is to take on a good lawn care routine. You can also try to remove larger clumps by hand. Lay fresh soil where needed and scatter in new grass seed, to fill in any gaps.

For specific tips on killing grass in flower beds, our practical guide will come in use.

The Benefits Of A Weed Free Lawn

There are two main reasons why people want to see green grass and not much else on their turf. The first is appearance: they look bad. People dont want yellow heads sticking up everywhere from dandelions, painful shrubs growing up from thistles, bunchy short plants growing like clover, and invasive purple eyesores like creeping bellflower spouting up everywhere. Weeds are essentially like acne natural yet unwanted.

The Yard Dawgs specialty is ensuring the lawns we service stay green and weed free all season long.

The second reason to go weed free is that weeds are invasive by nature they want to grow as much at possible at the expense of other plants around it. Its a dawg eat dawg world when it comes to lawn weeds. Whenever a drop of water, nutrient, or beam of sunlight comes down its a big competition for who gets it. Your grass roots are going head-to-head with the roots of weeds.

If you let nature take its course, unfortunately the weeds will win. They are a yearly problem for millions of homeowners everywhere. Weeds also reproduce much more rapidly than your lawn’s grass. A single dandelion can produce up to 200 seeds, which is potential for 200 more dandelions.

Your grass cannot thrive so long as weeds are there stealing nutrients from your turf. The only way to have flourishing grass is to minimize the potential for weeds and do it without harming your lawn.

How Do You Get Rid Of Groundsel

Try to eradicate groundsel from your plot before it flowers

A native annual, groundsel is busy flowering and setting seed throughout the year. Even seeds that have been buried in soil for up to six months will germinate when exposed to light.

When looking to remove this weed, it’s important to tease out the plants before the small yellow flowers and fluffy seed heads appear. Left to get a foothold, the leaves become host to rust fungus, which can spread to your plants.

Heat Is The Key To Composting Weeds

Few experiences compare to the joy of watching weeds shrivel in the sun after a morning weeding session, but then what should you do with them? Their best resting place, of course, is a compost pile or bin, which is the end of the story if the weeds going in are free of seeds. In reality, however, a good half of the weeds you pull probably hold seeds. Separating the seedies from other weedies is impractical, so weed seeds in compost are customarily killed by raising the temperature in the heap.

Keep it hot. Running a hot heap calls for precise mixing and remixing of materials. Rather than struggle to heat up a heap that wants to run cold, I suggest waiting until a weedy heap reaches a nearly rotted state to set things right. From there, you can solarize small batches of moist compost in black plastic nursery liners that are enclosed in clear plastic bags and placed in the sun for two to three days.

Now youre cooking. Easier than solarizing, plug in an old Crock-Pot outdoors, turn it to its lowest setting, and warm batches of compost while you sleep .

Heat treating weedy compost destroys many of the microscopic life-forms that give compost its punch, so its a good idea to reprocess cooked compost for two to three weeks before using it in the garden. Place it in a plastic storage bin with a handful of earthworms borrowed from your garden and it will soon be laced with humic acids and other plant-pleasing compounds.

Top Weed Killer Treatments For Your Lawn

If you want to kill the weeds in spring before the growing season, it is recommended to get a pre-emergent formula applied in the fall or early spring. For existing weeds, however, we suggest you get a post-emergent product with fertilizer. There are also great spot treatment weed killers with triggers for convenience.

Below are a handful of popular weed killers for your lawn.

    Sprinkle In Some Salt

Similar to vinegar, salt is an effective weed killer that demands caution when used around grass and other plants. Both rock salt and table salt work when combined with ingredients like dish soap and vinegar, as either a preventative measure or for DIY weed control. For this natural weed killer recipe, follow the steps below.

    • 1 tbsp liquid dish soap

To make this simple weed and root killer, mix the ingredients in a large bucket, then add to a spray bottle for more comfortable use. Spray directly onto the weeds, or in areas where you know weeds may pop up soon.

Add vinegar and salt directly to old tree and shrub roots to kill them. Drilling holes in the stump for easier access to the interior helps make the process go a little faster but realize that it will take some time to die completely.

If you want to avoid harming innocent nearby plants, use the same technique when using plain vinegar and wipe the solution along the surface of the weed itself.

    Pulling The Weeds By Hand

Either by hand, or with a removal tool, pulling the weed out of the ground by the root and tossing it in your compost bin is an instant remedy. Weeds fight this by purposely breaking at the surface of the ground so that their roots live to grow another day.

Using a flathead screwdriver, a ford, or a special tool designed for weed pulling is the best way to remove the entire weed from head to toe. Make sure you wear gloves while doing so, as some weeds have prickly surfaces that can really cause a sting.

Its important to remember that pulling the weed by the leaves or step will cause it to snap. So long as the roots survive, you can bet that weed will be back in a matter of days. The tools you use must completely remove the weed from the ground so that its gone.

For dandelions, do this while the heads are yellow since once, they are white, they will spread seeds like crazy upon movement. If your kids are going to blow them into the wind, do it at the local field, not on your lawn!

Off With Their Heads With A Scuffle Hoe

The scuffle hoe gets its names from the double-edged hinged blade that rocks back and forth with a push-pull motion. As it rocks, it slices weeds off at the crown. Repeated beheading depletes the weed roots of stored food and the plant dies. Shallow cultivation also avoids bringing more weed seeds to the surface where they can sprout.

Wear protective clothing and gloves when handling bleach.

    Homemade Weed Control with Bleach

    • 5 cups chlorine bleach
    • 5 cups boiling water

Stir the bleach solution in a large bucket using a long-handled spoon or piece of wood to blend the ingredients. Pour the formula into a small spray bottle and cover the remaining bleach solution with a plastic tarp.

If you do not use the rest of the bleach after 24 hours, then throw it out. Spray the weeds directly and repeat the process as necessary once a week, though one spray should be sufficient for killing the weeds on contact.
