Experts are also split on the safety of glyphosate.

Alex Berezow, PhD, is vice president of Scientific Affairs for the American Council on Science and Health, a pro-science consumer group.

Glyphosate is safe to use, regardless of the brand, Berezow told Healthline. The people who are exposed to the highest doses are farmers. But studies show that farmers dont have increasing rates of cancer despite the fact that more and more glyphosate has been used over the years.

We also asked Kara Cook, MA, to weigh in. Shes the toxics program director for the U.S. Public Interest Research Group, a coalition of nonprofit organizations.

At the current moment, theres no commonly agreed upon safe level of glyphosate, Cook told Healthline. Roundup For Lawns Will It Kill My Lawn

There is a new product for 2017 called Roundup for Lawns. No, it will not kill your lawn unless you use it improperly. But if you are a little confused about the product name, it shows you have been paying attention!

Before this year every Roundup product since its introduction in the 1970s has been a broad spectrum, post-emergent herbicide. Roundup has always killed weeds AND the grass around the weeds essentially every green vascular plant. The active ingredient has always been glyphosate.

Roundup, the trade name, and glyphosate, the active ingredient, became synonymous.

This year Monsanto with its marketing partner Scotts has entered the market to kill broadleaf weeds in turf. The market is already served by familiar products such as Weed B Gon made by Ortho, , Trimec and Speedzone, both sold by HBI Gordon. The marketing wizards at Monsanto-Scotts chose to call the new product Roundup for Lawns and not Four-Way Lawn Weedkiller from the makers of Roundup.

One thing is clear: Roundup for Lawns does not repeat not contain glyphosate.

It DOES contain the same old stuff as most of the existing selective herbicide products for lawns, which begs the question: Why go to the expense of introducing a new product? Did the world really need another selective weed killer that differs from the field in brand name only? I guess the market will provide the answers.

Overseed For Roundup Repair

Overseeding is the process of applying a fresh layer of grass seed on an existing lawn to refresh the turf.

This is a great way to reinvigorate an existing lawn without starting over from scratch.

Overseeding will also fill in bare patches left behind from herbicide application. This method also helps to avoid the appearance of lush patches of reseeded grass in an otherwise tired lawn.

• Begin by mowing the lawn. Normally the lawn should be mowed only one-third at a time, keeping the blades about three-inches tall. Before overseeding, the grass should be cut a bit lower to accommodate the new soil and seeds.

• Aerate the lawn. This can be done with a plug aerator or a thatching rake. Both methods help to break up the top layer of soil and loosen up the thick layer of thatch that keeps nutrients from entering the soil to feed the grass roots.

• Apply a quarter-inch layer of very fine mulch or high-quality soil. This should not be a layer of plain topsoil. The goal is to give the lawn a shot of high quality nutrients. Spread this mulch with a rake evenly across the entire lawn. The mulch should not be thick enough to kill existing grass. This is called topdressing.

• A fertilizer can be applied over the top of the mulch. Some turf builder grass seed mixes have fertilizers pre-applied to the seeds so that homeowners can skip the step of fertilization.

• Use a broadcast spreader to apply the new grass seed over the entire lawn.

How To Apply Weed Killer

Even if you select the right weed killer, applying it incorrectly can make your efforts fruitless, and the wrong application can cause complications.

Many weed killers need to be diluted with water and put in a spray bottle. The products label will explain precisely how much water and weed killer youll need to combine. Some weed killers, however, come in granular form. Solid weed killers must be applied with a spreader.

When applying weed killer, timing is everything. You dont want to apply weed killer immediately after mowing your lawn since that could harm your tender grass. The same goes for fertilizer. In both cases, wait several days before applying weed killer.

The weather also plays a role in when to apply weed killer. Applying weed killer when its too hot can stress your grass, and applying it right too soon before it rains means it can wash away before it gets absorbed.

Using Herbicides Chemicals To Kill Violets In Lawn
