When Not To Fertilize Your Lawn

- Spring is the best time to test your yards pH to determine if your soil is too acidic. Most grasses grow best when the soil pH is between 5.8 and 7.2. If your soil is too acidic, you can see an influx of moss, weeds, diseases and insect pests.
- Use a soil test kit to find your soil’s pH or ask a county extension agent if he or she can test for you.
- In many parts of the country, lime application can make the soil less acidic and help the grass better absorb fertilizers and nutrients from the soil.
- Soil pH changes over time, so retest yearly until your results are balanced. Afterwards, an established lawn can be tested every three years or so.
- Spring and fall are the best times to add lime to a lawn that needs it. Use soil test results to know how much lime to apply and follow the directions on the lime package.
Tip: Grass planted in spring may need extra watering, weeding and other attention during the summer. Fall seeding requires less fuss.

Aerating helps promote airflow in your grass, but it also helps loosen the soil so your lawn can absorb more moisture.

Here in New Hampshire, we get a lot of sand, salt, and gravel pushed onto our lawns from snow removal. Its very difficult to get out with a rake alone! Groom The Grass At The Beginning Of The Season
Dont be surprised if your grass looks sad and worn down when the snow clears. The winter is a harsh challenge for any lawn. In the early spring, lightly rake the lawn to help perk up the turf ahead of the growing season. As soon as the soil dries out a bit, carefully clear away leaves and dead grass using a regular leaf rake. This will break up any matted areas and improve airflow the surface of the blades.
Wait to begin raking until the ground has dried out and firmed up in the spring. If the soil is muddy, you risk damaging the grass by walking and working on it. Also remember to be gentle. The old grass and new growth are fragile, plus moist soil makes it easier to pull the blades out of the ground.
What Should You Do For Your Lawn In The Spring
I received the following question last week through the Cooperative Extension Ask the Expert system. It illustrates how confusing the lawn care industry is to homeowners trying to do the right thing on their lawns:
I have a turf-based lawn. I intend to weed and feed in early March. I know that my lawn needs a pre-emergent to control Bermuda/crabgrass. However, there are also other weeds, e.g., clover and other varieties. What weed control do you recommend and when should it be applied?
First, forget about weed and feed products. They do not make sense for your lawn. Apply most of the fertilizer your lawn needs in the fall and if anything, only apply ½ lb of nitrogen/ 1000 square feet in the spring. Apply that small amount of fertilizer in March and no later than April 15. Apply weed control later in the spring so bundling those two products will not work.
They also mention clover and other weeds. Clover is not an annual, so a preemergent herbicide will not control it. Instead, use a broadleaf herbicide specific for clover control once the clover is green and growing, but still young and susceptible to chemical control. When you use selective herbicides, you must know which weed you are controlling. For example 2,4-D products will control dandelions but not clover.

Naturally, you cant apply lawn weed and feed during the winter. When the temperatures are below zero weedings and feeding isnt recommended, because the soil is too hard and cant absorb the nutrients. Summer is also a not good idea for weeding and feeding because the soil can be too dry for absorbing the nutrients. However, there are some exceptions, for instance with Scotts weed and feed schedule.

When your lawn is looking a little shabby, you may be tempted to throw some fertilizer on it. But when, how, and at what time you fertilize your lawn requires some careful consideration.
The best time of day to fertilize a lawn is morning because that’s when the temperature is cooler and the grass is moist with dew. Heat and dryness are your enemies when fertilizing your lawn. Even without hot temperatures, applying chemical fertilizers to grass exposes it to the danger of burning. Plus fertilizer should be watered immediately into the soil, and this task is easier to perform on a lawn already moist. The exception is with “weed and feed” products, which you don’t want to water in immediately: You want the herbicidal component to maintain contact with the weeds for a period of time.

To get rid of lawn weeds, apply a combined fertilizer, weed killer, and moss killer in mid-spring.
If you would rather not use moss killers and herbicides, apply 4oz per sq m of blood, fish and bone mix monthly, from mid-spring to late summer if rain isn’t expected for two days, advises John Negus, gardening expert for Amateur Gardening. ‘This encourages grass to grow robustly and outpace the moss and weeds.’
