The key to getting rid of lawn grubs is first identifying their signs, and then applying the best control method as I am going to show you here.

The white grub worms in your lawn are a larval stage of scarab beetles. As soon as winter ends, these worms become active when warmth kicks in. They start to damage your lawn by eating grass roots at a high rate.

If you fail to identify and kill lawn grubs on time, theyll develop into pupae, and later into full-grown beetles. The beetles will later start eating lawn grass and other foliage in your yard, causing even further plant damage.

But how do you know youre dealing with grubs in your lawn and not a disease or other problems?

With the damage caused by insecticides, can this method be discarded? Not at all! There are safer ways to apply insecticides for grub control with minimal damage to beneficial organisms.

What Exactly Are Grub Control Products

Grub control is a short-lived compound that kills grubs at all stages. And if you find large amounts of grubs in your lawn or garden in the fall or spring, then applying grub control is the best way to get rid of them.

Two compounds are consideredgrub killers carbaryl and trichlorfon. And they do their job really well, especially if you apply them at the right season. But what is the best time to kill grubs? While it mostly depends on the product, the aforementioned grub killers get rid of about 20-80% of the grub population if you apply them in September. In October, they will kill only 20-55% of all grubs. And while these do a great job at killing big grubs, they are not as effective against newly hatched pests. Thus, its important to understand when to put down grub killer and consider grub control.

The grub control products are very effective when you not only need to get rid of the pests that are about to hatch, but also protect your turf from further grub invasion. But do keep in mind that grub control is designed to prevent future grub problems, not to kill existing larvae.

Its also important to note that grub control wont be as effective if you apply it in spring, and it wont work on the large grubs, active from September to May.

What To Look For In Grub Preventers

If you want a good grub preventer, you should look for products that contain imidacloprid, thiamethoxam, chlorantraniliprole. These ingredients target the grubs when they are still vulnerable. Keep in mind that the best time for an application depends on the ingredients. And usually, these will reduce the grub population by about 75-100% if you apply the grab preventers in June or July.

However, remember that you need to irrigate the lawn immediately after applying the grub control.

Few admire their looks. But, before dismissing them as nothing but gross menaces, grubs the larval stage of certain adult beetles are common in lawns and do play a role in the natural order of things .

David Shetlar is a professor emeritus with a doctoral degree in entomology at The Ohio State University. Hes also co-author of the comprehensive guide Garden Insects of North America, plus other pest management tomes including Managing Turfgrass Pests.

Shetlar chuckled brightly when asked if lawn grubs, commonly called white grubs, play a positive part in a lawns ecosystem. Everybody says grubs eat the grass roots, he said, but theres more to them than that. White grubs are eating the accumulated thatch and organic matter thats in the top inch of the soil profile.

Theyre sort of natures de-thatchers, he added. But the problem is, theyre eating that thatch, they do eat the roots and the crowns , which kills the plant.

Its when these de-thatcher populations grow out of control that the dreaded lawn damage takes place.

Can I Apply Grubex And Fertilizer At The Same Time

Apply the two products simultaneously, but its better to apply fertilizer when you reseed your lawn or put down new sod and make the application of GrubEx separately.

Do lawn repair and the fertilizing either in the autumn or in the early springtime.

Follow these steps:

  • Use a rake to remove dead grass.
  • For very thick thatch, scrape it off with a spade.
  • Compost or otherwise dispose of the dead grass.
  • Use an aerator to loosen and aerate the soil.
  • Be sure to get the whole area by walking the machine across your lawn, just like a mower.
  • Good aeration will help your subsequent application of GrubEx to soak in better.
  • Choose your grass seed carefully to be sure of matching your existing lawn.
  • Follow packaging instructions to broadcast the right amount of seed to cover your square footage correctly.
  • Broadcast the seed over the damaged areas and rake lightly to incorporate it into the surface of the soil.
  • Toss out straw lightly to help keep the seed in place and protect it against birds.
  • Water deeply, and be sure to keep the soil moist until the grass has sprouted and become established.
  • Gradually back off watering as the grass matures.
  • When it is 6 inches high, walk on and mow it.
  • Once the grass has matured, youll want to apply some fertilizer.
  • If its late spring, apply GrubEx at the same time if you wish.
  • Be sure to use straight fertilizer containing no other ingredients.
  • Do this just before a scheduled watering.

Use a drop spreader, and be sure to cover the entire lawn.

The Right Dose Of Grub Killer

It is recommended to treat each 1,000 square feet of lawn with 2.87 pounds of grub killer once a year. In applying the grub killer, it is ideal to use a drop or rotary spreader, as this can evenly spread the granular pesticide across your lawn.

Once the grub killer is evenly applied, you should water your lawn up to a depth of 1/2 inch. This is typically equivalent to 30 minutes of watering. Grubex will not be activated unless it is watered in. As soon as your lawn dries, it is already safe for your pets and family to step on your grass.

When you are able to apply the grub killer correctly, you do not have to use additional and excessive amounts of insecticides on your lawn. If you put in excessive amounts of insecticide, it can cause the grubs to become immune to the treatment.

How Do I Treat For Grubs In My Lawn

After fertilizer and grass seed, grub control products are typically the most prominently displayed and commonly stocked lawn care product at garden centers. For many homeowners, grub control products are an important part of the annual lawn care routine.

More often than not, people are surprised at how much there is to learn about grubs, and how many misconceptions there are about them and the damage they can do to lawns. This blog, accompanying a live video we produced in the field, addresses some of the common questions we get at the UNH Extension Infoline about grubs.

How Often Should You Apply Grub Control

How often you should apply grub control really depends on the area you live. You shouldnt need to apply grub control more than once a year if you apply it at the right time. However, if you need to apply grub control every year depends on how prevalent grubs are in your area.

If you didnt see any grubs the year before, then chances are you dont need grub control this year. However, some areas simply get hit by grubs year after year. If you live in one of these areas, youll need to apply grub control every year to keep things under control.

Keep an eye on your lawn year after year, and apply grub control as needed. If you notice an uptick in grubs on years that you dont apply grub control, its probably a good idea to add it as a regular part of your yearly routine.

Can You Apply Grubex Before It Rains

GrubEx is best applied before it rains because the water from the downpour will wash the insecticide into the soil. Grubs live about 2 inches into the soil and this is where you need the treatment to reach.

The best practice is to put down grub control granules or dust and then water down the lawn to ensure the treatment enters the root zone and kills grubs that are cutting the roots of your grass.

You can also time to apply the grub killer just before it rains, but first, make sure it is forecast to rain in your area in the next few hours.

Pro tip:

I recommend mowing first before applying GrubEx or any other grub killer to ensure most of the pesticide penetrates down into the soil to kill grubs that are damaging your grass.
