You may think youre only removing the top layer of grass, but its better to be safe before unearthing a power or gas line.

For example, if youre changing the grade enough to require a retaining wall, you probably need a permit.
Make Sure You Have Permission

Check with utility companies and your local council to make sure there are no cables under your garden that will be disrupted, and whether the work you are planning requires planning permission.

Filling Big Dips In Your Lumpy Lawn
For holes in the lawn, my advice would be to use a sharp knife of a lawn edger to remove the turf. Make sure you have a good 2-3 cm of soil on the back of your turf and set it to one side. Fill the hole with soil from elsewhere in the garden. If you use imported topsoil youll find that the grass will always look different where youve made the repair. Be sure to press the new topsoil down firmly. You dont want it to settle and sink in the next few weeks!
Replace the turf carefully, ensuring that it is nice and level. Keep it well watered for 3-4 weeks while the grasses regrow their roots.

Levelling A Sloped Lawn By Adding A Topsoil Mix To The Low Points
Just to let you know, this is the most costly option. The first thing youll need to do is edge off the area where you want the borders to be. A full explanation on edging ideas is outside the scope of this article but you could use wooden planks, metal, plastic or even rubber edging specifically designed for the job.
Whichever material you choose, youll want to run the border around the outside making sure the lowest part of the area is level with the highest part of the area.
Once thats done, you now have your levelled area to fill with topsoil.
So, whats the best and most cost-effective top soil mix to fill this area?
There are 3 options here Peat-free Compost, top soil, or sand/soil mix 70/30.
Heres what I recommend:
Start by filling the area over the top of the old grass with peat-free compost until it is approximately 1/2 inch from the top of the edging border, then use top soil to fill it to the top.
If possible, youll want to run a long piece of wood along the top to get it as perfectly level as possible.
Youll also need to tread down the compost and top soil with each layer so that its compact and doesnt drop down after the seed has grown.

This is a super cheap way of spreading your levelling mixture. In fact you probably already have a stiff brush and if you dont, youll find theyre really cheap at almost any hardware store.
You must make sure the bristles are stiff though because if you buy a soft broom the bristles will just go over the mix and it wont spread properly.

There are many reasons why your lawn might not be level. And it could be that depressions appear over time but were once level. And understanding this root cause will help avoid changes in the future.
For example, it could be caused by drainage issues or even broken water pipes under the ground. If you feel this is the case, you should definitely investigate further but I cant tell you how to do that.
