Taking Andersons Starter Fertilizer as the example again, how many pounds will I need for my Zone 1, which is 3,000 ft²?
Take the pounds of the fertilizer bag and divide that by the square foot coverage .
50 / 12.5 = 4 lbs. of fertilizer per 1,000 ft²4 lbs. x 3,000 ft² = 12 lbs.
So in my example, Id need 12 lbs. of Andersons Starter Fertilizer for my Zone 1. In the next section, well break down how many pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 ft² were applying.

Suppose you have a new yard that is 0.23 acres that you want to plant Sun & Shade Mix.
Calculate Thousands of sq. ft.:

Calculate Grass Seed Quantity

The simplest area calculations are for squares and rectangles.
To find the area of a rectangle multiply its height by its width.
For a square you only need to find the length of one of the sides and then multiply this by itself to find the area. This is the same as saying length2 or length squared.

With a circular shaped lawn you will need to calculate the radius of the space. To work out the radius, simply measure the full width of the circle and then divide it by 2.
You will now multiply the radius by itself.
Therefore, if the circle was going to be 10 metres wide, the radius would be 5 metres and you would then multiply that by itself. 5 x 5 = 25 metres.
Finally, you will multiply this number by pi, which is 3.14.
5 metres x 5 = 25 metres. 25 metres x 3.14 = 78.5.
You would need to purchase 79 rolls of turf to fully cover this circle shaped lawn.

Obviously the grass variety will greatly affect the amount of seed youll need per square foot but what Im talking about here doesnt have anything to do with grass cultivar Im talking about the type of seed itself. If its a seed only product with no fillers, coatings, inert material, or seed starter blend then you will apply a much smaller amount to your property than otherwise.
In many cases seed bags contain inert material to help the seed establish. Coatings on the seeds are usually meant to help retain moisture and can help with keeping germination rates high. These coatings can also help seeds to germinate faster as they are less likely to dry out on the ground.
Some other bags will contain filler material mixed in so that when you sow the seed it is mixed up in a seed starting mix of soil, peat moss, or some other growing medium. These materials take up space and weight and although they can help ensure seed to soil contact, necessary for germination, they add to the cost and bulk of your seed.
There are calculators online like this one from Lowes that can help you figure out how much grass seed you need and of course you could always eyeball it using the above chart as a guideline but figuring out the correct amount shouldnt be particularly difficult either.
