Determining The Size Of Area

How much does a yard of concrete cover | Concrete coverage in square feet per yard

Step 1: Inspect the Area

The first piece of information you need to know is the shape and dimensions of your lawn, particularly the width and length. You will want to measure and multiply the area length times the width in feet until the square footage is 1,000 sq. ft. and mark off this area with the help of a marking tool like washable paint or objects to distinguish the treatment areas border line.

Step 2: Convert Measurements

If your yard is rectangular or square, measure the length and width then multiply together . For example, if your yard has a length of 10 feet and width of 8 feet, you would multiply 10 by 8 to get 80 square feet.

Be aware for triangle shaped lawns, you will measure the length and width, multiply together, then divide by two .

If your lawn is a not a perfect rectangle, break the lawn into different sections to measure more easily, then add measurements together to get the area’s total square footage.

For treatment areas with flowerbeds and other obstructions in the yard you will measure the square footage of the object and subtract from your yards total square footage.

Example, you have a property that is 12,000 sq. ft. and in the middle you have a landscape bed with a length of 3 feet and width of 2 feet. You will multiply 3 by 2 to get 6 feet, then subtract from your yard total.

  • 3 ft. X 2 ft. = 6 sq. ft.
  • 12,000 sq. ft. – 6 sq. ft. = 11,994 sq. ft.

Therefore, you will treat an area with 11,994 sq. ft.

Seeding Grass How Much Seed Do I Need

When creating a lawn, there are basically two options, either lay sod or plant grass from seed. There are advantages to each method. Laying sod provides an instant lawn that can be installed in nearly any season, quickly eliminating muddy, unattractive yards.

Sod is fast to lay down and is available in several varieties. All this convenience comes with a substantial price tag, though. On average, a homeowner spends almost $2,000 to sod a new yard. If you are considering this option, try our sod calculator to figure an estimate for your project.

Grass seed is a cost-effective alternative to sod and offers a few other advantages as well. There are many more varieties of seed available than varieties of sod. And, planting seed allows the grass to establish itself directly in the environment in which it will live.

The drawback, of course, is that seed takes time to grow and must be planted at the proper time of year to be successful. This can mean a long wait until you have grass to mow. Grass seed makes up for it in cost savings, though, and is the best alternative for filling in bare spots in existing lawns. Benefits Of Aerating Lawn

Aerating stimulates root growth and creates a thicker, healthier lawn that is more resistant to drought and extreme temperatures. Soil compaction leads to bare patches and brown grass. Aeration opens the soil, providing better water and nutrient absorption at the roots.

Pros and cons of lawn aeration

Pros
  • Makes the lawn more resistant to insects and disease.
  • Core aeration leaves unsightly plugs on the lawn.
  • Aeration machines may hit sprinkler heads or buried irrigation lines.
  • Makes the lawn more vulnerable to weeds if performed at the wrong time of year.
  • Increases dryness if the lawn isn’t watered enough afterward.

How Many Gallons Of Water Is Needed To Water A Lawn That Is 5000 Sq Ft

Scotts 14.06

I understand it depends on many parameters. But I thought I ask anyway. We have a lawn that is around 5000 sq ft with st. augustine grass in Austin, TX.

What is typical watering schedule of this lawn will need in gallons per month?

I believe I am adding around 5000-6000 gallons per month in a summer month .What I am wondering is it too much, too less or what.

Thanks

If you had zero precipitation during the month , and wanted to give your grass an inch of water a week, lets round and say you give it 4 inches of water a month.5000 sq ft * 1/3 ft = 1666.66 cuft = 12,468 gallons of water.

A quick search for average rainfall in Austin gives around 4 inches in June, and close to 2 inches for both July and August. This would give you 0 additional watering required in June, and around 6,234 gallons during July and August.

How To Calculate Lawn Fertilizer Per 1000 Square Feet

  • Nitrogen percentage ÷ 100
  • n
  • The formula looks like this if I want to apply 1 pound of Nitrogen on my 5,000 sq ft lawn and using Milorganite fertilizer as a guide:

Desired Nitrogen weight ÷ x your lawns square feet ÷ 1,000

1 ÷ x 5,000 ÷ 1,000 = 83.3 pounds of total Milorganite fertilizer to cover my 5,000 square feet lawn or about 2.5 total bags of the 32 pounds Milorganite nitrogen fertilizer.

This can be used for N-P-K. Its suggested to get a soil test at the beginning of each season

How Much Should Aeration And Overseeding Cost

    4.6/5aerationoverseedingaerationaerateaerateoverseed

Similarly, it is asked, how much does aeration and overseeding cost?

A good rule of thumb is to charge for aeration, overseeding and fertilization about twice what you’d charge for aeration alone, so, if you charge $75 to aerate a lawn smaller than 5,000 square feet, you’ll charge $150 to aerate, overseed and fertilize that same lawn.

Similarly, how much does seeding a lawn cost? Lawn Seeding Labor CostsUnlike sod, it’s not a simple installation project. As such, landscapers have a right to charge what they deem is fair. For small patch jobs, we have seen reseeding labor costs range from $50 to $250. If you’re seeding an entire lawn, the labor cost alone could exceed $600.

Additionally, is aeration overseeding worth it?

Why Aeration Is Worth ItAeration loosens compacted soil. And while grass might not be able to thrive in compacted soil, weeds can. Another reason to aerate: it makes lawn treatments like fertilization and reseeding more effective.

How much does it cost to aerate 1 acre?

Aeration Cost Per AcreAn acre is 43,560 square feet. One lawn care company in Billings, Montana said they would charge $60 for every 5,000 square feet. However, many companies won’t price by the square foot for such a large space. Expect to pay $480 to $650 for an acre of aeration.

How Many Bags Of Lime Do You Need Per Acre

How much lime to use all depends on that little ph test. If your lawn has a very low ph balance, you can apply as much as 50 pounds of lime per 1,000 square feet of lawn at a time. Of course, if your soil levels are closer to ideal, you can add less lime.

So, lets do the math for a one-acre yard. One acre is 43,560 square feet. Divide that by 1,000, then multiply by the 50 pounds of lime. The total amount of lime per acre would be 2,178 pounds.

If your yard needs more than 50 pounds of lime per 1,000 square feet, divide it into two applications. Generally, one application should be done in the spring and the other in the fall.

    S To Estimate Soil Volume

How to Calculate Land Area || How many Square yard in 1000 Square feet Plot || Conversion in Marla

Adding soil can be a substantial investment in time and money. To minimize work and expense, follow these instructions for getting the right amount of soil that you need.

    1. Using a tape measure, measure the length and width of the area you want to fill. Its best to write these numbers down.

    2. If the space is complex, break the area into smaller, regularly shaped sections, like in the diagram below. Then measure each section separately.

    3. Decide on the depth of the new soil that you want. For refreshing gardens, usually, 3-6 inches of new soil is sufficient. If you have a hard border or a raised bed, measure the depth of the partition. Remember that soil will settle, so be a little generous with this measurement.

    4. By far, the easiest way to calculate quantities is to use the soil calculator above! Enter your measurements, hit calculate, and its all worked out for you: cubic feet, yards, even the number of bags. And metric too.

Sometimes topsoil and compost are sold by weight, which varies depending on what the material is. In the US, a 40-pound bag measures between 0.5 and 0.75 cubic feet. The Soil Calculator bag estimator is based on 0.75 cubic feet per bag.

How Much Topsoil Do You Need

When you are creating or refreshing a garden or other landscape feature, often you want to add new topsoil to the area. And, in the case of new raised beds, you might need enough new soil to fill your new box completely.

New soil gives your plants the nutrients, air circulation, and water drainage that they require to thrive.

To achieve that balance, its a good idea to mix soil, compost, and potting blends for the best plant growth. Generally, a good proportion is 60% topsoil, 30% compost, and 10% potting mix.

You may also need fill dirt for landscaping projects and hardscapes, which is used to fill in large volumes.

How To Calculate The Amount Of Lime To Use

If you have your soil testing professional conducted you can refer to their liming recommendations based on the results to know how much to apply to your area.

If you are calculating the amount of lime for a large area, you will determine how much lime to use per acre of land. If you need to lime a small area, you can calculate the amount of lime per square foot.

Youre probably liming a large area, unless you wish to treat a very small garden plot. Use pelletized lime for large applications because it is easier to work with. Here, approximately, is how much limestone youll need to raise 1.0 pH level for every 1,000 square feet for the different soil types:

    Will Lime Kill Grubs

Applying lime to your lawn will not kill grubs directly but it may make your lawn less appealing to them.

Its like if you have a choice between breathing beautiful fresh clean air or air that is tainted by chemicals, any person with common sense would go towards the clean air.

If you do decide to apply lime as a deterrent to grubs another deterrent you could use would be to plant some trees that would provide some shade to your lawn as grubs dont like that.

However, if you are adding trees for shade you must be careful to not overdo it as whilst grubs dont like shade its also not the best thing in the world for growing a beautiful, healthy, lush, green lawn.

    Calibrate Your Fertilizer Equipment

Calibrate or test your spreader equipment each spring to ensure it is operating properly. Dont rely only on the manufacturer settings provided on the fertilizer bag. How fast you walk affects the amount of fertilizer applied from a push spreader.

    Materials Needed

    1. Spread out the sheet of plastic on a flat surface outdoors, perhaps your driveway.2. Use the tape measure to measure the length and width of the plastic surface.3. Determine the square footage of this surface by multiplying the length times the width. Example: 20 x 30 sheet = 600 square feet.4. Fill the spreaders hopper with fertilizer.5. Many fertilizer bags will indicate what setting to use for a particular brand of spreader. Use this as the starting setting. If unknown, select a setting near the middle of its range.6. Weigh the empty container. This will be the tare weight. Example: 2oz.7. Begin applying the fertilizer over the plastic sheet walking at your normal rate.8. When the entire area of the plastic has been covered, stop, carefully gather all the fertilizer from the sheet and place it in the empty container.9. Weigh this container. Record the weight and subtract the tare weight from this figure. The net result is the amount of fertilizer applied to that square footage. Is the amount of fertilizer collected the correct amount for this size area? If not, change the setting and redo the steps.

    Can Lime Burn The Lawn

Lime for your lawn is a chemical and there are many different types you could use for your lawn and there are also many different types you should not use for your lawn.

As long as you use a lime that is designed for putting on lawns there is very little risk that you will burn it.

If you apply lime around some other plants it could be harmful but applying it on a grass lawn will not burn it.

Applying lime to your lawn is not something I would recommend unless you really know what you are doing so if you are unsure you should contact an expert lawn care professional to first test the pH to assess if it needs lime and then to actually apply it in the correct dose.

Important Factors For Calculating How Much Limestone Youll Need

The first thing you should do is measure the current pH level of your soil. If you plan to apply lime to your yard or garden, a do-it-yourself pH test from a hardware store will do the trick. If youre treating several acres of fields, having the soil professionally tested may be helpful. You should also know what pH level your soil should be a level between 6.0 and 7.0.

The size of the area to be limed is another important factor. You may be liming many acres of farmland or a very small patch of garden. The size of the area will help determine which form of limestone to use. You can use either powdered or pelletized limestone. The two forms work the same, except that pelletized limestone is powdered lime mixed with an binder to form pellets, and is typically cleaner and lest dusty to handle.

The texture of your soil is one last thing to consider. The denser the soil, the more lime you will need. The amount of limestone you use will depend on three basic soil types: sand, loam and clay.

Once you have determined these factors, you can calculate an estimate of the amount of lime youll need.
