How To Cut Diagonal Lines On Your Lawn

Cutting diagonal lines into your lawn is simple and can bring interest and appeal to your garden. Proper mowing practices are essential for a healthy lawn. Healthy lawns will tolerate moisture fluctuations better, have fewer weeds and appear thicker. When your lawn is strong and lush, patterns will show up more readily. You can create a lined pattern on your lawn by mowing on a diagonal, overlapping slightly and changing directions each time you complete a line.

1

Prepare your lawn by clearing away any rocks, toys or other debris. Use caution when operating your mower, making certain all safety shields are in place and operational. Make sure your power or push mower’s blade is sharp so that you will not damage your grass. Mow your lawn wearing sturdy shoes with good traction.

2

Divide your lawn into sections. If you have lawns in both the front and back of your home, you can create diagonal lines in each area separately. Begin in your first section by mowing around the entire perimeter of the lawn.

3

Start in one corner of your lawn, facing toward the center of the lawn. Position your mower at a 45-degree angle. Be careful when making your first line and strive for as straight a line as possible. Push the mower forward slowly until you reach the end of that line on the other side. Continue to push the mower off of the lawn to avoid turning lines. This first line will form the basis for your diagonal lawn design.

How To Stripe Your Lawn

ARTIFICIAL GRASS CHANDLER ARIZONA

A basic striping technique is to mow around the perimeter of your lawn and then turn making parallel lines. However, one of the easiest ways to stripe your lawn is with a lawn striper kit. You can also use a tow-behind or push lawn mower roller, sometimes called a yard roller. A tow-behind yard roller attaches to your riding lawn mower, lawn tractor or garden tractor.

Mow as often as needed to keep the grass 2 1/2 to 4 inches tall. When you mow, dont remove more than 1/3 the height of your grass. Cutting grass too short can kill it or weaken it, leaving it more susceptible to weeds. For a dramatic mowing pattern, mow on a higher setting to keep your grass on the tall side. Tall blades are softer than short ones and bend more easily. Mowing at a higher setting, even if its only one-half inch, can make a difference in the contrast between the grass striping.

After you use a lawn striper kit to mow in the same pattern for a couple of weeks, alternate between mowing patterns. You dont want the blades of grass to always bend in the same direction. If youve been using a mowing pattern that runs north to south, change it the next time you mow. Try one of the patterns in the steps below.

Striping In A Wave Pattern

1. Cut the perimeter of your lawn .2. Mow your first stripe, for a smooth wave pattern attempt to keep turns subtle and consistent throughout the design. Remember to keep a line of sight such as a tree, post, or flag pole as reference points to help with alignment.3. Continue to align stripes paralleled to the first.

It’s All About Direction

The direction that the grass is bent determines the light- or dark-colored stripe. When the blades of grass are bent away from you.the grass appears lighter in color because the light is reflecting off of the wide, lengthy part of the blade. When the blades of grass are bent towards you, the grass appears darker as you are looking more of the tips of the blades and the shadows under the grass. So cutting a lawn in an opposing pattern provides the most contrasting stripe effect. Interestingly, as the color of the stripe is dependent upon what direction you are looking at it from, a light-colored stripe will appear dark if you view it from the opposing direction.

Everything You Need To Know About Lawn Striping

Nov 27, 2019 | Lawn Care Tips

Dont you just love to look at the lawn striping in professional baseball stadiums? Its so green and lush. Checkerboards, an arch, curves, waves, a crown, a flag, diagonals and a mix of directional grass-art have overtaken the fields of MLB stadiums. It is beautiful and almost hypnotic to enjoy. Fortunately for lawn care enthusiasts, its easier than you think.

Grass Types Mowing Height Matter

Not all grass is created equal when it comes to striping, and your technique must vary with the seasons. The grasses that take to striping the best are cool-season varieties such as fine fescue and Kentucky bluegrass. They have long, flexible blades that easily bend in the direction of the lawn roller. Warm-season grasses such as St. Augustine have more rigid blades that spring back from the lawn roller. If your lawn consists of the stiffer warm-season kind, its more likely to bed and lie flat in the spring and fall, when the temperatures are a little lower. In the peak of the summer heat, those grass blades are less likely to lay how you want them. Keep in mind that cool-season grasses thrive best in spring and early fall. Youâre also likely to get the best results from those varieties when the temperatures arenât soaring into their July and August peaks.

Mowing height is another major factor in lawn striping. Experts say never mow your lawn too closely, or you risk the health of the grass. Grass that has been scalped also tends to be less green. If you want to stripe your lawn, you have another reason to let it grow a little longer. The longer the blades of grass, the more distinct your stripes will be. Thatâs because there is more grass blade to lay in one direction and reflect light. Generally, you should keep your lawn between 2.5 to 4 inches long if you want that fancy design.

Aiming In Windy Conditions

One of the biggest variables to your line after the condition of the green is the wind. Windy conditions are tricky as any change in direction, or strength can have a big impact on the path of the bowl.

In a head wind it will slow your bowl, making it act like its on a heavy green. This will tighten the line required.

In a tailwind it can speed your bowl up making it run faster, and curving more.

Whilst there are bowls designed to help with the effects of the wind, you will have to adjust your line accordingly to compensate for a change in the wind.

Best Grass Types For Lawn Striping

How to Stripe Your Lawn

Because not all grass is created equally, some grass types stripe better than others. Do an experiment once. Take a look at the striping at a baseball field in the south like Texas or Florida and compare it to the lawn striping at a baseball field in the north like Milwaukee or Minnesota. You will notice that the lawn striping at the ballparks in the north are much nicer than the ballparks on the south. Why? Well, the grass down south are more warm season grass types like Bermuda and they have more of a stem than a blade. It doesn’t lay down as nice. On the flip side, the grass in the north is more of a cool season grass like fescue, which has more blade then stem and lays down much nicer.

Pointing The Stripes And Sun Position

Next, mow your lawn. But before you do that, where is the sun located and what is the best view for your stripes? You see, the other secret here is that in order to see the stripes, the sun has to be mostly behind you. If the sun is directly in front of you, the stripes will be washed out but when its behind you, they will come to light vividly.

So before you go and mow, think about the best angle at which to mow so the stripes are most visible when the sun is behind you. In other words, How do you point the stripes so everyone can see them?

In this video, I show you how to use a property map to determine the angle of the sun and where best to point your stripes. Personally, I like to be able to see them as I drive up into my driveway after work. Depending on how your yard is shaped, and what direction your house faces, you may have other optimum stripe positions that you can enjoy.

Regular Mowers Wont Cut It

You donât have to go out and buy an expensive new lawn mower, but you do need to know what youâre up against. Major League Baseball field crews dont use typical household mowers. MLB literally wrote the book on lawn striping, and according to the official manual, rotary push lawnmowers only work on residential lawns. At the pro baseball field, itâs most likely a reel mower. âReel mowers are more specialized and are used on higher maintenance facilities like golf courses and athletic fields. These mowers require additional training to operate. Reel mowers are used to provide better quality cuts and allows very low cutting heights,â the manual says.

How Do You Create Stripes

You now know what products you need to create lawn stripes, and the process for making it happen, but what about the actual result? How are the defining stripes formed?

When you attach a roller to the back of your lawnmower, youre allowing the lawn to be pushed in a different direction to the grass on either side of that strip. Turfgrass species have a darker and lighter side, so the stripes are all in the lighting. With the grass on an angle, it lets off a darker colour than if you had angled it the opposite way.

How To Mow Straight Lines

Begin by mowing the perimeter around the property . Next, mow in opposing directions through the remaining portion of the property . Take care when turning at the end of each row to prevent turf damage. A simple Y type turn at the end of each row will reduce the chance of turf damage while setting the mower up for the next row to be mowed. Now, travel perpendicular to the direction of the original mowing pattern. Finish the job by mowing the perimeter again. Going over the perimeter once again will remove any stripe-pattern irregularities left from turning at the end of each row and deliver a clean, finished look.

How To Mow Stripes In Your Lawn

Start by mowing the edge of the lawn as close as you can manage use a strimmer for any bits you cant reach.

Start from the left and work up and down the space using the straight edge as a guideline.

With each turn, line the mower up with the previous stripe and overlap slightly to avoid any gaps.

If you have a round or oddly-shaped lawn, create one stripe in the middle to guide you or work from a focal feature.

Make sure you empty the clippings as often as possible, as any stray clumps will ruin the effect and make the grass look untidy.

Its vital that you mix up the pattern and direction of the stripes each time you mow though, to avoid ruts in the ground and too much damage to the grass.

What Can Affect What Aiming Point To Choose

  • Availability of point to choose. If you are lucky enough to play on a perfect green there may not be any marks to use. The same is if the bank has no cuts or scratches. Use what you have around you instead
  • Where the mat has been placed – if a game is one sided a common tactic is to move the mat up. This will make the angles created by your aiming points different, so you will need to adjust accordingly
  • How many players are in the head – similar to the point on availability above. If you play skip you will find everyone else at the other end blocking the bank and whats behind it.

When To Change Aiming Point

At some point over a game you will probably have to change your aiming point. The most common reasons are:

  • Change in the conditions – this can be anything from a rain shower, to the great British evening dew. This will impact on your lines and lengths so its best to stay alert to any signs of change. This is why its best to observe your teammates and opponents, and get familiar with their lines to spot small changes
  • Missing your line 2-3 times in a row – if youre finding your shots are going wide too often you will have to reassess your marks. This could be a sign of environmental change as above, or that your point was just slightly off
  • The mat has been moved – if the mat has been moved up you will have to change aiming points immediately. At this point in a game it is about who can adjust their game the quickest

So there you have it. I hope our introduction to aiming points has helped open some new ideas for you.

As always, get out on the practice greens and give it a go! See if it works for you.
