How Much Torque Does A Lawn Mower Have

While lawn mower power used to be measured in horsepower, looking at the torque in a lawn mower may just be a more accurate measurement of how powerful it is.

One horsepower is equal to 33,000 foot-pounds/minute, but what exactly is torque? As opposed to horsepower, which only calculates how much work the engine can produce, torque instead measures how much power is involved in turning the mowers rotary blades. When youre mowing the lawn, the blades rotate and twist to cut the blades of grass. The amount of power used to make that happen is known as the torque, and this number is especially important in a lawn mower that youll have to walk behind and push to cut your grass.

Torque varies a lot from one lawn mower to another. That being said, you can expect most lawn mowers to produce 4-9 ft-lbs of torque. Heavy duty mowers tend to produce more torque making them more appropriate for larger yards with grass that is tall and thick.

How Often Should You Get Your Lawn Mowed

You should have your lawn care company mow your lawn at least once per week during the growing season. If you have time to get a second mow in, particularly during the peak growing season like mid-to-late spring, that would be optimal. Set the desired height on your mower and try to never cut off more than one-third of the grass at one time.

Other questions to ask yourself:

  • What is my grass type?
  • What is the optimal height for that grass type?
  • How long does it take to mow my yard?
  • Can I schedule 1-2 days per week to mow?

Prep The Mower For Storage

For a Gas-Powered Mower: Remove or Stabilize the FuelSimply leaving fuel in the tank all winter can wreak havoc on your mowers engine. Water from condensation can combine with ethanol in the gas, causing clogs, corrosion, and other problems throughout the fuel system. Come springtime, you could be in for a professional carburetor cleaning to the tune of $75 to $100.

If you keep your mower in the basement during the winter, you should remove the fuel regardless of how much is left because storing it inside could be a fire hazard. If theres only a little fuel left after the last mow of the season, your best bet is to run the tank dry. If the tank is full or nearly full, disconnect the fuel line at the carburetor and drain the remaining gas into a gasoline storage container.

If you store the mower in a garage or shed, its wise to fill the tank with gas and add stabilizeror even better, use prepackaged gas that has stabilizer already added. For good measure, run the mower for a few minutes so that the stabilized fuel can work its way through the carburetor.

For an Electric Mower: Remove the BatteryRemove the battery or batteries and store them inside your home to minimize temperature fluctuation. Extreme temperatures can shorten the life span of battery cells and cause them to fail prematurely. Most batteries do best when stored between 40° and 80° F.

Lawn Care Costs Per Acre

Just like with mowing, more significant lawn care such as seeding, weed control, fertilization, and aeration is typically priced per acre, with many companies performing more than one of these services at a time. Lawn care costs range widely due to the variety of services that may be needed, and they may include one or more services, such as seeding with fertilization or aeration. Find Out The Track Record

Ask how long a lawn care provider has been in business. What level of experience and education does the person or a providers staff have? Also, is the provider properly licensed and insured?

Unfortunately, some providers are fly-by-night operators that havent been in business very long and are interested only in taking your money, not in providing top-notch service. As noted by MarketWatch, providing lawn care requires little more than some equipment and a business license. Almost no training is required.

Is There Anything Else Your Lawn Will Need Outside Of Mowing

While you have a lawn mowing service at your home working on your lawn, you might call on them to provide you with some other services. These services may include:

  • Weed whacking
  • Fertilizing
  • Mulching

You dont have to sign up for any of these services if you dont want to. But most lawn cutting services will offer them to you if you think they would help make your lawn and landscaping look their best.

Just be prepared to pay a little extra for each additional service that you tack on top of lawn mowing. Every company charges different prices for these kinds of lawn services.

Is The Lawnmower Repair Specialist Reputable

MOWING GRASS! (How Much Do We Charge?)

One of the best places to start your search is online. Websites such as HomeGuide have amassed millions of reviews from homeowners so you can make an educated decison quickly. In addition, Jones recommends asking friends, neighbors, coworkers and others for referrals to lawnmower repair specialists in your area. You shouldnt base your decision solely on a lawnmower repair specialists nice-looking website.

I know there more than a few pop up repair guys who may build a great website but dont really provide value for what they charge, Jones says.

While youre shopping around online, dont put all your trust in reviews.

Jones says hes got firsthand knowledge of bogus reviews both positive and negative of lawnmower repair specialists. He says hes been approached by online marketers offering to post good reviews of his service . Jones says hes also been the victim of negative reviews, some whipped up by competitors and others by keyboard-warrior customers who would rather lambast me in a public forum rather than resolve an issue.

Dont Forget To Price Special Services And Materials Differently

Special services like mowing, mulching, and weed control and fertilization application should be priced accordingly, rather than lumped into one cost.

Jason explains that these are actually very different services because they require different types of labor.

Weed control and fertilization, for example, is typically a one-person operation, so your labor is cut downand that one person can actually generate a lot more revenue than one person can mowing, he explains.

But there are expenses in the weed control: the actual fertilizer, weed control product, labor, and drive timeall those things are factors.

The main thing Im concerned with is how big the actual yard is, and the actual amount of turf that Im going to be applying the fertilizer or herbicide to. The bigger the yard, the more of the product Im using. Thats my biggest expense, Jason explains.

So, Im pricing strictly based on the square footage. I need to get an accurate measurement of the square footage of the lawn so that I know how to price it. Then I use a pricing chart that shows square footage from 2,000 square feet all the way up to 30,000 square feet.

I can then look at my pricing chart and give them a price quickly. So as the square footage goes up, the price per square foot actually goes down.

Buying A Lawn Mower And Diy

How Big Is Your Lawn

Outside of considering your homes location when trying to answer the question, What is the going rate for lawn mowing?, a lawn care service will also consider the size of your lawn.

The $20 to $40 price range that we mentioned a moment ago applies to small- and medium-sized residential lawns. But it doesnt always apply to lawns that are more than an acre or even several acres.

The larger that your lawn is, the more than youre going to have to pay a lawn care service to cut it for you. Its going to take more manpower, more equipment, and more gasoline for them to mow your lawn, which will lead to you paying higher prices.

What To Ask When Hiring A Lawn Mowing Company

When speaking with a lawn mowing service you should consider asking the following questions:

  • How long will it take you?
  • What are your hourly rates?
  • Do you provide any additional services?
  • Do you provide written quotes?
  • Can I review your references?

In order to receive the most accurate quote, provide as much detail as possible, ask questions and have the job inspected.

How Powerful Should My Lawn Mower Be

Look for a mower with at least 14-16 hp and a wide mowing deck at least 38 inches to get your lawn work done quickly. Yards larger than three acres are best handled by a larger zero-turn rider or a garden tractor. Look for models that have at least 18hp engines and mowing decks in the 44-54 inch range.

How Much It Costs To Mow Your Own Lawn

What Do We ACTUALLY Charge For Mowing? Answering Your FAQ!

At the very least, your lawn needs to be mowed. If you choose to do it yourself, youll need a lawnmower, which can range in price from less than $100 for a steel-blade push mower to $500 to $1,000 for a gas-powered push mower or rider. You can also get a basic smart lawn mower like the Robomow for $699, which uses GPS to mow the lawn by itselfwhich sounds dreamy, although youll have to set up perimeters and it might not do so well on tricky landscapes containing rocks or depressions.

If you choose a gas model, youll also need to shell out for fuel. According to the University of Vermont Extension Department of Plant and Soil Services, each year a family with one-third of an acre of lawn will use an average of 5 gallons of gas for mowing and trimming. With gas currently sitting at about $2.25, thats about $11.25 per year on average.

How Hp Applies To A Lawn Mower

As mentioned earlier, power for push mowers is generally measured in torque, but riding lawn mowers still measure power in horsepower. If youre trying to replace a push mower with a riding lawn mower, it can be difficult to do only because there is no accurate way to compare the two. That being said, you can get a general idea of how to compare horsepower to horsepower by following these steps:

  • Multiply the torque rating of the lawn mower by the RPMs.
  • Take that number and divide it by 5,250.

This is not exactly a scientific way to find out what your HP should be when you buy your next lawn mower, but its a good starting point.

What Services You Want

All companies work with a different pricing structure. Some provide comprehensive packages that include landscaping and lawn care. Others charge a certain rate for mowing that’s dependent on the size and type of lawn. Then, they offer other packages and add-on services for more advanced lawn care.

Here are some optional services that might drive up the cost of lawn care:

  • Weeding
  • Planting flowers or adding flower beds
  • Adding sod or grass
  • Treating grass or lawns for growth or health
  • Caring for trees or other plants on a regular basis

If you want to add some of these types of services, it might also limit which companies you can deal with. Depending on your location, someone may need to be licensed to provide some of these services. And even if that’s not the case, not everyone who mows lawns is qualified to treat unhealthy trees or plan out flower beds for optimal curb appeal.

Monthly Lawn Service Cost

If you contract for a monthly service, you may get lower rates than you would for a one-time service. Keep in mind that monthly service plans are only for weekly or biweekly mows and service. Most companies do not offer plans with three-week or monthly mows. Most monthly service plans are around $200 to $250 a month for a 3,000 to 5,000-square-foot lawn. Costs are higher or lower for differently sized yards.

Dont Mow More Than One

Tips for mowing a wet lawn

Follow the one-third rule and never mow more than 1/3 of the grass blade off at a time. Be sure to read all the details in my 1/3 grass cutting rule post. Mowing an overgrown lawn will cut off too much grass at once, shocking and stressing the plant. This can leave the lawn looking sick . It will quickly lose the green color, and start to take on a yellow/brown haze on the top.

Mowing frequently helps promote growth and tillering. It also allows for proper mulching. You can confidently mulch and return the grass clippings back into your lawn and soil with sharp mower blades and frequent mowing. Mow too much

Dull mower blades will never get a clean cut and almost always damage the plant. The tips will quickly become brown, causing a hazy look to your turf. Full mower blades also tear the grass blades which promotes lawn fungus and diseases
