Unlike fescue, bermuda grass grows aggressively in a lateral direction across the ground, earning it the nickname âwire grassâ to many in our area. For homeowners in warmer areas, this makes bermuda desirable because an established bermuda lawn doesnât need to be seeded and continually fills in its own damaged or bare areas. In RVA, where a fescue lawn is still the lawn of choice, bermuda is instead considered a pesky weed because of how hard it can be to control. Common bermuda is the undomesticated version of bermuda most often seen invading fescue lawns and being considered a weed.
Because bermuda is a warm season turf and fescue is a cool season turf, bermuda is at its strongest during the summer when fescue is at its weakest. When you have a situation of incomplete dominance between the bermuda and the fescue, the bermuda is going to win more and more each season. Bermuda spreads and encroaches on the fescue, outcompeting it and choking out new seedlings.

Dear Reader: Tall fescue is a dark green, wide bladed, deeply rooted perennial grass that is found growing everywhere. It is widely used along roads and on farms for erosion control. Because of its course texture it readily shows up in lawns where in comparison the desirable grasses are fine textured. The only control is Roundup when the plants are actively growing. It usually takes a couple of treatments to completely kill it. However, be patient and wait until you are sure it is dead before seeding new grass. Otherwise you will be back to square one! Once it dies, take a sharp spade and dice the clumps up and down like you were dicing an onion. Then sprinkle some new grass seed over the clump and water. The dead tall fescue foliage serves as mulch for the new grass seedlings. There is a turf type tall fescue that makes an excellent lawn when planted alone in a solid stand. I was in the Farm Coop store the other day in line to buy some garden seeds. The farmer in front of me ordered fifty pounds of Kentucky 31 Tall Fescue. I thought, Oh my God, you poor dear, havent you heard?

Those seeds are infected with an internal fungus that secretes an alkaloid that will be toxic to your livestock.
We should not plant another seed of Tall Fescue. Not only is it invasive and non-native , it is toxic to just about everything that consumes it and it inhibits the growth of other plants.
Tall Fescue is one of the most dominant grasses found in pastures, hayland, lawns, roadsides, wetlands and vacant lots throughout most of North America. It is almost always infected with an internal fungus, an endophyte , which produces an alkaloid that is toxic.
Weve known for years its grave effects on pregnant horses: abortions, thickened placentas, and limited milk. Cattle get fescue toxicosis or summer slump which includes elevated body temperature, hoof rot, tail rot, lower conception rates and lower weight gain.

So why does USDA still recommend it and how did it get here in the first place?

Rules For Getting Rid Of Bermuda Grass: Scientists Advice
Scientists from the University of Maryland say that small infestations can be simply dug out while chemical treatment should be used only as a last resort. The problem with herbicides is that they can pose health hazards to humans and pets, whereas perennial grasses are hard to control selectively. The researchers recommend fenoxaprop-based products as the best selective herbicides and glyphosate solutions as non-selective herbicides. The latter ones can be used both in spot treatment and for the renovation of the entire lawn.
Experts distinguish herbicides based not only on their mode of action but on the kind of lawn as well. Patrick McCullough, the Extension Specialist at the University of Georgia, explains which active ingredients should be used on St. Augustinegrass, centipedegrass, fescue, and zoysiagrass. Centipedegrass grows slower than Bermuda grass and is not sensitive to herbicides made with clethodim or sethoxydim. However, if you reapply these products several times, the chemicals may harm centipedegrass as well. To avoid this, make applications no more often than every three weeks. Keep in mind that sethoxydim-based herbicides, such as the Poast Herbicide 2.5gal Sethoxydim 18%, are more efficient when mixed with a surfactant.
Treatment Of The Weed
A good way of killing tall fescue is by using a non-selective post-emergent product. Herbicides such as Eraser 41% Glyphosate can get rid of tall fescue completely. However, this weed killer can damage your lawn when it comes in contact with the grass. A selective herbicide cannot control tall fescue. This means that you cannot spray without killing the surrounding grass. So, how can you kill tall fescue without causing an impact on your lawn?
- Water the lawn if you are in the summer season. Watering the lawn will allow the tall fescue weed to grow faster than your grass. When the lawn is 2-4 inches tall, the weed will be 6-7 inches.
- Wear protective gear such as gloves, goggles, and a long-sleeved shirt.
- Soak a sponge into the herbicide containing glyphosate. Perform this on an area away from your lawn. Squeeze excess solution, so it does not drip on your lawn.
- Use the sponge to brush the blades of tall fescue weed. Also, you can use a fan spray nozzle setting where tall fescue is concentrated. This will help you get an even fine coating on the weed.
- Dig the fescue clumps weed after it dries completely. Also, you can leave it to decompose completely. It is advisable to treat fescue when it is young. A mature weed is more resistant to chemicals. It may need repeated applications, and can take about two weeks to die.
- To prevent further infestations, it is good to water and fertilize your lawn more regularly.

What Grass Will Take Over Bermuda
The secret to having a healthy greener and thicker lawn lies in choosing the right grass species. This is because some grass species like fescue and Zoysia are very weak and will not withstand the stiff competition from Bermuda grass.
But some grass species like St. Augustine and centipede are a bit more resistant to harsh climatic conditions. These will withstand heat and therefore outgrow Bermuda grass when allowed to grow in the same lawn.
But that does not mean that they do not need care without appropriate lawn care, even the toughest grass species will be overtaken by Bermuda grass if not properly tended to.
With this in mind, normalize mowing and watering your grass more often. Also, treat the lawn with pests and diseases herbicides and feed the soil with fertilizers.
