Both herbicides reduced bluebunch wheatgrass aboveground biomass similarly after 2 years of growth in areas without furrows , but imazapic was less detrimental to plant density and seedling emergence than indaziflam . The reason imazapic was equally detrimental to aboveground growth compared to indaziflam, while being less detrimental to plant density and seedling emergence than indaziflam may be due to their different control mechanisms. Indaziflam reduces growth by inhibiting cellulose synthesis , whereas imazapic kills by inhibiting synthesis of branched-chain amino acids . Many seeds treated with imazapic emerged and survived but did not grow into large plants. We anticipate that many of the seeds survived the negative effects of imazapic , but that the legacy effects from hindered early growth resulted in smaller plants after 2 years. Beyond reducing seedling emergence of the seeded species, herbicide legacy effects of imazapic and indaziflam applications may also affect perennial bunchgrass seeds in the native seedbank.

Reinvasion of areas treated with imazapic occurred quickly, with downy brome recovering 2 years after the initial application . Imazapic is a strong control agent immediately following application, but due to higher soil mobility and a shorter soil half-life it may not completely control downy brome 1â2 years after application . We anticipate that reinvasion happened more quickly in our study system than it would in a large-scale imazapic application in post-fire conditions. Our herbicide treatments were only applied to the area where seed was planted, allowing large downy brome stands to grow at the edge of the herbicide-treated rows. This resulted in high propagule pressure, a major factor in invasion rates . In a large-scale application, high invasive propagule pressure occurs mostly near edges, whereas our small plots experienced pressure across the entire herbicide-treated area.
Indaziflam provided better long-term downy brome control than imazapic . As briefly described above, indaziflam has moderate to low mobility and readily persists in soil . Comparatively, indaziflam has a longer half-life in soil than imazapic along with a significant residual activity that likely extends the duration of weed control . With low soil mobility and high residual activity, indaziflam is well equipped to provide several years of downy brome control, a species that has high seed production .

How To Identify Cheatgrass
It is a winter annual grass that germinates in autumn, grows seeds over the winter period and flowers in early summer. It has smooth and slender stems, and leaves that are hairy. The leaves have sheaths that separate except at the nodes of the leaves where they attach to the stem. The plant grows up to a height of around 15-35 inch . Its flowers are arranged in a loose cluster. It is a self-pollinating plant without evidence of outcrossing.
It has a fibrous root system and has lateral roots that spread to help it in absorbing moisture from the soil. This characteristic enables it to absorb moisture up to 28 inch deep. It uses this technique to eliminate any competing plant, therefore, making it easy for it to grow faster.

Also known as field sandburs, grass burrs are grassy weeds that grow in lawns, sports fields, and parks in the summer. While they can sprout on any type of soil, grass burrs tend to thrive more in dry sandy soil.
More often than not, these unwanted weeds will start to germinate in the late spring, develop in the summer, and then grow until the first frost occurs in the falls season.

I was recently driving around with a producer south of Iliff, and we came upon the site of a cheatgrass invasion in his pasture. This wheat-colored, short-statured, winter annual grass is a problem weed in all 50 states, as well as many Mexican states and all 10 Canadian provinces. In Colorado, cheatgrass is listed as a noxious weed. As such, counties possess legal authority for regulation and management of this plant. This weed is especially prevalent on roadsides, railway and utility right-of- ways, and disturbed areas. Increasingly, it is also dominating large rangeland pastures, where it cheats the native prairie of valuable nutrients and moisture.
Like many High Plains plants, this one has a colorful word history. Cheatgrass Latin name is Bromus tectorum, due to its tendency to grow in decaying/old sod roofs. Its Latin root is tectum, for roof, and bromus, for oats hence the name Bromus tectorum, or grass of the roofs. This speaks to cheatgrass exceptional competitive ability. Other names include downy brome, early chess, wheat- thief, and Mormon oats.
Cheatgrass expansion into sagebrush poses a significant threat to livestock grazing and wildlife habitat.

Willbleach Kill Weeds Permanently
Bleach will kill most small weeds. It wont work against larger or invasive weeds like Ivy, Brambles or Knotweed. If you use it on soiled areas you will no longer be able to use that space for growing, it can take several months before your soil is suitable for planting.
Bleach is not good for the environment so I dont recommend using it in the garden. You could use it on areas like cracks in the concrete of your driveway but the recipe I listed above is just as effective and wont harm wildlife.
Household Vinegar Versus Concentrated Vinegar
Although you may have heard household vinegar recommended as a homemade weedkiller, only concentrated vinegar will destroy weeds. The regular vinegar in your kitchen contains about 5 percent acetic acid. A homemade household vinegar spray might cause some temporary harm to weeds and grass, but the acid isn’t powerful. On the other hand, commercial concentrated vinegar herbicides can contain as much as 25 percent acetic acid. The higher concentration has a more devastating effect on plants than household vinegar. The weeds that are most easy to control using concentrated vinegar are annual weeds, especially when they’ve sprouted only one or two leaves. Annual plants naturally die at the end of the growing season. Perennial plants, which grow back every year, often withstand vinegar sprays by regenerating from their roots.
