You can use a pressure washer, damp rag, paper towel, or any other cleaning agent. Just be sure that all dirt, mildew, and sanding dust is removed. Let the furniture dry completely.

  • Protect

Be sure to protect your work area with drop cloths of some sort and tape off any areas where drop cloths are impractical. Planning on painting metal garden furniture when the weather picks up again? Plan to do the job on a dry day that isn’t too hot: all the sanding and scraping in preparation for the painting is hard graft, and you’ll want to do on a mild day that isn’t too scorching.

You’ll also want to avoid humid days when there are lots of flies about, as they’ll most likely stick to your paint work. So, while we normally wouldn’t recommend August for painting metal, this particular August might just be your best bet.

    • I needed three coats to evenly cover every inch of my chairs, but just make sure you give your paint plenty of time to dry before adding a new layer.
    • Last but not least, add two coats of your top coat varnish to protect your paint from wearing off too quickly.
    • In fact, if you plan on using your chairs on a daily basis I would probably add another two coats of your top coat on top of those to give it as much protection as possible!

And thats all! I still have a long way to go with my back porch, but at least Im one step closer to figuring it all out.

Paint Mesh Metal Outdoor Patio Furniture

Spray Paint Metal Chairs: How To, DIY, Dining Room, Wrought Iron

Today is themed furniture day and the theme is outdoor furniture. Not only is my project super simple..its budget friendly. Gotta love that.

The chairs are super comfortable and they swivel and rock. The original mesh in the seats gave out several years ago. At the time I decided to redo the seats. Boy was that a job. I searched the fabric stores for outdoor fabric to match the 90s blue color of the frame. I found one design at the time and when I looked for similar fabric recently I didn’t have any luck.

Removing the original fabric from the tubing and replacing it with the new fabric was very, very, difficult. Im sure there is a special tool just for this type project but I love doing things the hard way. Once..never again.

When the replacement fabric on two of the chairs gave out we tossed the chairs. I know..bad. Sometimes you just have to say I’m done.

The paint on the chairs and table is faded and a little grungy. Well, guess what.I painted over it all.no cleaning..who has time for that. You would never know all that grunge is under the new coat of paint.

The miracle worker is RustOleum Metallic Spray Paint. Its a paint and primer in one and the color is Oil Rubbed Bronze .

Can You Spray Paint Sling Fabric On Outdoor Chairs

You can spray paint the sling or fabric mesh part of outdoor chairs, but if your slings are made of vinyl that moves when you sit on them, the paint will eventually crack off.

There are spray paints for vinyl car seats sold at auto supply stores or here: These paints only come in a few colors and some are not formulated for outdoor use to hold up to weather conditions.

Rustoleum makes a spray paint for outdoor fabric.

This paint works great on fabric, but not vinyl. If your slings are made more fabric-like with cotton fibers this paint would work. If your slings are more of a larger weave vinyl fabric like mine are, it would not work for the long run.

I know there are videos showing people spraying the slings on chairs and they look great, but for how long? One summer maybe before chipping and peeling would start. No one ever has a video showing how the paint on the sling sections has held up.

If you want to try, I would suggest sanding the slings with 60 grit sandpaper first, cleaning them well and letting dry. You can try a primer for plastic and then use an outdoor spray paint over this.

Painting Gives New Life To Decor

Isnt paint wonderful? Not only does it come in a wide variety of colors and textures, but it truly can make a world of difference with even the most unappealing items. In fact, I would dare to say that over half of the items I own end up getting a few different coats of paint every few years. Yikes!

For instance, Ive only been living in this new house my husband and I purchased back in March, and Ive already painted my kitchen cabinets. Im crossing my fingers I wont get that bug to repaint them anytime soon because it was a HUGE project!

Anyways, with all of that being said, I found myself wanting a new patio set since it blended in wayyyy too much with our house siding. However, after looking at my budget and then the prices I saw for the sets I liked it was quite apparent that my good ol trusty friend paint, would need to rescue the day!

    How To Refurbish Patio Furniture

How to Paint Metal Patio Chairs (Step-by-Step!!)

Start by cleaning your furniture off real good. We sprayed all the cobwebs off, got out a rag, and really gave it a good wipe down, careful to remove all the dirt and grime.

Once all washed off, we took the sand paper and gently sanded the places where the paint was lifting up so that they were nice and smooth. We did not rough up the furniture since most of the paint was still in tact. I dried all the furniture off, then one by one I placed my patio chairs into my HomeRight Spray Shelter in my garage and got to spraying.

I used Rustoleums Ultra Cover Paint in Black Semi-Gloss from Home Depot. I didnt have to thin out the paint at all, which was good. I held the Spray Machine about a foot from the chairs and started painting back and forth, then Id turn the chair and get the side, and then the next side until completely covered.

The paint dries very quickly, so by the time I was done painting all four chairs and the table, the first chair was completely dried. I sprayed all the furniture with two thick coats of paint just to be sure to protect it.

Its amazing how a coat of paint can do such wonders!

For the table, I placed inside of the spray shelter and painted one side, let it dry. Then painted the next, let it dry, until all four sides were painted. The tablet definitely took the most time, but made the biggest difference!

I let dry inside of my garage overnight and then the next day I bought some new cushions and a new umbrella from At Home store.

How To Rejuvenate Faded Metal Outdoor Furniture Using Rust

One of the best ways to enjoy a backyard and patio is with a beautiful, welcoming space with furniture that catches your eye. But that furniture, especially metal outdoor furniture, can take a beating from the elements and look worn and faded. Today Im going to share with you one of the easiest and cheapest ways to update your outdoor space how to rejuvenate faded metal outdoor furniture using spray paint.

Its an easy project that anyone can tackle in an afternoon. Plus refurbishing faded metal outdoor furniture this way will help your wallet, costing a fraction of the price of brand new furniture.

Heres my metal outdoor side table. I picked it up for free last year from a neighbor through a Facebook Freebie group. Its a small round metal outdoor side table. Very unassuming. But I see a lot of potential in it. It would be perfect in a corner of my patio to hold a small planter, or sit next to my chair for my morning tea or a good book. Or hold a Sangria pitcher and glasses for two.

While it was in overall decent shape when I picked it up from my neighbor, I wasnt keen on the color. I wasnt necessarily repulsed by the color. It just didnt do anything for me. So I decided to refurbish this faded metal outdoor furniture piece and Im so glad I did!

Krylon Colormaster Paint + Primer Best Primed Spray Paint For Outdoor Metal Furniture

ColorMaster exhibits its durability from its moisture repellence, corrosion aversion, and scratch resistance as well. It is applicable both indoors and outdoors. Its coverage is commendable. It also needs a maximum of two skins applied at 10-minute intervals. This stain is toxic.

No priming is necessary before pigmenting. It is resistant to winter cold and withstands high temperatures not exceeding 225 °F. Applying additional skins before the former fully cures could lead to bubbles on the stain causing the final result to be unsatisfactory. Strict adherence to guidelines is crucial.

Taking Time To Enjoy The Sunset

All in all, Im happy with the way using chalk paint on metal patio furniture transformed these pieces.

It took me a full day to hand paint this patio set which is why I think using the paint sprayer would have helped save time and also given the set a better coverage.

I was so tired by the time I finished painting all those curves!

In fact, I had a, How am I going to get this done! moment of panic as the sun was starting to set.

It was one of those moments where you either have to let it go and breathe it out or let it dictate the rest of your night.

On this night, I chose good wine, good food, good friends, and a beautiful sunset.

I know this is a busy time of year for all of us so I just want to gently remind you, that we always have a choice.

Even when things get really hectic.

So dont forget to give yourself the gift of calm whenever you can, as often as you can.

Let us know if you have any tips and tricks for using chalk paint on metal patio furniture! Until next time, Ill see you on and .

Supplies Needed To Paint Metal Patio Furniture

Before painting, I first cleaned them with all-purposed cleaner and a scotch pad sponge. I also went over the rusty spots with a metal wire brush to remove any loose pieces of paint or rust.

Its important to prime those places where rust is forming because if they arent primed, the rust will come right through the new coat of paint. For those rusty spots, I used rusty metal primer.

Then, I gave each chair a quick coat with clean metal primer to ensure the new paint would adhere beautifully to the chairs.

I used a gloss spray paint in six bright colors to change things up for this little patio set.

Each chair needed two coats of spray paint, which ended up being one full can of paint per chair.

When spraying chairs, the trick is to give two coats of paint with the chairs upside down, let them dry completely, and then flip them over and give two coats of paint to the front sides that werent hit when the chairs were upside down.

My girls each have their favorite colored chair to sit in, and Mommy gets the green chair that rocks. My four-year-old daughter commented that she didnt like that I chose my favorite colors for the rocking chairs instead of her favorite color, purple. I told her that when she starts painting furniture she can decide the color she wants to paint it. I may regret that statement in a couple of years

What Spray Paint Do I Use On Metal Outdoor Furniture

You can use most spray paints. However, you want to look for a can that specifically says METAL on it listed as a use.

If your furniture is particularly rusty, you might consider a separate metal primer.

The paint that I chose is Krylon brand in a Satin Jade color. I selected a paint and primer in one, since my furniture wasnt severely rusted.
