How To Care For A Growing Lawn

Like all seeds, grass seed must have a regular supply of water to germinate. After sowing, water the area well, with a fine rose on the watering can, and continue to water if theres no rain. Many of the repair kits come complete with extra ingredients, to hold onto moisture and help the seed imbibe water.

Once it has germinated, take care when mowing to avoid cutting the new grass too short. Just keep it lightly trimmed until it has had a chance to establish and thicken out. First Things First In Patching Grass

Before you start to tackle the issue, the first step in patching grass is to figure out what went wrong in the first place. Grass can die for any number of reasons and, unless the issue is corrected sooner than later, the problem will recur and cause more disruption to your lawn.

Start by thoroughly inspecting the dead grass. Look for soil compaction, shade issues, disease and insect problems, or water drainage issues. The spots featured in the lawn below were caused by improper pesticide use. More specifically, Roundup® was used to spray the dandelions and clover in the turf, subsequently killing the grass as well.

Here are the steps that were taken to fix bare spots in this lawn.

Dont Spill On The Grass

Park your spreader over a tarp or your driveway when filling the hopper.

Note: Spills and leaks can saturate one spot of your lawn and kill your grass.

Between your second and third spring mowings, apply lawn fertilizer.
Pro tip: Use a fertilizer with slow-release nitrogen.

Follow the spread rate listed on the fertilizer bag and spread it on the entire lawn.

Pro tip: For your spring and summer mowings, cut just the top third of the grass. So if your grass is 3 inches high, take 1 inch off the top. Mowing more than one-third stresses the grass. You can mow the grass shorter in the fall.

How To Repair A Bald Spot In Your Lawn

Chances are that after the long winter, there are at least a few patches in your turf that are sparse, or completely bare.

Those spots can lend themselves to erosion, and spoil the overall appearance of your lawn. Fortunately, there are some fairly easy steps you can take to thicken or replace the grass in such areas.

First off, you will want to completely clear the area of anything but established sod. This means any leaves, twigs, dead grass, or weeds must be raked out before you begin the process or repairing bare patches.

This will help to ensure that the new grass you are about to put down will get the fullest possible amount of sunlight, as well as prevent the possibility of unwanted fungal growth later on.

Next, you will need to sow your seed. If possible, try to select a type seed of seed that is of the same type or very similar to that which is growing throughout the rest of your lawn.

For example, if you have mostly bluegrass, dont patch with rye or fescue, as repaired patches will be noticeably different from the rest of the lawn.

If your grass is already of a mixed variety, you can simply reseed with a basic mix intended to grow well in your climate region. Note that I prefer a mixed lawn myself, though many people despise this option.

Once you have applied the seed and fertilizer, the rest is simply maintenance and patience.

Cut through the uneven patch with an H-shaped incision and peel back the turf.
Fork over the base and either remove excess soil or add new top soil to raise the level.
Firm down the soil and make sure the patch is level before replacing the turf.

Check the lawn is level and adjust again if necessary.
Brush a sandy lawn top-dressing into the crevices between the turves.
Compress the turf edges with the back of a rake.

Water in with a watering can fitted with a fine rose.

How Do You Repair Lawn Edges

Lawn edges looking a little ragged? There’s a quick and easy fix, as the RHS explains:

Grab your half moon edging iron and best garden spade and dig out the damaged area with straight, square cuts on three sides. Then prepare the base as above by lightly forking the soil and adding a layer of topsoil.
Turn the damaged square around 180°. Then replace it so that the cut edge aligns with the lawn edge and the damaged edge is facing inwards.
Cut and remove the damaged area and reseed as above.

Fill In Bare Patches In The Lawn

If youre filling in patches, be sure to choose lawn seed that will match your existing grass. For example, if your lawn is made of fine-bladed fescues, choose a fine or luxury lawn seed mix, but if its a hard-wearing lawn with thick-bladed ryegrass, a box of general purpose lawn seed will suffice.

In general with lawn seed, the adage that you get what you pay for holds true. Good quality lawn seed will have high germination rates and shouldnt contain rogue grass species, giving you a better lawn in the long run.

Applying Your Seeding Mixture

Choose a repair mixture suited to your climate, grass type and sunlight exposure. Smooth the seeding mixture over the soil, applying it at a rate of 1 cup per square foot. This ensures adequate sunlight for germinating and proper seed-to-soil contact for quick, thorough grass establishment. Forget about planting depth and seed stabilization simply cover exposed soil thoroughly, and water the seeding mixture well.

Proper watering is the most important and often the most neglected part of the spot repair process. Moisture-retentive mulch reduces necessary watering and keeps protected seed in place, even on slopes, but expect to water at least once daily. Let weather guide your efforts adjust your watering to keep repaired areas consistently moist, but never soggy.

Keep repaired areas evenly moist until seedlings reach the recommended mowing height for your chosen grass type. For example, a dense shade mixture should reach 2 1/2 to 3 inches tall, and tall fescue should measure 3 to 4 inches, before you reduce watering to a normal weekly or twice-weekly schedule. Seedlings emerge over seven to 21 days after repair, depending on your mix, and reach mowing height in three to four additional weeks.

Lawn Patch Repair Steps

Try to identify the reason for the patch and remedy that. It could be something under the soil surface, dogs, or an obvious problem like a spill.

Using a suitable cultivator tool, dig up the area and break up the soil surface. I like to use a half-moon edging tool. A spade, trowel or cultivator can also do a good job to prepare the soil for a lawn patch repair.

Sprinkle on some suitable fresh grass seed. New grass seed will have a better chance of germinating. As long as seed is kept cool and dry and in a breathable container it can last for a long time.

Cover the seed with some topsoil or soil-based compost. This part is important as will help the grass to germinate and keep it protected. If seed is left on the surface it can be eaten by birds or mice or be desiccated by the wind or sun.

Rake the repair flat. Try to level off the lawn patch repair and blend it in with the surrounding surface soil.

Water the seed in. Watering the patch is important as it grows. Keeping it moist will consolidate the soil around the seed. Soil contact is important for the seed to help it establish a root quickly.

Keep it moist. Over the next few weeks, keep the area moist and protected from foot traffic and mowing. The new grass will blend in with your surrounding lawn quickly.

Aftercare: You can mow the patch for the first time when the grass is 5-8cm high. Do not remove more than 1/3 of the grass leaf at any one time. Feed your lawn after the first 2 cuts.

How To Patch Bare Patches With Sod

A quicker method than seeding is to fill the bare spot with a patch cut from a roll of grass sod. This is a good method if you have several bare patches to treat. A roll of sod is usually less than $10, and you can cut many patches from a single roll. Within a couple of weeks, you’ll have an acceptable patch that has blended in with the surrounding grass.
