Can You Put Topsoil On Existing Lawn

Why should you add SAND on your Bermuda lawn?

You can add topsoil to an existing lawn and in some cases, you should. Adding a layer of topsoil to your lawn is called topdressing, and its a technique you can use to improve the look of your grass. Its important you prepare correctly and choose the right type of soil for a great-looking lawn.

Problems With Top Dressing With Sand

As with many DIY projects, a lot can go wrong if youre not careful. And since sand is an abrasive material especially on the grass, you want to avoid some common mistakes that people make. One of those problems is not applying the top dressing evenly. As mentioned, sand is at best a neutral element that doesnt improve the nutrition of the soil. At worst, it can prevent the grass from getting the nutrition it needs.

So always apply the sand evenly and use a rake to spread it and prevent little piles of it on the lawn. This could choke the grass. Its also recommended that the first time you apply sand as a top dressing to go with a very thin layer. Anything around an eighth of an inch should do until you get a better handle on the process.

Also, dont use sand as a top dressing for clay soil. This doesnt loosen the soil as much as creates a cement-like composition. Top dressing sand is not the same as mixing sand with clay to improve drainage. Youre not mixing the sand with the soil, youre just spreading on top of it which could have adverse effects.

Another problem comes from using contaminated sand. Make sure the sand is clean and doesnt contain seeds of weed which would spread across the lawn and damage the turfgrass. If you can, try to use sterilized sand. That would eliminate the risk of invasive plants.

What Is Lawn Sand

Lawn sand is a combined weedkiller, moss killer for lawns and lawn fertiliser – though usually sold as a moss treatment. It consists of ammonium sulphate, iron sulphate and fine sand. It should be applied between April and September, in dry conditions, but preferably when rain is expected within a couple of days.

Moss Killer Lawn Sand

Follow the application instructions on the packet, but do not exceed the stated application rate otherwise the grass may be killed – as well as weeds and moss. Annual use will also keep worms, and therefore worm casts off the lawn.

Lawn sand can be bought at most large garden centres together with the smaller nursery type centres. It is not the most popular of lines to stock, so difficulty may be experienced in finding a lawn sand supplier in your area.It maybe in the section of Moss Killer for Lawns.

Because of the high weight to value ratio, it is not normally available online. Where lawn sand is available online, then expect to pay a premium price for either the product, or the carriage costs.

How To Use Sand To Repair Bare Spots

Sand can also be used to repair bare spots in a lawn.

Items you will need for the project include:

  • A Spade
  • Shredded Mulch

The process can be performed in nine steps.

  • Dig straight down into the area with the spade and remove as much of the dead spot as possible including the dead root system. Cut through the dead spot and stop at healthy grass.
  • 2. Mix a 50-50 ratio of sand and fresh topsoil in a clean bucket with a clean spade.

    3. Fill the hole with the mixture until it is level with the ground.

    4. Sprinkle seed on the fresh sand and soil mixture. Add slightly more than one-third of a pound of seed per every 250 square feet of dirt. For larger areas, add 1.5-pounds of seed per thousand square feet.

    5. Lightly cover with one-eighth-inch of sand and soil mix.

    6. Tamp down lightly with your hand enough to set the seed so it wont blow away.

    7. Cover the fresh seed with a thin layer of shredded mulch. Keep the area covered with mulch for a minimum of two weeks or until the seed germinates.

    8. Water the area enough to keep it moist twice a day in regions with limited rainfall. Dont allow the seed to sit in standing water.

    9. Continue to water daily until the seeds germinate and sprout.

When you mow the area, keep the cutting height slightly higher than usual until the spot has blended seamlessly into the surrounding grass. Dont add fertilizer or weed killer and feed to the grass until it is firmly established.

Top Dressing A Lawn: The Benefits And How To Do It

    Filling In 1

Upon first thought, it seems somewhat absurd to spread a layer of compost or sand over your grass. After all, dirt is supposed to be under the grass. This is what topdressing is, though, and its a great thing to periodically do for your lawn.

Topdressing a lawn is accomplished by spreading a thin layer of material such as compost or sand over the grass. This practice has been observed since golf was first invented in Scotland and is gaining popularity with homeowners looking for organic lawn care strategies.

Sand is used because people think it will improve air space, water infiltration and drainage. These are important goals, but topdressing a lawn with sand doesn’t help achieve them. No matter what your soil is composed of, putting sand on top can actually cause drainage problems and dry pockets in the soil.

Likewise, what does sand do for grass? The purpose of applying a layer of sand over grass it to level out the uneven surface, as well as cover tree roots. Besides this, they are also used to address common lawn issues like low spots, compacted soil, bare spots, or depletion of nutrients from neglect, chemical exposure, or leaching.

Sand is oftentimes used to level lawns, but putting sand on lawns can cause problems. You should never use pure sand to level a lawn. Using a dry topsoil and sand mix is much better for leveling uneven areas than putting sand on a lawn without mixing.

Common Top Dressing Materials To Use

As we mentioned, when it comes to using sand to top dress a lawn, many people are divided about the issue. However, experts recommend that you analyze the soil in your lawn and choose a suitable material that matches it. Thats the golden rule for top dressing. If you use a different material, it could interfere with the growth of the grass and might even leave barren patches where you applied it. Here are common materials to consider.

    • Sand: By far the most popular top dressing material for your lawn. It works best when your lawn is sandy or loamy. But even if you have clay soil, sand can improve the drainage and aeration of the lawn and improve the growth of the grass.
    • Topsoil: When in doubt, try to use the same soil in your lawn to cover holes and level out the lawn. You wont risk changing the composition of the lawn or impact the grass in a negative way. On the other hand, it wont improve the fertility of the soil either.
    • Compost: Many experts recommend using compost over sand or soil since it enriches the soil and doesnt have any of the negative effects those two have. Make sure youre using a finished product and that the compost is not contaminated with weed seeds or other invasive plants.

    Putting Sand On My Lawn

If youre still planning to put sand on your lawn for various reasons, then you have to be wary. One mistake many people make about placing sand is applying TOO much of it and/or unevenly. As a result, there are globs of sand all around the lawn while the grass feels choked because of the excess sand on top of it.

When youre topdressing your lawn, may it be with sand or compost, you need to make sure that you spread a very thin layer evenly all throughout the lawn. If you do see globs or mounds, you need to correct it immediately.

Furthermore, avoid topdressing your lawn with sand when correcting clay soil. It wont loosen the soil but actually hardens it to have it feel cement-like!

I highly recommend that when you topdress with sand, mow your lawn beforehand. Then, use a mix of 50% sand with 50% of fresh topsoil. Only cover the lawn to about 1/8 inch of the mixture, tamping it down lightly using your hand.

While you can do this yearly or as needed, I discourage you to do so, unless youll be using high-quality compost soil. This can help maintain the health of your lawn.

Why You Should Top Dress A Lawn

As mentioned above, top dressing a lawn has many benefits. So heres why you should add it to your lawn maintenance routine:

    • Topdressing helps keep the lawns surface levelled. This is done by filling all of the smaller hollows and undulations with the topdressing mix, thus levelling the lawn surface.
    • Topdressing your lawn regularly helps prevent the buildup of thatch. Topdress can dilute the thatch layer and is also known to naturally break it down.
    • Using sand based topdressing can improve your soils drainage and firm up the surface. This works particularly well after aeration as the topdressing can be worked into the soil through the holes left behind.
    • Spreading peat-based topdressing can improve the drought tolerance of your lawn.
    • Some topdressing mixtures contain nutrients so applying them can improve your lawn’s fertility.
    • Topdressing helps stimulate grass growth in lawns and betters the soil structure of the already existing root zone.
    • Improves the lawns resilience.

    Top Dressing Your Lawn

The practice of top dressing started with golf courses. Some types of turfgrass tend to produce a lot of thatch. From there, homeowners started to adopt this process to keep their lawn looking its best. After all, theres no reason why your lawn shouldnt look well-manicured and meticulous like the golf course.

But as usual, there are voices that maintain that using sand as a top dresser for your lawn can bring more harm than good. They stress that sand prevents the grass from getting enough nutrients from the soil. There are also claims that sand reduces the fertility of the soil. But as every gardener will tell you, sand is mixed with heavy soil and clay all the time to improve drainage and aeration.

Also if you maintain your lawn with fertilizing and watering, the grass will not be impacted by the sand. And if the soil in your lawn is mostly loamy or sandy, then adding a thin layer of sand will not make much difference to the soil acidity, fertility, or pH levels.

Filling Low Spots In The Lawn

You can easily make your own lawn patching soil by mixing sand and dry topsoil in equal parts of half-and-half, spreading the leveling mix into low-lying areas of the lawn. Some people also use compost, which is great for enriching the soil. Only add one-half inch of soil mix to the low spots at a time, leaving any existing grass showing through.

After leveling, fertilize lightly and water the lawn thoroughly. You may still notice some low areas in the lawn but its oftentimes best to allow the grass to grow up through the soil for at least a month before repeating the process. After about four to six weeks, another half-inch of the dry topsoil mix can be added to the remaining areas.

Keep in mind that deeper areas of the lawn, which are more than an inch lower than the soil, require a slightly different approach. To fill uneven lawn low spots like these, first remove the grass with a shovel and fill in the depression with soil mix, laying the grass back in place. Water and fertilize thoroughly.

Now that you know how to level a lawn, you do not need to go out and hire an expensive professional. With a little time and effort, you can fill uneven lawn ruts and indentations in no time.

Experts agree that sand should only be used on a lawn to level low areas, cover exposed tree roots and to fix heavy thatch build up. Even in those cases, it is recommended that you top dress with a rich, fine compost instead of sand.

when should you put sand on your lawn? Basically, the only reasons to apply a layer of soil or sand to a lawn are to fill in low areas or bare areas, as a method of dealing with an identified thatch problem or possibly to cover surface tree roots. Topdressing your lawn with sand on a regular basis is not a recommended practice.

why would you put sand on your lawn?

The purpose of applying a layer of sand over grass it to level out the uneven surface, as well as cover tree roots. Besides this, they are also used to address common lawn issues like low spots, compacted soil, bare spots, or depletion of nutrients from neglect, chemical exposure, or leaching.

    How Often To Top

Trouble spots may need repeat applications, but regular, uniform top-dressing does not need to be an annual tradition. Keep in mind that youre adding soil, which over time will raise your grade and affect thatch breakdown and soil ecology, so dont go overboard. Plan several light applications for troublesome yards, rather than one deep one. For overall organic soil amendment, a very light application of top-dressing brushed into aeration holes can improve the soil without raising the grade.

Should You Consider Adding Sand To A Lawn

Top-dressing with sand is a common practice on golf courses and sports fields, leading some homeowners to believe that the practice has universal applicability. However, according to Clemson Cooperative Extension, putting sand on grass functions differently on a sports field, which is typically not composed of native soils. Instead, sports fields often have sand bases intended to draw water away from the grass and prevent the soil from becoming compacted. In this setting, a sand top-dressing ensures that the sand base remains clean and level.

By contrast, a residential lawn typically consists of native soil, and top-dressing with sand can damage the soil by introducing new insects and weeds that were not previously present. The University of Florida IFAS Extension bluntly recommends that homeowners refrain from applying sand top-dressing at all. The best use of sand on lawns is to address bare patches or cover exposed tree roots, and even then, topsoil or compost may be preferable to sand.

    When Should You Apply It

The best time to apply it is in the spring.

Generally speaking, youre looking at somewhere between the end of March and the middle of April. However, the perfect moment for you depends on the weather where you live.

As the weather begins to warm up after the cold winter months, you should start to see signs of the grass coming out of its winter hibernation. When you start to see this new growth, you can go ahead and apply the top dressing.

Remember that you arent just setting out to kill moss and broadleaf weeds. Youre also fertilizing the soil. If you apply it too early, the soil may be too cold for that nitrogen-rich compound to do its job.

You should avoid applying this top dressing in periods of drought or extremely dry conditions. The two chemical compounds of the sand could potentially scorch the grass.

There are some important gardening tips to remember when it comes to timing your top dressing application.

You should apply it in between mowing sessions. Try to make sure you apply it at least three days before and after a mowing session for maximum benefit. For example, if you mow once per week, you should apply the sand on day four. That gives you three days in both directions.

Timing it this way will ensure the grass is short enough to guarantee better coverage of the moss and weeds and ensure the chemicals in the sand have time to absorb into the soil before the next mowing session.
