Solarizing To Kill Your Grass

How to Kill Weeds in the Lawn Without Killing Grass

For larger areas, one of the best ways to kill unwanted grass is to cook it. Focusing the sun on areas of the sod at its highest heat level will cook the roots and effectively kill it. You can use an old window or black plastic to hone the sun and heat in on the area. The optimal time for solarization is summer when the sun is at its hottest.

Cut the grass to a short length and then cover the area with plastic or glass. Black plastic works best but you can also use clear plastic. Hold the plastic down with rocks, soil staples, boards or whatever you have handy. It can take a few weeks to a month to kill the roots completely. Then remove the covering and turn over or remove the dead sod.

Why Get Rid Of Weeds

View in gallery

Weeds are no fund and thats easy to see. However, most people just see weeds and think, there are weeds there, better get rid of them, without knowing why its important to do so. And no, its not just because they are ugly.;

Weeds can be dangerous to the other life around them. Many weeds cause allergies while others are poisonous. But its always other plants that suffer. Unwanted weeds can steal the nutrients from plants in your yard.;

Ready To Spray Weed Control

“Ready to spray” weed controls are formulated to be applied from a pre-made, pre-set hose end sprayer. You simply hook it up to your hose and go spray the weeds in the lawn.

“Ready to spray” application is best performed on a lawn that is more covered in weeds because this method is truly best applied as a blanket application. You literally spray the entire bottle evenly across the lawn.

The primary pieces of information you need in order to do this are your lawns size and the amount of square footage the product covers. From there you evenly apply the product through the sprayer across the lawn. Be sure to read the label and follow all instructions on re-entry to the area after application.

Since this is a blanket spray type application, you should apply it when the weeds are at their worst in the later spring. This just so happens to correspond with that first week of May time frame – for some reason, this is when weeds seem to be the worst in many areas of the country.

Use A Selective Herbicide

You want to choose a weed killer which has been engineered to kill the weed but not that the grass you have. The term selective means that it selects what it should kill and disregards all other vegetation. 2,4-D is the more common selective herbicide which has been researched for decades on its safety and effectiveness. Using it properly has minimal risks and is extremely effective at killing weeds without killing your grass. Consult our blog about safety of weed control to learn more about how to properly apply herbicides in general. Selective herbicide works by entering the leaf of the weed and changing the way the plant handles nutrients. It causes it to literally grow and age itself to death. Selective herbicides typically take 4-14 days to see very strong results but can literally start to work overnight. It is an effective way to kill 99% of broadleaf weeds down to the root so that same weed shouldnt be a problem in the future. If you want to do this yourself the products we recommend would be either Weed B Gon or Killex. These products can be purchased at a local hardware store such as Home Depot or Lowe’s.

When To Apply Lawn Weed Killer

How To Get Rid Of A Lawn Full Of Weeds

You will only kill weeds when they are actively growing. This means commencing sometime in May and finishing sometime in late September or early October.

I would not rush to apply lawn weed killer to the whole lawn in the early spring as there will be a lot of weeds that wont surface until later on. In early spring just spot or hand weed. For a good weed kill over a broad range of weeds in your lawn try starting in May. If you need to repeat the treatment you still have plenty of time before cold weather makes it impractical. Read the label of your weed killer to make sure repeat treatments are allowed.

A well fertilised lawn will help you get the most from your weed killer. In spring apply fertiliser in April and weed kill end of May or early June. In autumn feed 7-10 days before weed spraying.

One of my favourite times for complete lawn weed control is in late August or September whilst there is still some warmth around. I would recommend this if you just need the one application in the year. The reason for this is:

  • Most weed types are still around
  • The spring seeds in your lawn will have germinated so you get those as well
  • Killing weeds in autumn is easier than killing winter hardened weeds in spring
  • Youll have a weed free lawn until the next round of weed seeds germinate the following spring

How Do I Kill Weeds In My Lawn

Allyn Hane– “The Lawn Care Nut”

We;are coming up on one of my favorite days of the year, Kentucky Derby Day which is followed directly by May 5 or, Cinco-De-Mayo.

I like these days for the racing and the margaritas of course, but more importantly, Ive always thought of this time of year, the first week of May, as the peak time for lawns in much of the country.

When I lived in NW Indiana outside of Chicago, I had some of my enjoyable times mowing the lawn right around this time of year. Spring rains are pushing the lawn naturally bolstered by lightning releasing natural nitrogen into the air. Even the grass on the side of the highway is green this time of year.

However, there are other plants thriving in lawns this time of year and those are dandelions, clover, plantain, dollar weed, ragweed and many many more!

It seems all that extra rain, nitrogen and sunlight help everyone, so what can we do?

First off, having a thick, healthy stand of turf is the best way to help crowd out weeds naturally. Pushing your turf to thicken up with Milorganite fertilizer is a great way to get there. Along your journey though, you may have to apply some herbicides.

Best Dandelion Killers The Heavy Hitters

Many of the chemicals that have been used in herbicides in the past have been banned in recent years.

That hasnt stopped the industrys biggest names from making adjustments and producing new products that comply with the stricter guidelines.

There are many different environmentally friendly herbicides to choose from that are designed to kill dandelions.

In the interest of making this guide as complete as possible, we decided to review five of the best choices on the market today.

All of the products we include in this guide are good dandelion killers and in most cases, the choice comes down to brand loyalty and price.

There are numerous weed killers on the market, but few of them are as effective as Compare-N-Save Concentrate Grass & Weed Killer.

This chemical will kill pretty much any weed it comes in contact with, including dandelions.

They key to its success is a high concentrate of a chemical called Glyphosate.

This helps to prevent weeds from making proteins that are essential in their growth process.

Its so effective that youll begin to notice the dandelions and other weeds begin to wilt and die within the first two days.

After the first week, almost all of the weeds will be removed from your lawn.

Because this product is so powerful, you do need to be careful how you apply it.

Its important to concentrate your spray on the weed in question.

    Willbleach Kill Weeds Permanently

Bleach will kill;most small;weeds. It wont work against larger or invasive;weeds;like Ivy, Brambles or Knotweed. If you use it on soiled areas you;will;no longer be able to use that space for growing, it;can;take several months before your soil is suitable for planting.

Bleach is not good for the environment so I dont recommend using it in the garden. You could use it on areas like cracks in the concrete of your driveway but the recipe I listed above is just as effective and wont harm wildlife.

    Begin With Broadleaf Weeds

The term Broadleaf Weeds is a very broad and general term and covers hundreds of different weed types which can all be successfully killed by Broadleaf herbicides.

Broadleaf herbicides are one of the cheapest weed killers to purchase, as well as being the single herbicide that can kill more weed types than any other. So this is the obvious first choice. Broadleaf herbicides can be purchased from your local nursery or online gardening store.

Purchase and apply a Broadleaf herbicide to the lawn, and allow 2 weeks to see full results. Dont expect all weeds, including Broadleaf weeds, to be killed with a single application.

After 2 weeks check the lawn weeds and look for signs of weeds that have browned-off but havent yet died. The lawn may than require another application of Broadleaf herbicide.

Off With Their Heads With A Scuffle Hoe

How to get rid of weeds in the lawn

The scuffle hoe gets its names from the double-edged hinged blade that rocks back and forth with a push-pull motion. As it rocks, it slices weeds off at the crown. Repeated beheading depletes the weed roots of stored food and the plant dies. Shallow cultivation also avoids bringing more weed seeds to the surface where they can sprout.

    Does Vinegar Kill Weeds Permanently

False: Vinegar only kills aboveground weed growth.

Weeds and grass will grow back after an application of vinegar. This is because the acetic acid in vinegar burns plant leaves and stalks on contact, but vinegar is completely neutralized by soil. In other words, vinegar wont penetrate the roots of weeds.

    • Vinegar will not kill weed and grass roots.
    • Most species of weeds and invasive grass will regrow quickly following vinegar application.

If you spray weeds and unwanted grasses with a vinegar and dish soap solution, the tops of the plant will turn brown and wilt. However, in a few weeks the weed will sprout back from the unharmed root. Vinegar is not a permanent weed solution.

The Impact Of A Healthy Lawn

A healthy lawn begets a healthy lawn, and the more time you put into creating an environment in your yard where grass is able to thrive, the fewer problems youll have with lawn weeds.

A very thick well maintained lawn will leave no gaps in the canopy where weeds can take root.

When the grass is thick, it will take in all of the sunlight and nutrients, which will block the weeds from thriving.

If you are environmentally conscious and care about the health of yourself and pets, not using chemicals is usually the better option, but Ill cover both choices here so you can make the best choice for your family and your lawn.

Can I Get Rid Of Weeds In A Lawn Naturally

How to Get Rid of Crabgrass in Lawn

Yes! But it may take more time and effort. Spraying vinegar directly on weeds is a natural way to get rid of them. It dries out the plant leaves and kills whats above the ground.

Also, pick vinegar that contains more than the standard 5 percent acetic acid. Head to a home improvement store instead of the supermarket to find vinegar with 10 to 20 percent acetic acid.

If you spray that, you can kill 80 to 100 percent of weeds top growth, found USDA research.

This method works best for a few weeds spread throughout the lawn. For larger spreads, its best to go with a safe, effective herbicide.
