Signs That The Lawn Needs To Be Watered:

How Much Water and Best Time to Water Lawn

There are some symptoms which give you the indication that it is high time you need to water the grass. Common observations are that the grass will have a dull green or bluish-grey color instead of the usual vibrant green. ;This shows that the grass is dehydrated.

Also, there is a term called Footprint Test. Try walking in one direction across the lawn. Upon looking back if you see your footprints that dont disappear quickly then that means the grass is stressed and needs moisture.

Amount of Water:

The amount of water to provide will vary from lawn to lawn. This depends on the amount of shade and type of soil that you are using.

  • If your lawn is shaded, then you probably will not require much watering each time. This is because the grass will be able to keep the moisture.
  • The same rule applies if you use clay as soil. It can hold in water longer.
  • But if you are using porous or sandy soil you will need more water. These drain very quickly.
  • The place you live will also determine how much water should be given. Not everywhere rainfall is the same, and drought and humidity levels are important factors to be noted. Grass requires more water in drought and low humidity regions.

What Time Of Day Is Best For Watering

It is best to water your lawn very early in the morning around 5 am before the sun is up. This give the grass time to absorb the water before the heat of the day hits.

If you water during the day while the sun is out, the sun will burn off a lot of the water before it gets to the roots. Also, the droplets that are left on the blades of grass can act like a magnifying glass and burn the blades. This is the last thing you would want to happen.

The reason you should not water at night is because the water will sit on the grass overnight which encourages fungi to grow. Fungi can infect your lawn with a disease called leaf spots. This is very unattractive.

Watering Your Lawn Automatically

Best Time to Water Grass

There are many different ways to efficiently and automatically water your lawn. There are a few factors you should take into account. Ask yourself the following questions: How much water will I need? How large an area do I need to cover? What shape is my lawn? Is there anything nearby that cant get wet?

Here are a few popular types of sprinklers to consider:

  • In-ground sprinklers These systems can be expensive, but are highly efficient. The sprinkler heads pop up automatically to water, and pop right back down when the watering is done, delivering a precise amount of water.
  • Pulsating sprinklers This type shoots out water horizontally in a powerful stream, covering a large area easily. Grassroots get the level of moisture they need quickly. However, the pulsing might be too intense for newly seeded or sodded lawns.
  • Oscillating sprinklers These are a good alternative for newly seeded lawns, since the force of the water is weaker, and you still get good coverage.
  • Hose-end sprinklers These traditional sprinklers are the most common and come in many different types.

Make sure your automatic sprinkler is doing its job, when it needs to do its job. If the forecast calls for a lot of rain, adjust the settings accordingly. Also, make sure it isnt pointed at the streetyou dont want to soak any passersby.

More Lawn Watering Advice

It is extremely important that a newly seeded lawn be kept moist but NOT SATURATED, until the seeds begin to grow. After the seeds have germinated and have begun to establish a root system, reduce the frequency of watering. Applying too much water will only inhibit germination and promote disease. As you reduce the watering frequency you should also increase the amount of water applied each time.

In 6-8 weeks after planting seed, you can treat your lawn like an established lawn.

The Best Time To Water Grass

Regardless of the type of grass you are growing, the best time to water your lawn is very early in the morning before it gets hot. Most of the water will have time to soak down to the roots and the grass blades will dry quickly, preventing disease problems. Watering in the early morning hours also keeps the lawn cooler during the hottest part of the day, which means less stress on the grass. If you can’t make it out first thing in the morning, late afternoon between 4-6pm is the next best time for watering. Just don’t water at night; a lawn that stays wet all night long is the perfect breeding ground for growing fungus. Keep in mind that you don’t always have to water your lawn. Lawns are resilient; healthy, properly cared-for lawns can survive weeks without water by going dormant , then recover once the rain returns.

How Much To Water Your Lawn

Watering the proper amount is criticaloverdo it, and your grass, your water bill, and the environment will suffer. The amount of water you need is generally 1 to 1.5 inches per week, but it can vary depending on your grass type, the climate you live in, your soil type, and the age of your lawn.

Established Lawns

Watering deeply, but infrequently, leads to stronger root development and drought-resistance than watering briefly every day. You can break up these waterings into twice a week during most of the year, or three times a week during the hot summer months.

Newly Seeded or Sodded Lawns

To encourage proper growth, newly seeded or sodded lawns need moisture in the top inch of their soil, but not so much that they turn soggy. Instead of watering a few times a week, you will need to take a mister and gently spray the newly seeded areas once to two times a day, depending on the weather.

As the seeds germinate, keep the top 2 inches of soil moist. Once the grass grows to a 3-inch mowing height, you can reduce watering to twice a week. Then, you should soak the soil down 6-8 inches, like you would an established lawn.

Follow these eight tips for healthy grass with a deep, strong root system.

Proper watering is as important to maintaining a lush, green lawn. Too little water and the grass will shrivel up and die; too much water and itll become over-saturated and die. Watering a lawn seems like a simple enough task, but for most of us knowing the best time to water your grassand how long to water your lawncan be confusing.

To provide you with a time-proven, easy-to-follow strategy for watering lawns, we contacted lawn care expert Matt Maurer, owner of PureLawn Lawn Services, with branches in Cincinnati and Dayton, Ohio. Matt shared with us the following eight DIY-friendly tips for growing a resilient, healthy lawn with a deep, strong root system.

The absolute best time to water your lawn is the early morning, before 10 a.m., says Maurer. Cooler temperatures and calm breezes help keep evaporation to a minimum. And watering in the morning keeps the turf cooler during the hottest parts of the day, which means less stress on the grass.

As a general rule, you should water long enough to moisten the soil down to about 6 inches, which is the average depth of a healthy grass-root system. It takes about one inch of water to properly hydrate normal lawns to that depth. But, Maurer warns, “Each lawn has different soil. You have to water for your specific property.” There are a few ways to determine whether your lawn is getting the right amount of water.

Do You Need To Worry About Water Runoff

Watch for runoff during the watering period. It is very possible that your lawn will not be able to soak up the water as fast as your sprinkler is putting it on the lawn. If this occurs shut off the sprinkler for an hour and then turn it on again. If you have an automatic system, have it cycle through the stations again.

Also, remember that sloped areas will have more tendencies for runoff. The best times to water your lawn is in the early morning or early evening when there is generally less wind and heat. The least desirable times are in the heat of the afternoon, when water evaporates too quickly and very late in the evening, which can cause the lawn to stay wet all night. This may encourage disease development.

As each lawn area is unique, there are no formulas or automatics for determining a watering schedule. Keep in mind that fenced lawn areas and shaded turf generally requires less water than do lawns in full sun. The best schedules are those determined by observing the appearance of your lawn.

Lawns that are watered sufficiently generally are healthy and uniform in color and growth. Whereas lawns that are under-watered will typically be uneven, with areas of poor or little growth. Often a poorly designed irrigation system or plugged or damaged sprinkler heads causes this condition. These problems are frequently identified when a can test is conducted.
