How To Take Care Of Clover
Clover requires different care techniques than regular grass. Its fairly simple to learn how to maintain it and take care of it properly.
Its usually a good idea to plant clover in the early part of the spring, between mid-March and mid-April. If you dont get around to it in the spring, you can do it in the fall instead, but summer is a tough time to start a lawn from seed.
One of the difficulties of planting clover seed comes form how tiny the seeds are. This is why many people will mix it with something like sand, sawdust, or soil. This will help you spread it more evenly than you would be able to otherwise.
Once youve planted clover in your lawn, water it daily until germination, and then for 2-3 weeks after your seedlings sprout.

- Dont use herbicides if you have a significant amount of clover in your lawn. Many will harm it.

Getting Rid Of Clover Using Chemicals Products
1. Use Fertilizers that are Rich in Nitrogen
Since clover thrives on a low-nitrogen environment, using a nitrogen-rich fertilizer is a useful option to get rid of them. Directly spray the nitrogen-rich fertilizer on the clover, and it will be gone before you know it. For a more effective result, apply the fertilizer in early spring, which will prevent future growth.
2. Try Treating Clover with Herbicide
A herbicide is a type of pesticide that quickly terminates unwanted weeds. It only disrupts weed growth and keeps surrounding lawn grass unharmed. If misused, however, it can destroy other plants and some insects like bees, so it is best to apply it to the clover directly, once a month.
3. Burn Clover with Ammonia
Many experienced gardeners recommend applying ammonia to clover. But like herbicides, the chemicals in ammonia are also harmful to surrounding plants and insects. Therefore, you must apply ammonia directly to the clover. Use it only once every month.

Why Is There So Much Clover In My Lawn
There are multiple reasons you could have clover in your lawn, most of which have to do with your soil condition and soil fertility.
- Wrong Soil pH: The alkaline or acidic soil of the soil is measured by its pH. This is usually between 6.0 and 7.0 for most lawns. If your lawns soil is overly acidic, grass will struggle to grow, while clover and other broadleaf weeds will thrive. How To Get Rid Of Yellow Clover
After dandelion, yellow clover is the most common type of weed that you may find in your lawn. It grows very aggressively and hampers the growth of grass and plants in the yard. If not controlled in time, it starts flowering and produces seeds that keep it regrowing.
You also need to identify if youre dealing with yellow clover or yellow woodsorrel. One way you can tell the difference is by looking at the leaves and foliage of the plant. Yellow Clover has much darker leaves that are a bit smaller than yellow woodsorrel.
Yellow Clover has interconnected roots that have several plants growing from a single source. To get started, you use a weed removal tool to uproot it from its root. While pulling, make sure you dig deeper into the ground and avoid breaking off the roots.
It may be possible to physically remove the yellow clover with its root if you have a small lawn, but in a large yard, this approach may not be practical.
In that case, you can use a herbicide such as Bonide Ready to use clover and other weed killers that kill the yellow clover without damaging the grass or other plants.
You can also apply high nitrogen into the soil during the spring and fall. As yellow clover-like to grow in a low nitrogen environment, the high nitrogen level in the soil prevents the growth of yellow clover.

Best Post Emergent Herbicides
Post-emergent herbicides are the best way to kill clover. Just keep in mind they require a little patience since it could take a couple weeks for the clover to die back.
My 3 go to products for killing clover are:
1.Ortho Weed B Gone Plus Crabgrass Control This is a great product to have on hand because of how easy it is to use. It comes with a battery operated wand so theres no need for a tank sprayer. Its the go to post emergent in my 3 product lawn care plan. It kills clover and other broad leaf weeds as well as some undesirable grasses such as crabgrass.
2.Ortho Weed B Gone Chickweed, Clover, Oxalis Kiler This is another Weed B Gone product that has different active ingredients which are more specific in targeting clover. If clover is your main problem and you dont have many other broad leaf weeds then this product is a great choice. It is sold as a concentrate so will require mixing with a tank sprayer.
3.Tenacity Tenacity is a concentrate that works a little differently then the other post-emergents. Rather then poisoning the plant, it works by blocking photosynthesis. With Tenacity, it might take 7-10 days before you begin to see whitening of the plant. Eventually it will look like your treated weeds are bleached.
Also note that you might see some temporary whitening of the desirable grasses but they will ultimately green back up.
