The most common place to get exposed to poison ivy or poison oak is in your own yard or garden. What options are available for dealing with these plants? Leaving them alone wont make the problem go away. Hitting poison ivy plants that are growing on the ground with a mower or weed-eater can spray the plants oily toxin on your skin.

If you kill poison ivy plants with herbicide, keep in mind that it takes 510 years for the toxic oil inside of the poison ivy plant to break down after the plant dies. Those dead poison ivy plants remain a hazard on your property for years to come!

Natural Methods To Remove Poison Ivy

• Hand-pull: Using waterproof, heavy-duty, or rubber gloves, hand-pull individual poison ivy plants from your yard. Hand-pulling requires consistency, as the extensive root system will allow the plant to regrow. Wash those gloves, thoroughly.
• Cutting or mowing: Persistent clipping or mowing of poison ivy near ground level may control poison ivy after a few years.

Use Boiling Water To Kill Poison Ivy

Boil water in a kettle and pour the boiling water over the lower leaves and base of the plant. This will cause the ivy to temporarily recede. This method works in a similar method to the natural weed killer spray, as it kills the leaves but the plant will come back from the root.

Using boiling water requires close proximity to the plant, so this method carries a higher risk than using a weed sprayer at a distance.

Triclopyr is an herbicide that will penetrate woody stems. Paint vine branches and stumps to cause the death of the growing plant. Repeated applications of Triclopyr will cause the roots of the poison ivy to die.

First, take an empty plastic spray bottle. You can buy these at affordable prices. Or if you have an old bottle, wash it and clean and antiseptic it.

Add half a cup of salt and two cups of bleaching to the bottle with lukewarm water

What If You Have A Lot Of Poison Ivy To Clear

For people who need to clear a large area of poison ivy such as a public park, school campus, or entire field digging it out by hand may be impractical and using an herbicide undesirable. Luckily, theres another option.

More and more people in this situation are turning to goats, which, like other farm animals, can eat poison ivy without getting a rash or developing any other health problems.

Goats have been used for many years to clear land of other invasive plant species, such as briars and kudzu. Now, a growing number of goat rental companies are coming to the rescue of land managers who need to eradicate large swaths of poison ivy.

The rental company typically fences off the area to be cleared and lets the goats loose to eat their fill until the poison ivy is gone. Still, because goats don’t get to the roots of the plants, they may have to make return visits.

Some goat rental companies have a minimum acreage for which theyll rent out goats, but with goat-grazing services a growing industry, even homeowners with modest yards may be able to find goats for hire in some areas.

So What Is The Best Method For Killing Poison Ivy

In my opinion, pulling poison ivy and removing it from the ground, roots and all, is the best method for permanently eliminating the noxious weed from your yard. All other methods do not attack the root structure of the plant or require repeated applications, allowing the plant to set rhizomes and spread via underground runners.

Get the proper safety equipment, plenty of garbage bags, and physically remove as much of the weed from trees and garden areas as you can. For woodland areas not easily accessed, glyphosate formulated for poison ivy is a good alternative.

After the top of the vine has been killed by cutting or by the use of an herbicide, pull the dead vines away from trees and dispose of them in plastic bags. The urushiol oil will remain active for up to five years on the remaining roots and branches.

Replace Poison Ivy With Other Plants

Once youre sure that the poison ivy is dead and that you wont have to treat the area again, its time to replace the poison ivy with more desirable plants.

Remember that poison ivy fills two ecological niches that we know of: Feeding songbirds with fall berries and protecting the soil as a ground cover.

Seek out plants that fill these niches.

Identify what you want to plant, whether thats berry-producing trees and shrubs or a ground cover, or both. Youll keep the rest of the area thick in wood chips. The wood chips are important!

Once established, the new plants should protect the area and keep poison ivy from creeping back in.

Replace poison ivy with other berry-producing plants for wildlife.

Berry-Production for Songbirds

Toby Hemenway gives a nice list of plants in Gaias Garden for wildlife fall berry production. Many of these berries are also edible for humans, so you decide how much to share! Youll have to research whether these plants grow in your area. Heres is a short list to give you some examples. It isnt a complete list of all options.

• American cranberry

Ground Covers

Keep the soil covered with one of the following ground covers so the poison ivy doesnt return.

Creeping Ground Covers

Its been suggested that since poison ivy is a creeper, it should be replaced by one. Examples are:

• Virginia creeper
• Native wisteria

Perennial Ground Cover

How to install plants

Dig a hole in the wood chips, fill with compost soil, and plant. Water well until established.

Define The Area Afflicted By Poison Ivy And Decide If Eradication Is Necessary

Look at where the poison ivy is growing and determine if eradication is actually necessary and worthwhile. Since eradicating it takes quite a bit of effort, trying to remove it from a large area is not realistic. If its in a forested area, can it be left there?

Stick to the areas that humans frequently use.

Is it getting in your way? Only seek to eradicate that which is directly encroaching on a walking path or other well-used area.

If youre looking to start a new garden and notice poison ivy, ask whether the proposed garden space can be placed elsewhere.

It may take some time to remove the urushiol oil, poison ivys rash-causing oil, from the area. The oil can remain long after the plant has been eradicated, so growing food crops might not be a wise choice, at least right away.

If the poison ivy is in an already established garden or tended yard area in which humans definitely come into contact with it, then its wise to eradicate it.

Wash Hands Gloves And Clothing Thoroughly

Once youve sprayed the poison ivy, be sure to wash your hands, gloves, and clothing thoroughly so that you get rid of any of the oil that makes poison ivy poisonous.

Immediately remove the clothing used and put in the laundry right away. You may need to use some of your spray to clean as the vinegar and degreaser in the detergent can help remove the oil.

How Does Poison Ivy Rash Spread

The rash created by contact with the urushiol spreads as the oil is spread. Scratching the rash spreads the oil, increasing the size of the original lesion. In addition, many people will touch their face and other body parts and spread the irritating oil to those locations.

It is vital to wash all areas in contact with poison ivy as soon as possible to stop the spread of the rash. It takes approximately 12 hours for the rash to begin forming after coming into contact with poison ivy leaves.

The rash formed by contact with urushiol oil on poison ivy leaves may spread if the oil is not removed. Scratching may spread the oil across the surface of the skin. It is vital to cleanse the affected area with a soap as soon as possible.

A Poison Ivycommunity Garden

For five years, I managed a community garden that was surrounded by woods on three sides. Poison ivy formed a barrier at the edge of the forest and caused more than a few irritating itches. It constricted childs play, delayed garden development, and keeping it at bay was beginning to be a losing battle.

Use A Goat To Remove Poison Ivy:

Goats are not harmed by poison ivy and absolutely love to chomp down on this plant. There are even goat rental services available to have a herd of up to ten goats sent to your yard for this specific purpose. Rates generally fall in the $200$500 range, so this is not a cheap option .

Goats will feed on all vegetation in the area, so this is not a good option if the poison ivy is growing in a location with plants you want to keep. Goats will also not destroy the root system of the plant, so there will be surviving stumps that will regenerate the following growing season.

Still, this is an all-natural and fun way to help clear out brush and poison ivy from an area with undergrowth!
