What Is Purple Deadnettle

Lawncare University – Problem Weeds

Purple deadnettle is a common annual weed that belongs to the mint family, which explains why its such a pest. Like other mints, purple deadnettle is an aggressive grower that spreads like wildfire anywhere it can get a foothold. Youll recognize it and its cousin, henbit, by their distinctive square stems that hold up an umbrella of tiny flowers and small pointed leaves reaching up to an inch long.

How To Get Rid Of Weeds In Your Lawn

Many people dream of a lush and green lawn to enjoy all summer long. But often this dream is dashed by weeds popping up between the blades of grass. Occasionally, the weeds can get out of control and overtake a yard. Some people worry about treating a weed crisis because they worry they may accidentally ruin their lawns. While a large number of weeds can be discouraging, there are solutions to kill weeds, not grass. Read on to learn how to kill weeds in your lawn without harming your grass.

Natural Methods For Weed Removal In Your Lawn

If you dont like the idea of using chemical herbicide on your lawn then here are some natural methods you can try:

Pulling Weeds By Hand

Sometimes, the traditional way is the best. If you only have 1 or 2 plants to remove, then weeding by hand is usually quick and effective.

Use a trowel to dig down around the plant and remove it from the ground. Make sure you take the roots as well.

If you want to make the job easier, you can use a weed puller. This tool allows you to stand as you pull the weeds out of the ground.

The main drawback of removing them by hand is that it takes a lot of hard work if you have a lawn full of weeds.

And because some lawn weeds grow back quickly if you leave any of the root system behind, it can be difficult to completely get rid of them without taking great care.

A common problem weed thats very difficult to control by hand once its well established in your yard is nutsedge.

Vinegar

Another natural method that people often recommend is vinegar. This burns the weed on contact, killing every part it touches. Pour it into a handheld sprayer and then apply it to all visible parts of the plant.

Youll have to use a strong acetic acid solution of somewhere between 10-20% concentration. Normal table vinegar isnt usually powerful enough for the job.

But there are two problems with using vinegar.

What Are Weeds With Yellow Flowers Called

Common lawn weeds with yellow flowers are dandelion, oxalis, purslane, and yellow sweet clover.

Weedy plants with yellow flowers may add bright colors to your lawn. But rather than ruining the appearance of healthy turfgrass, its best for plants with yellow flowers to grow in flower beds, not a lawn.

The Impact Of A Healthy Lawn

Purple Creeping Charlie Plant

A healthy lawn begets a healthy lawn, and the more time you put into creating an environment in your yard where grass is able to thrive, the fewer problems youll have with lawn weeds.

A very thick well maintained lawn will leave no gaps in the canopy where weeds can take root.

When the grass is thick, it will take in all of the sunlight and nutrients, which will block the weeds from thriving.

If you are environmentally conscious and care about the health of yourself and pets, not using chemicals is usually the better option, but Ill cover both choices here so you can make the best choice for your family and your lawn.

Awful Weeds And How To Kill Them

Wisteria in bloom. Photo: Steve Bender

What is a weed? A weed is any plant that’s growing where you don’t want it. Some weeds are ugly. Some are pretty. But nearly all share the nasty habit of growing out of control, coming up everywhere, and making you want to shut yourself in a dark room watching Wendy Williams trash Hollywood celebrities. That’s bad. How can you kill and prevent weeds and save your sanity? As always, ask Grumpy.

But be warned — if any of you are philosophically and intractably opposed to the use of garden chemicals no matter the situation, stop reading now. Because while Grumpy advocates minimal use of “chemicals” and recommends natural solutions whenever possible, some weeds cannot be controlled organically. I’m going to tell you what works, organic or not, and let you make the choice.

Awful Weed #1 — Wisteria

Japanese and Chinese wisteria are absolutely gorgeous in flower. So why do Southerners hate them so? Because these rampant vines smother, strangle, crush, and destroy everything around them. They spread by runners, seed, and suckers.

How to kill it: If it’s a small vine, spray it according to label directions with Roundup. If it’s a big one spraying won’t reach, cut through the trunk a foot from the ground and immediately paint the cut surface with Roundup or Brush Killer. Pouring 20% vinegar over the roots may kill a small one, but won’t work on a big one.

Smother Them With Grass

Removing Lawn Weeds

This step is better off done when the larger weeds are gone, but one of the best ways to get rid of weeds in your lawn is to let the grass outgrow them and deny them space to live!

You can do this by feeding your lawn the right fertilizer I highly recommend the Sunday Lawn Care subscription fertilizer plan.

Killing Violets In The Lawn

Getting rid of violets is no easy task. Hand-pulling violets wont get you very far due to their strong roots. Its very difficult to pull a violet without leaving at least some of the root in the ground, meaning its going to grow right back. Granular products dont work well on violets, either. Thats because not enough of the product will coat the leaves. Even if youre lucky enough to get a few flakes on the leaves, its not going to be effective enough to work. The key to killing violets in the lawn is a professional-grade broadleaf liquid herbicide that will stick to the leaves and ultimately knock wild violets back. This must be coupled with a long-term strategy, including spraying multiple times a year, particularly in the fall when certain products are able to be used in cooler temperatures.

In addition to spot treating the violets repeatedly from spring through fall, youll also want to focus on a lawn care program that encourages a healthy and thick lawn. Because violets thrive in sparse lawns, the thicker your lawn is, the more likely it will choke out these pesky weeds.

Thickening your lawn can be achieved with a program that incorporates regular fertilization, looks at improving the soil with necessary pH corrections, and includes aeration and overseeding every fall.

Common Lawn Weeds And How To Get Rid Of Them

Even the best-tended lawns come under attack from common weeds. Weed seeds float in on the wind, creeping weeds claim more territory, and weeds you thought you pulled quietly continue to grow. How well your lawn copes with the onslaught depends on the weeds involved, the response you choose and your lawns overall health. Understanding common lawn weeds and the options available to fight them can help you successfully combat the invasion.

To help simplify weed defense, weve charted 10 common lawn weeds, including their characteristics, type and how they spread, and most importantly- how to eliminate them. Weeds, like ornamental garden plants, can be annuals or perennials. Annual weeds, such as crabgrass, complete their entire life cycle in a single growing season, and then die, leaving seeds behind to continue the legacy. Perennial weeds, such as dandelions, come back year after year from their roots, and distribute new seeds to boot. Weeds can also be grass-like, broadleaf or sedge. Choosing the right weed control product requires understanding the weed you want to fight and its stage of growth. Pre-emergent weed controls, sometime called preventers, work to keep weed seeds from germinating and developing. Post-emergent weed controls fight weeds that have already germinated and emerged from the soil.
