Spring Lawn Care Tip #4 Get Loose By Aerating
When it comes to getting green grass in the summer, I found that aerating your lawn in the spring is a big deal, especially here. If you dont have someone who does it regularly for you, theyll be a company walking around The Meadows in a few weeks to offer this service. You can also rent a machine at Home Depot or Lowes. Aerating helps promote airflow in your grass, but it also helps loosen the soil so your lawn can absorb more moisture.
How And When To Aerate Your Soil
Aerating lawn should take place in spring, at the beginning of the vegetation, and in autumn, when you’ll fertilize the soil. Basically, holes of 2 to 3 inches deep and 0.5 to 0.75 inches in diameter, and about 2 3 inches apart are convenient. In order to aerate your grass, there are 3 products providing convenient solutions. The first one is the spike aerator. A spike aerator makes use of a roller with solid spikes to poke the soil. The second object is the plug aerator. Plug aerators are composed of hollow tines in order to remove plugs of soil. By this way, the tools leave small gaps in the ground. If you only have a small area of grass, this operation can be carried out thanks to the aerating pads attached to the shoes and which are provided with spikes like the rollers intended for larger areas. You can then ventilate your lawn while taking a few steps.

Avoid Creating Run Off
If water is starting to puddle or run off, its time to turn off or move the sprinkler to another spot. If it started to run off before you could give it a good soak, then turn the sprinkler off for 15-20 minutes to allow the water to soak in before turning it back on again. Hoselinks Oscillating Sprinkler can be beneficial in this scenario as the constant movement gives the soil a brief break in which to absorb the water before more is sprayed on. This type of sprinkler is also fully adjustable, allowing it to reach right across the lawn or concentrate on one small space. If in doubt, test it out! Its always better to trial watering methods to see what works best on your lawn.

Mow Your Lawn Correctly
Mowing is a seemingly simple task that you probably think you cant get wrong. But your mowing habits can have a big impact on your lawns performance. Mowing properly can lead to thicker grass.
One of the largest mistakes people make is mowing their grass too short. Mowing too short can put unnecessary stress on your lawn. This can cause a dull green or yellow color, which you dont want. It can also increase the likelihood for weeds — additional headaches you dont need.
The goal is to cut no more than one-third of your grass blades at any one time. Ideal mowing timing is weekly and ideal mowing height is in between 3.5 and 4 inches, depending on your lawn type. Your mower blades should be sharpened to ensure a clean cut.

Top Tips For A Healthy Lawn
A green and healthy lawn is easy to achieve with a bit of work. A little effort now will save you a lot of effort later, because healthy lawns are less vulnerable to pests, weeds, drought, and other problems.
Follow these seven tips:
Fill Bare Lawn Patches
Rather than letting bare patches spoil the look of your lawn it’s easy to sow grass seed over the raked soil. Alternatively, make fillers from unused turf. When reshaping the lawn, collect up the strips and place them 5cm apart in a compost-filled seed tray, then grow them on outside or in a cold frame.
To replace the bare patch, cut out a square or rectangle around the area and, using a hand trowel, dig up the soil in the rectangle to whatever depth of soil your new turf strip is. Gently lay the turf, cut to fit, over the patch. Firm it down so that there are no gaps and your new turf is no higher or lower than your existing lawn.

Tip No : Mow Only The Top One
The top one-third of a blade of grass is thin and leafy, decomposes quickly when cut and can contribute up to one-third of the nitrogen your lawn needs . While its decomposing, this light layer of clippings also helps slow water evaporation and keeps weeds from germinating. Check out these handy mowing tips.
But the bottom two-thirds of a blade of grass is tough, stemmy and slow to decompose, contributing to thatch. When thick enough, thatch prevents sunlight, air, water and nutrients from reaching the soil. Cutting more than the top third also shocks grass roots and exposes stems, which tend to burn in direct sunlight.
So if two inches is your target grass height, cut it when it reaches three inches. Since grass grows at different rates at different times of the year, every Saturday isnt necessarily the best time to mow. Sometimes you need to mow it more, other times less. The ideal length for cool-climate grasses is three to four inches for warm-climate, one to two inches.
Mow when the grass is dry and avoid mowing in the heat of the day when youre more likely to stress the grass and yourself.

With the right approach, your lawn can be healthy enough to resist disease, weeds, and drought on its own. Water Your Lawn Regularly
Water is the most essential factor of a lush lawn. Its definitely a basic but thats not to say its importance isnt often forgotten. When things get busy in the warmer months, or you go on vacation, regular watering of your lawn may go undone. But lawns require one to two inches of water each week and even more when its hot, due to increased evaporation.
If its a period of drought, that means physically getting out there and watering the lawn with sprinklers if you dont have an irrigation system. Your lawn care company should remind you of the importance of regular watering if they suspect that is why your lawn is not as green as it could be.
Use A Sprinkler In The Morning
The next key ingredient to a healthy lawn is adequate water. Its not necessary to water your lawn every day unless you have new grass seeds growing. The ideal watering schedule is about two or three times a week.
To get the most out of your watering routine, use a sprinkler that covers the entire area of the lawn. Time your watering to occur in the early morning, between 6 and 10 AM. Watering during the middle of the day or at night may not produce the best results.
