I know what youre thinking: Crabgrass cant possibly take over my entire lawn, can it? Unfortunately, if left untreated, it can. Crabgrass is annual, which means if you dont treat it, it returns every year. Moreover, its more than just an unsightly weed crabgrass steals nutrients from your lawn.
What Does Quackgrass Look Like
Quackgrass is a fast growing, grassy weed. The blades are wide and lime green in color. Its best identified by its claw-like auricles which are structures that wrap around the stem towards the top of the sheath. Another key feature of Quackgrass is its extensive root and rhizome system.
What are auricles you might ask? Auricles are membranous tissue that reside on the leaves. The auricles on quackgrass make it is easier to because they are very well developed and you can see them quite easily which is not always the case with other grassy weeds.
Whats The Best Way To Keep Crabgrass From Regrowing
The best way to keep crabgrass from regrowing after killing their seeds is proper turf management to promote healthy, competitive grass. These practices include:
- Mowing the lawn higher: Cutting grass taller blocks sunlight from reaching the ground to favor crabgrass seeds germination. Raise your mower deck higher when mowing.
- Fertilizing the grass: Fertilizers provide nutrients to grass to grow them healthy and dense, thus becoming more competitive than crabgrass. Apply fertilizers when the grass is actively growing.
Slow-release fertilizers are recommended to feed the turf longer. Remember to apply the recommended amount of fertilizer to avoid burning the grass.
- Fill bare spots on lawns Bare spots create spaces that allow crabgrass to growOverseed bare spaces with new grass seeds to prevent the weeds from growing.
- Grow more competitive grass species Tall fescues and Kentucky bluegrass are more competitive than annual ryegrass and bluegrass because they are perennial grasses. Plant more competitive grasses like fescues to discourage crabgrass from growing.
- Eliminate pests and treat diseases: Pests and diseases thin grasses and make them susceptible to weed invasion. Use recommended fungicides to treat diseases and remove pests from the lawn.

What Is The Difference Between Dallisgrass And Crabgrass
These two weeds look so alike that even some professionals misdiagnose them. But the difference between dallisgrass and crabgrass lies in the seed head. The seed head of crabgrass is very fine and typically small whereas dallisgrass seed heads are larger and have some small black spots. They also grow off the side of the stem.
The way that crabgrass grows and spread is often crab-like in appearance but dallisgrass is usually more circular.The two also have slightly different shades of color. As we mentioned dallisgrass is usually grayer or a darker shade of green and crabgrass is usually lighter green in color. But if you dont have the two to compare side-by-side, this may be a difficult feature to use for distinguishing crabgrass vs. dallisgrass.Of course, the difference stems beyond looks. Dallisgrass is incredibly hard to get rid of, whereas crabgrass can be fairly easily controlled, particularly if you are diligent about applying pre-emergent. Both weeds do have post-emergent controls which can control them after theyve grown, but this can get expensive and require multiple treatments.
Crabgrass Vs Bermuda Grass
Bermuda Grass
Bermuda grass comes from African Savannah, and was brought into the US as a hardy and drought-tolerant crop in 1807.Crabgrass originated in Europe and Eurasia, and was brought to the US as a forage crop in 1849.
Both are hardy grasses that invade all kinds of garden under favorable conditions. However, Bermuda grass is sometimes used as a hardy grass for lawns, but crabgrass is mostly dreaded by everyone.
Bermuda grass can tolerate drought and stays green the whole year. Its leaf blades are light greenish-gray with purple-colored stems, and produce a grass bedding for the garden.Crabgrass is yellowish-green and spreads out in star pattern. It doesnt present a grass bedding of any sort.
Bermuda grass survives underground even in dry conditions and re-sprouts when there is enough moisture. It grows well in moisture and warm conditions, and re-sprouts from roots unlike crabgrass.Crabgrass needs a temperature above 55 to survive and germinate. It dies out in fall and re-sprouts from the seeds in spring.
Crabgrass can be seen almost everywhere in gardens, golf course, orchards, vineyards, roadside, nurseries, etc. A healthy, mowed, well-fertilized, and well-watered garden is the key to keeping it weed-free. Happy gardening!

How To Climinate Quackgrass
Quackgrass is actually more difficult to eliminate than Crabgrass. Unlike Crabgrass, Quackgrass is a perennial that does not die each season. The best way to handle Quackgrass organically is to overseed the area with desirable grasses, mow regularly, and fertilize organically to encourage the healthy grasses to outcompete the Quackgrass. If it’s really bothering you, you can do a spot chemical spray, with something like Roundup, and reseed the entire area. Roundup contains chemicals and will kill any surrounding grass, in addition to the Quackgrass. Use sparingly if you decide to go this route.
Spray Stubborn Patches Of Crabgrass
Spray post-emergence herbicide directly on crabgrass after it has sprouted. Pulling is equally effective, but if the roots are deeply embedded in your lawn, it may be tough to pull them out without pulling grass chunks, too. Its not worth spraying a post-emergence product on crabgrass that has gone to seed. It takes about two weeks for the herbicide to work, which is about how long it takes the plant to finish its seeding process. If it has gone to seed, youre better off waiting for next spring and applying a pre-emergence product then.
Post-emergence herbicides are most effective when the soil is moist and the plants are dry. Read the post-emergent crabgrass killer label for specific instructions. Typically you apply it with a hand pump sprayer. Its best to apply it on a hot day when theres low wind. If temperatures are too low, the product may be ineffective. Unless the crabgrass is young, youll probably have to reapply post-emergent crabgrass killer a few days later to kill the plant.
Crabgrass in the fall. Dont waste your money on a post-emergence herbicide in the fall as a route on how to kill crabgrass, when the temperatures are falling. The herbicide wont be effective and the plant will soon die anyway.

Reducing The Distribution Of Seeds
Aggressive seed distribution allows crabgrass to spread through a large area, quickly dominating your lawn. One of the best ways to eliminate crabgrass without the help of chemicals is to prevent seed distribution.
When you hand-pull grass patches from the ground, place them in a plastic bag and throw these bags immediately into the trashcan or landfill. This way, the seeds are contained with no way to disperse through your lawn.
If you prefer to compost as much organic material as possible, you can tie up the bags and leave them out in the sun from 4 to 6 weeks. This method ensures that the seeds have been killed by the heat, leaving the remnants safe to add to your compost heap.
What Does Crabgrass Look Like: With Runners & Seed Stalks
Crabgrass will send out stolons, or runners, to conquer more territory. As the stolons, or branches, spread out, they often make angular turns. They can take on the appearance of crab legs, hence the name.
These shoots, or runners, can put down new roots at each node, if it is the large or hairy crabgrass variety. This makes it more difficult to remove the weed as it gets older and more established.
At each node or joint new branches can grow out and up. This can greatly increase the size of the original crab grass clump. It also allows the crab grass to very effectively smother the lawn area that surrounds it.
These images show how the stolon puts roots down and branches up. Eventually it will put out a tall seed stalk. More seed stalks will shoot up from the center of the plant.

How To Control Crabgrass And Other Annual Weed Grasses
Because it is an annual weed, crabgrass is controllable with pre-emergent applied in the spring. After the pre-emergent is on the lawn, it will come in contact with any seeds that are starting to sprout, stopping them from growing.
Pre-emergent needs to be applied at the right time in order to be effective. To prevent crabgrass from growing, pre-emergent should be applied in mid-April to May.

Controlling Crabgrass Vs Dallisgrass
One of the biggest reasons to properly identify which weed youre dealing with is the fact that wed likely take a different approach for each.
As we mentioned, crabgrass can usually be controlled relatively easily with a good weed control program.But because dallisgrass is so difficult to control, we are going to be much more likely to recommend sodding.
If its a small patch of dallisgrass here or there or a relatively minor problem, then we could discuss using controls. However, if your lawn is overrun by dallisgrass, youre going to be in a lot better shape talking about a sod solution where we come in and manually remove the areas with dallisgrass and simply start over. Youll have an instant lawn and get rid of your dallisgrass problem without waiting.So often, treating dallisgrass can be really time-consuming. It requires multiple treatments and this hardy weed is very tough to knockback. So, for that reason, many homeowners do prefer to go the sod route.The truth is, even when were effective with weed control, youre still going to be left with bare spots in your yard. The success of killing weeds means leaving beyond spots where those weeds have died off. Thats another reason why homeowners often end up just choosing to go with sod.

Deep Water Your Lawn To Crowd Out Crabgrass
Crabgrass loves having plenty of moisture in the soil to germinate. On the other hand, since its resistant to drought, it can withstand changes in soil moisture more effectively than most types of lawn grass. Watering your lawn often promotes shallow root growth, which means your grass will be more vulnerable to damage during the dry, hot months. Your yard may develop patches where crabgrass can grow. Its helpful to water your lawn thoroughly and infrequently so that your grass develops deeper roots and crowds out weeds.
Crabgrass Vs Fescue Quick Reference:
- Crabgrass is an annual grass that is lime green or lighter colored and typically germinates in June and July.
- Crabgrass can easily be controlled after it emerges using either Drive XLR8 or Tenacity. Both of these pesticides kill crabgrass, but Drive XLR8 is also an excellent bindweed killer.
- Coarse tall fescue is a perennial grass that is a dark green colored grass type that grows in the lawn all year long.
- Coarse tall fescue cannot be selectively controlled, meaning it cannot sprayed without killing the desirable turfgrass. The only way to kill coarse tall fescue is to kill it with a product like roundup and then reseed the damaged areas.

How Do I Know If I Have Crabgrass
Youre more likely to notice you have crabgrass in summer. It grows faster in hot weather when cool-season grass growth is suppressed. Crabgrass has coarse-textured, lime green conspicuous leaves, easily noticeable when growing among dark green turf on the lawn. The stem is prostrate and has roots in the internodes. Some crabgrass varieties form clumps.
Crabgrass is an opportunistic, competitive weed that grows when the turf is thin, and there are empty spots on the lawn. Understanding these features will help you know when to apply crabgrass preventer.
When the turf is mowed too short, crabgrass seeds will germinate in favorable temperatures and thrive on the lawn. The weeds are low growing and tolerate a short mowing height of less than 1 ½ inches.
Less competitive grasses like annual ryegrass are more vulnerable to crabgrass invasions because crabgrass grows faster than them.
When the grass is under fertilized, it becomes thin and less competitive. Underfertilized lawns present the optimum space for diseases, pests, and weeds like crabgrass.

Crabgrass has a prostrate growth habit. It lies low on the ground and survives 1 ½ inch mowing height. Its leaves are coarse-textured, lime-green, or yellowish-green. The seedheads are fingerlike and have racemes or spikes that emerge from different points at the tip of the stem.
Crabgrass has a rolled vernation. The leaf sheaths and leaves of crabgrass can be hairy or hairless. You can also identify crabgrasss large, membranous, and toothed ligule. The ligule is toothed, membranous, and large. Additionally, it has no auricles.
Crabgrass has numerous varieties. Smooth crabgrass and hairy crabgrass are the most common.
Smooth crabgrass , also called small crabgrass, is more prevalent than large crabgrass. Its leaves and leaf sheath have no hairs, although the lower part of the stem has few hairs. The base of its stem is purplish. Smooth crabgrass lies lower to the ground than large crabgrass.
Meanwhile, large crabgrass , also called hairy crabgrass, has hairs on its leaves surface and the leaf sheath. Large crabgrass seedlings appear light green and are more upright than smooth crabgrass seedlings.

Examples Of Coarse Tall Fescue
There are a number of types of coarse tall fescue grasses and this is an example of this ugly clumping grass. This grass can only be killed with a weed and grass killer.
Coarse tall fescue is uncontrollable with selective controls. Only a non-selective control like Roundup can kill tall fescue, but it will also kill the desirable grasses around it.
This is a closeup of a coarse tall fescue grass blade. This grass type is not to be confused with turf type tall fescue, which is an attractive tall fescue blend.
Can I Treat Crabgrass In The Summer
You can still treat crabgrass in summer but it is not a very good idea. This is because by the time you get to summertime, crabgrass seeds are beginning to germinate and it will be harder to get rid of the many colonies.
The most opportune time to treat the crabgrass on your lawn is in the spring. Around this time, the weed has not produced any seeds yet. This way, you are sure that after you get rid of the crabgrass weed, it will not return since there are no germinating seeds on your lawn.
But for any reason you did not get rid of the weed in spring, use a post-emergent herbicide and pre-emergent herbicide during the summer. Pre-emergent herbicide prevents the seeds from germinating in spring.
