What Type Of Oil Do You Put In A Lawn Mower

How to Change Lawn Mower Oil
  • Pete Ortiz

Lawn mower engines are small engines that are very different from car engines. Does that mean lawn mowers use different oil than cars? This is a fair question that many people ask themselves while reaching for a bottle of engine oil at the store. Can your lawn mower use car oil? What type of oil should you put in your lawn mower?

The most basic answer is you need to check your owners manual, and if you no longer have your lawn mowers manual, you should search for it online. Most lawn mowers can safely take SAE 30 engine oil. But not all of them can. The type of oil that you can put in your lawn mower will depend on the brand, the size of the engine, your climate, and a few other factors.

How To Check Your Oil Level

  • Remove the dipstick cap, apply some pressure and twist counter clockwise.
  • Remove dipstick and wipe with a clean rag so reading will be accurate.
  • Before reinstalling the dipstick, make sure the teeth on the cap match the grooves on the dipstick tube.
  • Apply some pressure and twist clockwise to reinstall dipstick cap.
  • Remove the cap again and view oil level towards the bottom of the dipstick blade.
  • Oil level should be between the full and add marks.
  • If oil level is low, pour a few ounces at a time to avoid overfilling.
  • Allow enough time for the oil to settle before rechecking the oil level.

When Should You Change Lawn Mower Oil

Manufacturer specifications should be the only guide you use to determine when to change your lawn mower oil. Most lawn mowers need a regular oil change however, you may come across special engines that have a label that says no oil change. The label doesnt necessarily mean that you should not change the oil on your lawn motor engine. All you need to do is check whether the oil seems to be running out, then add the required amount as per the manufacturers instructions.

That said, you should change your lawn motor oil at least once every spring or summer depending on whichever one of the two comes first. Alternatively, you can change the oil after every 55 hours of mow time. Once you have changed the oil, ensure to maintain the regular routine for a healthy engine. If you have a new lawnmower engine, change the oil after the first 5 hours of operation.

Overall, the frequency of oil change in your lawnmower is determined by tough conditions such as high temperatures, wet grass, rough or hilly terrain, and heavy dust. So, ensure to check your oil levels and the oil color to know when to change the oil.

S To Checking Your Small Engine Level

  • Carefully Remove the dipstick cap, put some pressure and twist to open .
  • Carefully remove the dipstick and clean its rag to get the most accurate reading.
  • Return the dipstick to its former position after adding add marks.
  • Remove the dipstick again and read the level of oil at the bottom of the dipstick blade.
  • You will see the oil level between the full and add marks.
  • If the oil level is low, you can add a few ounces up to the required level.
  • Run the engine for about 5 minutes before repeating the process again.
  • You should repeat this procedure as often as possible especially if the machine has not been in use for a while. The reason that could make oil levels go down is numerous and running the small engine with low levels of oil will lead to engine damage.

You should also check the oil color during this maintenance routine. Oil darkens after continued use because of impurities in the engine system including dirt. If the oil completely darkens before the oil change date, you may consider changing it early at 30 hours for a small one and 70 hours for a bigger machine.

If you notice the oil darkening faster than expected, you can reach out to a Briggs & Stratton machine dealer near you for consultation. It could be a sign of something amiss in your machine which you should immediately change.

What Kind Of Oil Should I Use In My Lawn Mower

The safest bet when it comes to oil will always be to use the kind of oil your lawn mower manufacturer recommends in the operator or engine manual for your particular mower. While SAE 30 motor oil is commonly recommended for lawn mower engines, each engine manufacturers recommendation may be unique and might include recommendations based on your local climate. For these reasons, it is best to follow the advice as specified in your manual.

    Why Check The Oil

Because the correct quantity and quality of the oil are critically important to the life of the engine, some mowers are fitted with a safety switch that wont allow the mower to start if the oil level is low. Its a fantastic idea, lots of otherwise good engines are lost due to a lack of oil. Unfortunately, not all mowers have this feature, so its important to check your oil regularly, an easy way to remember. check the oil every time you fill the gas tank. An incorrect oil level can damage your engine beyond economic repair. An oil level thats too low causes excessive heat, friction, and premature wear or complete seizure of the engine.

An oil level thats too high can:

    • Cause engine to smoke
    • Cause no start
    • Aerate the oil reducing its ability to cool and lubricate

Lawnmower engines that dont have an oil filter generally dont have an oil pump. This means they employ the splash method of lubrication. An overfull oil level can be especially harmful to these engines.

What Kind Of Oil For My Riding Lawn Mower

I hear this question quite often from my customers, or they ask can I use regular car motor oil in my riding lawn mower? There is a simple answer with some basic knowledge of oil types, and whether or not your riding mower has an oil filter.

If your riding mower has an oil filter you can in fact use car motor oil as long as you are using SAE 10W-30 or SAE 30W. If your engine does not have an oil filter it is best to use 10W-30 or 30W Non-Detergent motor oil.

The Characteristics Of 10w30 And Its Benefits

What Kind of Oil Do I Put in My Ariens Lawn Mower?

Again, since 10w30 has two different viscosity ratings based on temperature, it is a multi-grade oil. While hot it is rated at 30 viscosity, and when cold it is rated at 10 viscosity. This characteristic lets the oil adapt to whatever situation the engine is in. Because of this, most larger engines, like those on passenger vehicles, use multi-grade oils.

A big reason for this is that engines need lubricating even when it is really cold outside or the engine is just starting. If you live somewhere that gets cold during the mowing season, it might not be a bad idea to use a multi-grade oil like this that has some flexibility.

How Much Oil Does A Lawnmower Take

It all depends on the size and type of engine. You can use a dipstick, usually located near the oil cap, to determine how much oil your lawn mower needs.

For this reason, you need to know where your oil dipstick is before starting up your lawnmower for the first time in spring or after winter storage. Each manufacturer has its specifications for refilling the motor with oil.

    Can I Use 10w

It is an excellent choice to use SAE 10W-30 instead of SAE 30. If you do not have any cost-related constraints, you should turn to 10W-30, as this gives your engine an even better cold start performance.

SAE-30 is a single-grade oil whose viscosity does not alter when starting hot or cold. 10W-30 has a cold starting viscosity of 10. This rating makes it an extremely preferred option for use in winters where the engine is cold, and a low viscosity level is required for lubrication.

How Much Oil Is The Right Amount

Essentially, you need to check your users manual to know the type of oil your machine is compatible with.

However, on some manuals, the amount of oil needed by the machine is not always included which leaves us wondering how much oil to put in lawn mower and how do we know we put enough already?

Actually, the amount of oil needed by the mower depends on the size and type of the engine.

For most walk-behind mowers, if you are to change oil, you may need to fill up your mower up to around .6 of a liter.

In most Honda lawn mowers, their oil capacities are commonly .55 liters.

But then again, dont just rely on the amount of oil recommended by some companies but rely more on your measuring tool which in this case is simply the dipstick.

Why? Because this will be your real-time measuring tool to actually know the exact level of oil thats inside your oil reservoir.

    Recommended Types Of Oil:

How to Perform a Traditional Oil Change | John Deere 100 Series Lawn Tractor

Below are some of the most commonly used types of oil for Toro lawnmowers. At a certain temperature, each type performs its lubrication in the best way.

    1. SAE-30:

SAE-30 is by far the most widely used motor oil for small engine types such as lawnmowers, chainsaws, and snowblowers. SAE-30 implies a viscosity rating of 30 as provided by the Society of Automotive Engineers . The oil classification varies from 0 to 50. Extremely viscous oils have a higher performance capability in warm environments. Thats why you should choose to use SAE-30 engine oil if youre based in a warmer climate.

    2. SAE 10W-30:

SAE 10W-30 is a multigrade oil. Multigrade means that it provides a variable range of viscosity. 10W means the oil has a viscosity level of 10 when the engine is cold and 30 when the engine is hot. The benefit of using SAE-30 is that it offers better efficiency when the weather is cold. However, using this grade of oil can increase your oil consumption.

If temperature differences are substantial in your area, you can choose to use a multigrade oil.

    3. Synthetic 10W-30 SAE:

The synthetic version of the SAE 10W-30 results in much better engine performance. It operates at a variable temperature range, increases the cold weathers start, and reduces your oil consumption. You should use this grade of oil if you want to improve your Toro engines service life.

    4. 5W-30 SAE:

    5. Vanguard 15W-30:

3 Dependence On The Environmental Circumstances

The Craftsman 550 Series lawnmower manual specifies using detergent-type engine oil. The grades of viscosity normally depend on the air temperature. If you operate your mower mostly at a temperature above 32 degrees Fahrenheit, use SAE 30 weight oil. If you want to use the mower at a location where the temperature also gets below 32 degrees, use SAE 5W-30 multi-weight oil. Suppose your craftsman mower is used at a location that sees temperatures between 32 and 122 degrees Fahrenheit. Use a 10W30 multi-viscosity oil.

The oil numbers represent the oils viscosity at different temperature ranges. Multi-weight oil can be used at warmer temperature ranges. But in that case, check the mowers oil level more often than normal, as it often uses more oil. If you have a more recent Craftsman mower, you can use the recommended oil type. You should use multi-grade thicker oil for older mower engines, as the engine has seen more wear and tear.

Is Synthetic Oil Better For Lawn Mowers

Synthetic oil is better for lawn mowers than conventional oil Synthetic oils offer many advantages for your lawn mower: high lubricity, reduced wear and friction, improved fuel economy, and reduced emissions. Synthetic oil provides excellent protection against wear and corrosion. Protect your lawn mowers engine oil with AMSOIL Synthetic Lawn Mower Oil to help keep it running smoothly for years to come.
