Little Church Of The Flowers

The Little Church of the Flowers was the first church to be built at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The architect was T. Patterson Ross. Ross’s inspiration was an English village church at Stoke Poges in Buckinghamshire, where the poet Thomas Gray had written “Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard,” a famous English poem. Ross wanted to recreate the 600-plus-year-old parish church at Forest Lawn. He began his commission in 1917. The conservatories adjacent to the pews, filled with flowers, was added later on in the construction. The dedication ceremony took place on Mother’s Day, May 12, 1918. At the end of the nave is a Tree of Life Window. The design of the window was created by a long-forgotten monk in an English Abbey it was then translated into a stained glass medium.

A Great American Arboretum

In the 1840s when Buffalo was one of the fastest-growing cities in the country, a Buffalo lawyer, Charles E. Clarke, recognized the need for a cemetery of substantial size to serve the growing city. What he had in mind was more than a burial ground. In 1849, he purchased land in the country two and a half miles from downtown Buffalo, following the vision created by Père-Lachais, the worlds most famous cemetery, established in Paris in 1804. Originally located on a rural estate overlooking the city, Père-Lachais balanced nature and art, allowing civilization to be present without disturbing the grandeur of the romantic setting.

The land Clarke purchased perfectly suited his vision for a picturesque rural cemetery with its rolling hills and charming valleys, spring-fed lakes, and a meandering creek. He designed roadways that curved and intertwined as freely as the landscape itself. His roads were wide, taking up more potential burial space than was truly necessary, but providing interesting vistas and parking for carriages. He thinned out the oak groves on the hilltops to make room for graves, and he planted other trees in the meadows to shade the graves there. In just a years time, he had put a lawn under the forest and the beginning of a forest on the lawn. Clarke had created Forest Lawn, which the Buffalo Commercial Advertiser called one of the most lovely resting places of the dead in the country.

The night creeps on, the mist gathers, a shadow crosses the tombstones, what was that noise? Cemeteries have historically gone hand in hand with good stories. But even without ghost stories, Maplewood’s Forest Lawn Cemetery and Mausoleum is extremely interesting. The Cemetery, located at 1800 Edgerton Street, is among the oldest and most venerated in Maplewood and Minnesota.

The Forest Lawn Cemetery Association was created in 1893 and originally named the site St. Paul Cemetery. Later it was renamed Forest Cemetery before it finally became Forest Lawn Cemetery and Mausoleum.

The community mausoleum was completed in 1919, making it the first mausoleum in the state. Mr. Cecil Bryan noted in an article written in the Daily Oklahoma Newspaper, dated January 27, 1918, that the community mausoleum was the largest in the world. There are more than 1,400 crypts and more than 650 niches in the building. The entire cemetery is approximately 44 acres with an estimated 15,000 individuals buried there.

Plaza Of Mesoamerican Heritage

The Plaza of Mesoamerican Heritage has indigenous/non-Christian sculptures by Meliton Salas Rodriguez, of Guadalajara, Mexico. Salas used hand tools to first quarry, then work, the native Mexican stone into precisely scaled, detailed replicas of artwork and artifacts that are representative of the Aztec, Huastec, Maya, Mixtec, Olmec, Teotihuacan, Toltec, Totonac, and Zapotec civilizations that preceded modern Mexican culture and are in contrast to the Christian and patriotic American themes which were originally reflective of the culture at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills and other Forest Lawn Memorial Parks since their inception by Christian American businessman Hubert L. Eaton. A smooth Olmecan head, an intricate Aztec sun calendar and a sinuous Teotihuacan bas relief are some of the sculptural features of the plaza that are set off by crushed stone walkways and complemented by groupings of Mesoamerican plants.This entire display has been removed and placed in storage.

Pronunciation Of The Name

The English pronunciation of the name of the city has varied. A 1953 article in the of the asserts that the pronunciation was established following the 1850 incorporation of the city and that since the 1880s the pronunciation emerged out of a trend in California to give places Spanish, or Spanish-sounding, names and pronunciations. In 1908, librarian , who argued for the pronunciation with , reported that there were at least 12 pronunciation variants. In the early 1900s, the advocated for pronouncing it Loce AHNG-hayl-ais , approximating Spanish , by printing the under its masthead for several years. This did not find favor.

Since the 1930s, has been most common. In 1934, the decreed that this pronunciation be used. This was also endorsed in 1952 by a “jury” appointed by Mayor to devise an official pronunciation.

Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel

Located in an elegant building in the center of the cemetery midway down the hill, the brick chapel has a distinct spire and an attached concourse that provides coverage from the elements. Inside, the chapel is largely wood, including the pews and ceiling, with a number of skylights. It seats up to 225 people.

The left side of the non-denominational chapel showcases stained-glass artwork of geometric shapes. If you would like religious artifacts, let our staff know. We can provide Catholic crucifixes, Buddhist offering tables and more.

A lounge and patio right outside the chapel is ideal for a reception after a funeral or memorial.

Forest Lawn Memorial Park cemetery was founded and designed by Albert F. Arnold, who wanted to design a memorial park that would be a place of perpetual beauty and which would banish the graveyard taint from such places forever. Wee Kirk O’ The Heather

Wee Kirk o’ the Heather is the second church built at Forest Lawn. The inspiration for the church was based on the village church at Glencairn, Dumfriesshire, Scotland. This village church was erected in 1310 and subsequently destroyed in 1805. Dumfriesshire is rich in historical tradition, and it is most known for being where Sir Walter Scott wrote some of his most famous works, and former home of the famed poet, Robert Burns. The love song “Annie Laurie” is perhaps Scotland’s most popular love ballad. It immortalizes the ill-fated romance of a woman that lived near the original “wee kirk” in the Glencairn.

The song was written by William Douglas of Fingland, a soldier in the Royal Scots Army. Annie Laurie was born at Maxwelton House in 1682, the daughter of Sir Robert Laurie, a baronet. Traditionally, it is believed that Annie’s aristocratic family would not consent to her marrying an older soldier of an opposing clan.

This evocative ballad is portrayed in eight beautiful stained glass windows along the south side of the Wee Kirk at Forest Lawn. Artefacts related to Annie including communion coins, will, and portrait are all housed in the historical room at the Wee Kirk. The Wee Kirk church was dedicated on October 6, 1929. Over five thousand people attended the ceremony, and Frank McWilliams, Scottish tenor, sang “Annie Laurie.”
