Wondering How To Remove A Lawn Mower Blade

Removing a lawn mower blade can be a bit difficult and confusing the first time you do it. The good news is the average lawn mower blade lasts for approximately 200 to 300 hours of mowing.

This means that your average blade can last up to 10 years thats a lot of mowing. But the time will come when it needs to be replaced.

Changing the blade on a riding mower is slightly different and more work than changing that of a push mower. Since a riding lawn mower is much larger, you will need a jack to raise the lawn mower to access the blade.

This is the main difference in changing both lawn mower blades a push mower does not require a jack.

Once you have the blade removed, you also have the choice of either sharpening the old blade or replacing it with a new blade. I tend to sharpen mine, but if youve hit rocks or debris, the blade may be damaged beyond repair.

Some people just dont like the work of grinding metal and would rather shell out $30 for a pre-sharpened blade. Ive gone that route too, and its by far the quickest.

5 DIY Tricks To How To Keep Grass From Sticking To Mower Deck!
  • First, inspect the lawn mower and blade for any damage. To do this, you have to turn the lawn mower on its side to access the blade underneath the mower.
  • Next, tighten the fuel valve, so there are no leaks . You can also take plastic wrap and place it over the cap for extra precaution.
  • Place a piece of wood between the blade and mower housing to prevent the blade from turning when you loosen the bolts. Dont skip this step.
  • Next, disconnect the spark plug. When you inspect the blades and rotate them, there is no chance of the mower starting up. Once you have the fuel valve closed and the spark plug disconnected, you can begin inspecting.
  • Once you have inspected the blades and mower itself, you are ready to remove the blade. This can be done using different tools depending on what you have, but a ratchet spanner or wrench will work fine. Begin to loosen the bolts by turning them with your wrench counterclockwise.
  • Once the bolts are out, you can carefully remove the blade and set it on the ground in the same direction it was taken off. This makes it easier to compare to the new blade.
  • Now you can either sharpen your old blade or install a new one by lining up the holes and retightening the bolts, securing the blade in place. Always make sure the cutting edge is facing upwards, so it shoots the grass up.

    Change Or Check The Oil

Winter Lawn Tips ~ Warm Spell Top 3 Must-Dos

After a season of idleness, your mower needs to have its engine oil refreshed. Consult your owner’s manual to see whether it prescribes changing the oil completely or just topping it off.

Makers of several walk-behind mowers now say that you don’t need to change the oil, just to add to it. If your manual says your model falls into that category, merely check the engine oil level with a dipstick and add oil as necessary. But dont use the mower before then. A mower engine can overheat and fail prematurely from insufficient oil. “Running it for a minute or two is unlikely to cause damage,” says John Galeotafiore, who heads CR’s home improvement testing team. “It could lead to problems, though, if you use it to cut for more than a few minutes.”

With other models, you’ll need to change the engine oil entirely. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions on emptying oil and adding anew. Typically, you can position an auto-style drain pan beside the mower on the side of the dipstick cap, remove the cap, and tip the mower over the pan to drain the oil. Or, put a plastic bag over the gas tank opening and screw on the cap to prevent leaks. Then refill the tank with new oil to the dipstick marking.

A tractor needs an oil change only as specified in your manual.

    Sharpen Mowing Blades Regularly

If you cant remember the last time you sharpened your lawn mower blade, its time to do so. A dull blade is about the worse thing you can do to a lawn, Vaughn said, because where sharp blades cut cleanly, dull blades tear. When you tear the leaf, it opens it up for diseases to attack it. A clean cut helps it regenerate a lot faster and be a healthier plant in the long run.

How often you need to get your blade sharpened will depend largely on how many hours of mowing it does. Mowing a large lawn frequently will cause more wear and tear than occasional use on a small patch of turf.

Your lawn will tell you if you have a dull blade. Take a look at the evenness of the cut and whether the individual blades of grass have been neatly sheared. An uneven, tatty appearance and torn leaves are your cues that its time to sharpen the blade.

You can take the mower into a shop to have the blade professionally sharpened, or you can do it yourself. Lawn mower blade sharpening kits cost as little as $10.

Inspect your blade. If there are chips or gaps, it may be time for a new one. Replacing a blade isnt too tough and can be accomplished with tools most of us have around the house.

After pouring the 2 stroke oil into the fuel in the can, shake vigorously, and pour the 2 stroke mix into your fuel tank. Avoid trying to mix the 2 stroke fuel directly inside your engines fuel tank. It is too hard to shake the 2 stroke mix thoroughly through and unnecessary effort.

Riding lawn mowers or tractors have large engines, change oil at least once every season ideally at the start and/or end of the mowing season.
