Experience Of The Lawn Care Provider

How Much Money Does a Lawn Care Business Make

A service providers training, experience, and expertise can affect your total lawn care costs. If youre hiring a pro who is new to the industry, you can expect to pay much less than hiring a pro with years of experience. Keep in mind that hiring a more experienced professional is likely to provide better results.

Dont Forget To Price Special Services And Materials Differently

Special services like mowing, mulching, and weed control and fertilization application should be priced accordingly, rather than lumped into one cost.

Jason explains that these are actually very different services because they require different types of labor.

Weed control and fertilization, for example, is typically a one-person operation, so your labor is cut downand that one person can actually generate a lot more revenue than one person can mowing, he explains.

But there are expenses in the weed control: the actual fertilizer, weed control product, labor, and drive timeall those things are factors.

The main thing Im concerned with is how big the actual yard is, and the actual amount of turf that Im going to be applying the fertilizer or herbicide to. The bigger the yard, the more of the product Im using. Thats my biggest expense, Jason explains.

So, Im pricing strictly based on the square footage. I need to get an accurate measurement of the square footage of the lawn so that I know how to price it. Then I use a pricing chart that shows square footage from 2,000 square feet all the way up to 30,000 square feet.

I can then look at my pricing chart and give them a price quickly. So as the square footage goes up, the price per square foot actually goes down.

Your Age And Your Health Will Make A Difference

At the grand old age of 57, I am not working as fast as I did at 47, which is slower then I worked at 27. You get the picture. Your age can make a difference. This difference may not be that great if you are reasonably fit and healthy.

Here is a chart of what you could expect taking health and age into consideration.

Age
Unfit $40

This is not set in stone. You will climb this chart as you become used to the work.

My Personal Feelings About Mowing Lawns As A Side Hustle

Personally, I love the opportunity that this side-hustle presents. I know that this is a rather competitive market. I also know that not everyone is going to be able to pursue this one.

The biggest hurdle is probably the vehicle. Not everyone can afford a truck, van, or something else capable of hauling the equipment aroundso that is something that may keep some people from getting into this business.

But at the end of the day, I feel like this is one of the purest and most ambitious side hustle ideas that I have ever looked it. This is the stuff of true entrepreneursa service that everyone needs, and an equal playing field that almost anyone with a little extra money can get into.

Do I think that this side hustle is for everyone? Not necessarily.

Do I think that it is an awesome idea that a lot of people could make use of to make a bit of extra money on the side? Absolutely.

The most expensive part of this business, in all honestly, is probably the vehicle. If you already have a truck, or some kind of vehicle that can pull a small trailer, you are actually golden.

You can buy an awesome push mower for less than $200. Or, better yet, you could just use your own mower until you save up enough to upgrade.

There is so much potential in this side-hustle. I truly believe that this is one of the best opportunities that I have ever written about. I love it!

The Pros Of Lawn Mowing For Money

  • Proximity: Your child should be able to find neighbors or businesses close by that would like lawn service. This will keep him close to home.

Its Not Always About The Money

Senior Landscape Designer Karl Naegler from Rochester, NY has seen it all in his 20+ years of experience.

“If you take care of your employees, listen to them, treat them fair and as equals to one another, give them at least two reviews, have a clear set of goals you would like them to perform, and have an open-door policy on any topic, then you will retain them. Higher pay is just one item.”

The #1 Step To Setting Lawn Employee Wages

Whether you choose to pay an hourly wage, pay by day, or pay based on performance, there are a wide variety of factors to consider when determining pay structure.

Performance pay is becoming more and more popular in the industry and gives the employee more ownership over a job.

In this case, pay is based on each job instead of an hourly rate. A little skin in the game. Though, well cover more on this later.

Now, lets look at a few of the factors that determine how much to pay lawn care employees:

  • Location
  • Different areas of the country pay more or less as a result of factors like cost of living, taxes, etc.
  • When unemployment is low it’s tougher to find great employees, and you’ll likely need to pay more.
  • Competition
  • It’s important to maintain a competitive salary, or you’ll likely end up with the competition’s left over candidates.
  • Also, here are a few factors to consider that relate to employees:

    • Experience
    • Performance and amount of callbacks
    • Attitude, work ethic, morals, and loyalty
    • The employee’s ability to work well as a part of the team

The Cons Of Lawn Mowing For Money

    • Expensive start-up-costs: If your child needs to purchase a lawnmower, it could be an expensive job to start. You could let them use your mower to get started or help them purchase one secondhand.
    • Safety: Make sure that your child understands how to operate a lawn mower with caution. Anytime a child operates machinery, there is the possibility of injury. Create a plan for your child in case he has an emergency.
    • Limited ages: Lawn mowing is appropriate for older children who can operate a lawn mower safely. Younger children may want to consider raking instead.
    • Competition: There could be stiff competition for lawn mowing jobs if they are all interested in the same job. Encourage your child to get creative to land repeat jobs.
    • Weather: Rain can cause a problem for a lawn mowing business so can drought. Help your child create a backup plan for getting lawn mowing jobs done when there is inclement weather.

Why A Homeowner Might Hire A Neighbor Kid Instead Of A Lawn Service

There are a few reasons why your child may find work as a lawnmower even in a competitive field. Here are just a few:

    • Some families like the idea of giving a local kid a leg up and this is an easy way to do so.
    • In some cases, neighbors have known the neighbors’ children since they were tiny, and want to do whatever they can to help out a friend.
    • Some families are more likely to trust a neighbor than they are to trust a “faceless” landscaping business.
    • An individual can adjust prices to undercut the rates charged by large landscaping firms.

How Much Should I Pay A Teenager To Mow My Lawn

Regardless of age, it can be difficult to figure out how much you should pay a teenager to mow your lawn. There are many benefits to hiring a teenager, including the fact that they will get valuable experience and make some extra money. Even if you dont think youll need to hire a teenager for your lawn, its worth the effort to find out the appropriate amount.

Using the money youd spend on gas and a can of soda will help you get a fair price for their services. However, if the teen doesnt have a car or owns their own equipment, they can charge a low fee for their services. Remember to be generous with the amount you pay, though. A couple dollars is worth a lot more to them than to you.

The cost of hiring a teenager to mow your lawn will depend on how much you need the service and how big your yard is. You can start with a minimum of $10 for a small lawn, but you should be more generous if you need a large lawn mowed frequently. In addition, you can hire a jobbing teenager to do the job for a lower price.

While paying a teenager to mow your lawn is not as hard as it might seem, its important to remember that youre not only paying for the actual labor, but youre also providing the teenager with the tools, gas, and food. If youre paying a teenager for lawn care, make sure you pay enough for the service to cover their expenses. In the case of injuries, you cant waive liability, but you can purchase work comp insurance if the job involves any risks.

How to Price A Lawn Mowing Job in Lawn Care

We checked 2021 prices at HomeAdvisor. The US average cost to mow a lawn, per visit, ranged from $30 up to $80.

Fees increase with increased services, like edging , leaf-blowing, mulching fall leaves or clearing winter debris. Theres also a price variation depending on which part of the country you live in. Surprisingly, its cheaper where the grass grows best, in the South.

If you have a large lawn, you could pay by the acre. HomeAdvisor says that you should expect to pay around $175 per acre for mowing.

Home Advisor say the hourly rates averaged between $25 and $60 but this hourly rate is probably per lawn crew person. According to a poll of over 10,000 lawn care professionals, GreenPal reported that 78% of lawn care companies charged $60 per hour on average, per man. Heres the rule of thumb GreenPal recommends $1 per mowing minute per person.

If you live in an urban area, where the mowing service must travel to get to your lawn, you may pay more. Ask for an estimate for your lawn.

Lawn care professionals all have their own metrics. Chances are, theyll estimate your lawn size from Google Earth while talking to you. Theyll factor in whether they have to travel far to get to your location.

Your best bet is to contract with a company for a flat rate, not an hourly one.
