What questions to ask local lawn mower repair services? When hiring a lawn mower mechanic, ask them the following questions: How long have you been in business? What mower brands do you repair? Maintain Your Mower For Better Operation

You can enhance your lawn mowers longevity and keep it in better working order by giving it a tune-up each growing season. Make sure to clean it thoroughly after each use, too. Caked dirt, debris, and grass clippings can affect various parts of your mower. By removing these items with each use, you can prevent buildup and ward off some of the common issues outlined here.

Another way to ensure your lawn mower is operating properly is to keep the following tips in mind:

  • Change the mowers oil as recommended in your owners manual
  • Be sure that you use appropriate replacement parts for your mower
  • Use the right fuel for your mower
  • Use fuel stabilizer to keep the gas in the mower from going bad
  • Clean and replace the mowers air filter periodically
  • Sharpen your mowers blades after roughly 25 hours of use
  • Properly winterize your lawn mowers motor and store the mower properly for the cold season

If you have any difficulties troubleshooting your lawn mowers problems or cant make the repairs yourself, you can take your mower to a service provider. Many fixes are inexpensive. This will help you get more value from your mower.

Store Your Lawn Mower Properly

Taking good care of your lawn mower doesnt stop when the mowing season stops. It is important to care for your lawn mower all year round, especially when it is going to sit for a long period of time, or when you first pull it out after it has been sitting.

When storing your lawn mower for long periods of time, be sure to drain the gasoline from the mower. Old gasoline in your lawn mower could cause it to not start when peak mowing season comes around.

Its more expensive, but you can also buy gas that is ethanol-free. This type of gasoline you can leave in your machine year-round and you dont have to worry about it going bad. For me, its worth the extra money .

If you forget to drain the gas our of your lawn mower, here are some tips for getting your mower started again when peak season comes around:

You can start your business as a solo endeavor where you do all the work yourself, or you can hire part-time, full-time or on-demand labor.

What Causes A Riding Lawn Mower To Lose Power

Dirty Blades and Air Passages Dirt, debris and corrosion can cause your mower to lose power as it goes uphill. When there is mud, grass or other buildup coating the blades, they slow down and the motor works harder to turn them. A dirty air filter can also lead to problems with power when mowing uphill.

    Truck Or Vehicular Costs

When you first start your lawn service company, you will need a vehicle to drive around from client to client. Unless youre intending to start with clients within walking distance, youll likely require a car, van, or truck. The best vehicle for a lawn service company is a pickup truck.

A truck allows you to tow a trailer . It also can have a pile of tools in the bed of the truck for easy access during your workday.

You can pick up a used truck or buy a new one, and depending on which decision you make here, the associated costs will change dramatically.

However, although a newer vehicle may cost more initially, statistically speaking, a new truck will cost less in maintenance and repairs than an older vehicle would. It is assuming for an initial period as all cars and trucks will eventually break down and require replacement.

With over half a million of each the Ford F-Series, Ram Pickup, and the Chevrolet Silverado sold in the U.S. alone in 2019 , theres no question as to the trucks popularity. Its their robust and versatile nature that makes them so accessible, and not just for lawn service trucks either.

Depending on options, and whether you buy new or used, a truck can cost anywhere from $10,000 to $75,000 plus.

How Much To Charge For Lawn Fertilization

The U.S. national average cost for lawn weed control and fertilization is $91. To choose how much you should charge for a fertilizer application, calculate the cost of the lawn fertilizer youll use for the job based on the square footage of the lawn.

A typical 40 to 45-pound pack of lawn fertilizer costs $40, which covers around 15,000 square feet of grass. That would put your fertilizer costs at $23 for an average 8,500 square-foot lawn.

For large-scale jobs, your fertilizer supply costs might be higher than your labor costs, unlike for your other lawn maintenance services like mowing and grass trimming.

Once you add up your total fertilizer costs and labor costs, add markup to your cost estimate so you can cover your supply expenses and turn a profit on your lawn service job.

How dangerous can mowing the lawn really be?

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, 80,000 people are taken to the emergency room every year due to lawn related injuries.

Lawn equipmentincluding mowers, weed eaters, hedge clippers, and mulchersare some of the most dangerous items in the household. Also, flammable gas, harmful fumes, and sharp blades moving at over 200 mph, all bring added dangers to this chore.

Additionally, being in the sun without protection can have long lasting negative impact on the skin, including cancer and skin disease.

Why not leave this task to better trained pros?

    Change The Spark Plug Annually

Replace lawn mower spark plugs once a year, such as at the beginning of mowing season.

    • Disconnect the spark plug wire and then remove the existing spark plug with a wrench or pliers.
    • To ensure you purchase the right replacement plug, write down the code on your existing plug, consult your mowers owners manual or just take the old plug with you when you go to purchase a new one.
    • Screw in the new plug and reconnect the spark plug wire.

    Sharpen Your Lawn Mower Blades

Lets face it other than that guy or gal across the street nobody has a perfect lawn .

Because nobodys yards are perfect and most are filled with rocks, roots, sticks, and other hard, blunt objects, your mowers blades can take a beating. They endure a lot of stress, especially during peak mowing season.

It is important to keep your mowers blades sharp.

Dull lawn mower blades rip and tear the grass instead of cutting it, causing damage to your mower and to your lawn. Learning to sharpen your lawn mower blades will make a huge difference in your lawns performance.

Plus its super satisfying to learn and do. It was one of my favorite steps when first learning how to service a lawn mower.

If you are not handy, I recommend hiring a professional to help sharpen your lawn mower blades.

Some people use a metal file to sharpen their lawn mowers blades and others use an angle grinder. Doing this improperly can be dangerous. You could damage your mower, so gauge for yourself whether or not this is for you.

I found it pretty easy to master and I find it relaxing and fun. But I also have a blog about lawn care, so I may not be speaking for the masses.
