  • For more numerous populations, install a properly baited wasp trap downwind of your outdoor living area.

How To Kill Wasps

Generally, spring is the most ideal time for killing wasps, before the queen has established her colony. By late summer and fall, their nests decline as they become more interested in collecting pollen or foraging for sugary sweets. If the nest is large or youre dealing with the more aggressive types, like yellow jackets and hornets, you may want to call in reinforcements to handle the job. Otherwise, you can grab the can of wasp and hornet spray and following label instructions, spray the insecticide into the nest entrance or saturate the paper wasp nest during evening hours when the wasps are less active.

In addition to regular wasp spray, some people also use WD-40. However, when killing wasps in a plant , this isnt always practical. Thats when using a home remedy to remove a wasp nest is necessary. For aerial nests, cover with a trash bag and seal it shut. Cut the nest from the tree and leave it in the sun the next day or freeze it to kill the wasps inside.

For those in the ground, pour a soapy solution down the entrance and then seal it off with dirt or a large boulder. Keep in mind these usually have two entrances, so locating the back entrance is a good idea before you start. While not really earth-friendly, pouring paint into the nest may also be successful in eliminating these pests.

Yellow Jackets And Hornets

If that description doesnt fit the threatening insects youve got buzzing around your ears, they may be different types of wasps also common in the U.S.: Yellow jackets and hornets.

And the Oklahoma State Extension explains that while the nest is the dead giveaway, you can also tell which youve got based on size and appearance.

Yellow jackets are smaller, and as the name suggests, colored yellow with black stripes. The common cicada killer hornet is colored similar to the yellow jacket, but is much larger.

Yellow jackets, hornets and paper wasps all fall under the category of social wasps, meaning they nest in groups.

Seeing one wasp whiz by your head is enough to make you nervous.

Finding a big nest in the corner of your front porch, busy with angrily buzzing, stinging insects going in and out, well thats enough to be downright scared.

Wasps are pests for homeowners clear across the country. These predatory insects swarm and if disturbed pack quite a sting. Getting rid of wasps is not an easy chore.

They are very defensive, says Jennifer Pelham, director of the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences Extension in Martin County. They will come after you if you get near their nest or even if youre near where they are, theyll readily sting you.

As a protection against predators, wasps and other insects have developed stingers that contain venom. The venom from a wasp sting can contain a cocktail of poisons, and can vary by the type of wasp.

To some highly sensitive people, a sting from an angry wasp can pose a mortal threat. Allergic reactions to insect stings are common, and result in as many as 100 American deaths every year, according to the Texas A& M University Extension.

Even an ordinary, non-allergic reaction to wasp stings is no fun, either. It swells up for the first two days after a sting, and swelling doesnt go away for five to 10 days.

  • Keep your garden plants strong with good, natural fertilizing methods, and employ natural insect repellents to keep any wasp infestation under control. If you have lots of insect pests in your veggie and flower garden, they will attract predator wasps.

  • Dont wear brightly colored clothes when gardening or relaxing in your yard. Bright colors mean food to many nectar-eating critters from hummingbirds to bees to butterflies and some wasps.
  • Avoid creating attractive places for wasps to build nests. Loose boards, cracks, gaps, and other symptoms of deferred maintenance are attractive to wasps. Keep your home and outbuildings in a good state of repair to avoid attracting wasps.
  • Keep an eye out for burrows in your yard and garden. Rodents and spiders can dig holes that some types of swarming wasps will take over. When you see an abandoned animal burrow, fill it in and place a bowl or a rock over it to discourage wasps from entering.
